But this way they get more creative freedom.

I don't get it, how could SotG be independent if the main host / organiser is still working for MLG.
Whether the show itself is actually being hosted on MLG or not, it really makes very little difference.
I can't imagine the conversation going any different than:
Sundance: "Hey JP, we're getting rid of almost all our discussion shows due to budget constraints, we just can't waste the bandwidth on it due to being unable to figure out how to monetize it. We can't make it look like we dropped SotG though because there will probably be community outrage"
JP: "Oh, that's fine then... Let's just say I came up with the idea and we'll bundle it with all this "community based independent journalist" crap that's been going on so MLG doesn't look bad."
Sure I could be wrong, but we'll never know considering MLG pays JP's bills; which is kind of the point. We'll always get the MLG spin in regards to this, regardless of whether they sponsor the show or not.
Edit: Good point by Geoff below though... I wonder if that's why we haven't heard much extended series bashing lately.

MLG does not sponsor SOTG. JP being employed by them is not a "sponsorship."
This 100% does mean we are now free (completely) to discuss anything MLG related without having to worry.. JP obviously won't be as candid but that is the same as me not being 100% candid about EG business related stuff or Tyler not being harsh onTL etc. We all have our ties but now we have fewer... it's a move in the right direction.

JP still works for MLG, and did hint about "NYC office visit" (Which is where MLG is located) for the first episode of the season. SoTG was always free under MLG wtf?
The only thing that changed was when the show airs and losing the MLG sponsorship.

We are at this time doing it 100% on our own which is fine and good but it'd be nice if we could alleviate the costs from JP, get ourselves higher production value and maybe make some money at the same time. I just read JP's announcement, and I can't wait for the 19th! My two cents:
First, I'm truly up for paying for additional content. However, I see chat access and icons as gimmicks not content. I have fingers crossed that the "more stuff" to be revealed on the 19th is more in the vein of content.
Second, best of luck finding sponsors. It's a great show and I really hope you guys can drum up the financial support to sustain and grow the show. As a fan, I'm more than happy to support sponsors of SotG.

For me personally it's starts at 1 am. Sure that's a better time than 4 or 5am. But usually the show last about 2 so that would be from 1 am to 3 am. For me that not really a god time to watch a show on a regular basis. But i hope that the move pays out for them. And that the mp3 is up in the morning.
