Right so I have Elky's page on my FB and I saw there was an interview with http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft/Elky about him playing SC2 in a tournament "seriously". There was mention of this here but no translation so here goes:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xfa567_bertrand-elky-grospellier-a-l-eosl_videogames
the article above the video just retraces his SC career with Guillaume "Grrr…" Patry then his switch to poker, holding the Guinness World Record for most Single Table Sit & Goes played in one hour (62) and world first Supernova/Supernova Elite on PStars which netted him a place in the french PStars team. The interview however only focuses on SC2.
Hey Elky! A lot of old players are coming back for SC2. Did you feel like doing it too?
Obviously SC2 is different because SC1 has been out for what, 12 years, and I played a lot of games in between with friends but SC2 is the first game where old progamers come back to play and of course I have a lot of korean friends that are starting, like one of my best korean friends created oGs Spunky? Yeah Spunky...and his team is dominating quite hard so next time I meet him I think I'll spend a few days with him so I can practice because they have amazing players. And of course it's a lot of fun to play with guys you know well and respect a lot... It's quite different from playing with strangers
You coming back to SC2 fulltime?
Well the problem is with poker and PokerStars taking a lot of my time, my biggest issue is since I'm very competitive I don't want to come back just for fun, I want to be able to practice to have a chance to win it all, I don't want to play tournaments just to get destroyed so it's quite difficult. I love playing poker and I love SC2 so I try to have time for both but if there are some tournaments that don't take a lot of time, i.e. online tournaments I might be able to play more. I definitely don't want to be around just for show haha.
What's your current level?
I played around 400 games quickmatch 1v1, mainly random (TL Note: think he's 1718 diamond?). The biggest problem is since I play random I have to learn a lot of matchups and well, there's a new patch out haha. I think I'm doing well with Terran, not as much with Protoss & Zerg, they really aren't simple matchups. I saw they were helping Zerg but I still don't know if I'll stick to one race or keep playing random I'll have to think about it.
What made you want to play in eOSL?
I've played quite a lot of SC2 and I wanted to face the best French players to see where I'm standing since I haven't really played against them. It makes me happy to go back to competitive gaming, it's pretty motivating.
What kind of results are you expecting?
To be honest I have no idea how good they are so we'll see, I love surprises so we'll see how that goes, I'm pretty confident and I have the amazing opportunity to have a lot of friends that happen to be good SC2 players like Nazgul the TL team manager and Spunky the oGs manager so I think I'll be able to practice against them, it might be very helpful.
edit: there's probably a ton of mistakes, 3am translating is pretty lol edit2: french source

Elky playing SC2. Why? He earns a lot more playing poker. Maybe he is doing it for interest and not for money.

ELKY !!!!!!!!!!! Come on man YOU CAN do it! Just stop playing boring poker plzz
|
Sounds like hes doing it purely out of sport/competitive spirit/interest for the game. I don't know how competitive he can be while still being a full-time (???) poker player. Then again, near the end of his career ElkY wasn't really practicing starcraft, but poker in his practice time.

Elky is just disorganised person. Actually his natural disorder allows all his other great qualities to shine even more !

Kiwikaki was a near fulltime poker player throughout most of the Beta until launch. It's possible

That's nice if he comes back, however i think he will be destroyed by Adel or SarenS. I will cheer for him though :3
|
All I can say is....it's about time....
I hope more old schoolers come back....a true veteran's tournament would be sweet
|
French pride is back
omg omg !
|
Hahaha I'm excited about this. I always wanted to see the poker guys like Rekrul and Elky come back and show us some of their SC2 skills, and it seems I may very well get my way given Rekrul's recent posts and now this. Someone better make the VOD's/stream available when this tournament hits.
|
Was about to post about this as I was just so happy to hear about and wanted to share my happiness with you guys. I am actually loving the fact he is obviously not coming for money but insist on the fact that he is not here for the show, but to do his best.
|
Elky? He still lives? Yay! :D
|
Elky is sick, he can succeed in whatever he wants to do because he's such a hardworker.
|
Elky is like my all-time hero, if he comes back then it would be amazing~

His new face makes me think of the clubbing friend of Pegg in Spaced >.<

Holy shit.
Would be awesome if he comes back
|
well, Rekrul should be the manager of a new team featuring elky and giyom
now THAT would be SICK

OMG O_______o;;;;;;;;;;
NaDa, then Boxer then Elky ? This is a conspiracy right ? You bastards want me to spend my whole time in front of Teamliquid and streams ? You're happy ruining my social and professional life ?
|
Elky and Giyom playing is very cool, 2 great players to look up too full of talent.
|
Great great news!! Wish him best of luck and hope to see him play on screen soon :p In the picture he looks really old now... I guess he is ~30 now?!
|
The more I think about this, the more I'm thinking that Poker Stars has as much to do with ElkY coming back as ElkY did. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure ElkY enjoys playing SC2, and by no means had his hand forced, but this is seriously a great marketing tool for Poker Stars.
It's evident that a lot of people have already said "omg he made 6 million dollars after being a starcraft pro? I need to get into poker".
If he makes the GSL, or any big tournament, I'm willing to wager that PokerStars would pay him more to wear the Pokerstars logos then the winner of the tournament will make.

Random comment:
Thank you for linking the french source. I have started to learn french again and I wouldn't have had the idea to search for a french esport site. But reading up on stuff I am interested in (and is not scientific difficulty) and trying to translate it will probably help me a ton.
Now I'm happy
|
I don't think he has what it takes.
|
btw he's in pool D, facing SarenS, BenSen & Stephano (I have no idea how good BenSen & Stephano are since well, the only french players I've seen play are Adel and SarenS).
He's playing vs Stephano first.
Tourney's double elimination so he might have a chance
edit: just realized, lolfrance wtf, they say "poule" instead of pool. while phonetically it's approximately the same, a "poule" is a hen.

BenSen is "quite ok" but "only" 12th in the French ESL Pro series. Stephano I think has made some good results in french Lan Events and recently joined Millenium team (Adel's team, and previous HuK's team). Not really knowing ElkY actually SC2 level I would say that he will have to fight hard for the 2nd place.

More like "if Elky wants", there's a sphere of no-questions-asked old players that is being tapped into with the advent of SC2.

Yeah Kiwikaki did it then it's possible ! come on man you can't compare kiwi's nearly fulltime internet poker playing with Elky's professional poker star career ...
Fulltime poker player and professionnal poker player are two way different things, while a fulltime poker player spends his time playing many tables on internet to make a living a professionnal poker player travels the world to play live events, is sponsored by companies and do tv shows and promotionnal stuff. He have contracts to fullfil and a many obligations to his sponsors. Between a 6 to 8 hours a day joblike way of playing poker on the Internet and the life of a pokerStar, there is a world of difference.
Elky play's on the biggest poker tournaments, poker TV shows, winning EPT/WPT tournaments, top 100 in WSOP main event and getting to WSOP finals and much more with 6 million dollars winnings on live events only, which means a lot more in online + sponsoring. Professional poker is a full time job, you can't just do professional poker and professional gaming, you need to choose, and i think that the eOSL will be just a crushing defeat to Elky since he won't be able to compete at the same level as Sarens or Adelscott.
|
elky is god damn hilarious, quits BW to become a Poker pro. i'll never forget his shades, what a queer/baller at the same time. i remember reading a lot of funny stuff about him back when i played wc3... hope he does well, however given how dedicated sc2 players are there's no way he can be a poker and sc2 pro at once... and poker is where the money is at, so =/

Elky was dominating War3 during its early phases while also playing poker and BW. Elky is a baller. I'm not expecting him to try SC2 very seriously, but if he gave it his all, he'd own.
|
Fucking baller! He knows how to live life.
|
mother#@$%@#$elky!!!! <3 <3 <3
|
I'm extremely confident that Elky can dominate SC2. he has connects for practice partners, a reputation for ridiculous grinding, as well as a professional competitive personality.
|
haha looking at elky's recorded games in the tlpd, I see like 10+ players from GSL1 and GSL2, who haven't played televised starcraft 1 in years
|
Elky in SC2 is sick no doubt. Cool seeing old school players playing SC2.

As much as I would love to see it, even more so because of my nationality, it isn't possible right now. I'm almost positive that he hasn't been practicing with our top french players, and we even have doubts on how far SarenS would go, should he go to the GSL, eventho he is our best player.
Best thing would be elky being able to train against koreans from oGs or top FR's like MoMaN, SarenS, Adel, KenZy or AureS to cite a few, that would definitely put him back in a good dynamic.
Mad respect tho, it takes balls coming back knowing that you are the underdog now and that everyone will be after you because of your past fame and that the current good players have way more experience at the moment than you. I can only wish him good luck, it would be sick to see him come back to kick some ass, he's a passionate guy, if he really wants to get back in the scene, he will put the effort and the time to go 10hours a day again, leaving poker aside for a bit. The pros know this well with poker, its never a question of age, for starcraft it kinda is, it's now or never, he can always go back to playing poker in a couple years if he wants to go back to SC2.
|
elky must be a pretty smart guy... progamer and professional poker player 0.0 there's quite a bit of thinking in poker contrary to popular belief
