MLG has released a news post discussing the expansion of the MLG Raleigh SC2 player pool as well as top player invites:
In the short time since we announced that StarCraft 2 would be added to the Pro Circuit, MLG has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. We at MLG are incredibly excited to be able to add StarCraft 2 to the Pro Circuit, and we want the inaugural Event in Raleigh to be the best possible tournament for all those involved. The 32 available passes sold out within seconds; these passes were offered to make sure that this first tournament would be accessible to newcomers and as-yet unknown talent: the players that are the heart of the MLG community, and may well be the stars of tomorrow. In the interest of producing the highest possible level of competition for everyone, we have decided to issue 32 additional invitations to the world’s best players, bringing the total number of competitors at Raleigh to 64.
StarCraft is a well-established franchise, but is a new Event on the Pro Circuit. While there are a number of players who are known as top players, MLG currently has no previous tournaments to rely on to form a ranking system. However, no StarCraft 2 tournament would be the same without them. The best way to ensure that everyone gets a fair shot, but that the current talent is not left out, is to hold an open, randomly-seeded, tournament where newcomers and veteran players alike can compete on a level playing field.
Please note that these reputation-based invitations will only be used at MLG Raleigh. All future StarCraft 2 MLG Events will use the standard MLG Pro Circuit points system. The Top 16 players to come out of Raleigh will be issued invitations to the next Event, in D.C., and the remaining passes for that Event will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.
We're tremendously excited to see a number of new players make names for themselves in Raleigh, as well as feature some of the biggest names in the StarCraft community. In the coming weeks, we'll be releasing a finalized player roster for the Event. Stay tuned! Source: http://www.mlgpro.com/content/page/310553/Top-StarCraft-2-Players-to-be-Invited-to-MLG-Raleigh
With that said, I have already taken a handful of invites out for notable players. I am extending this out to members of the community who send me a PM here on TeamLiquid.
If the PM does not fit the below format then I will not respond to it. Also, we will only be looking to invite top eight players in the Diamond 1v1 League (and I have ways to check this). This is a first come, first serve basis.
Subject: MLG SC2 Raleigh Invitee Real Name: In-game BNet 2.0 Name: Diamond Ladder Position: Sponsor: (N/A if none) Age: Email: Location:
Thanks for everyone's interest in MLG and look for more announcements in the coming weeks leading up to the event!

I hope I get to see some fun games of Idra stomping on Silver level players!

top 8 in your division or the top 8 players on the ladder? Because top 8 division means shit

"Diamond ladder position"
What about the poor souls stuck in platinum like Cauthonluck? =P
|
I should elaborate, you want to make a cut off based on ladder points if you're looking at a simple determinant for eligibility. There are divisions where being top 8 means you have 500 points and divisions where having 700 points puts you at #20. It would be unfortunate for a better play to be passed up cause he's in a more difficult division
|
Now people can stop bitching about it, and finally realize that MLG is run by people who actually listen to the community, good or bad.
As to everyone that bought the original 32-pass and are upset about this change:
1) They announced that this would happen BEFORE passes went on sale, had the passes sold out quick enough. 2) It's more respectable to get a top finish when their are pros in the brackets, than get a top finish against people who are very unknown and probably much less skilled than those who are being invited. 3) If you entered solely because you thought the competition would be lacking, and you would get easy-money...you honestly should not be anywhere near any competitive leagues, go to locals.
|
|
Rank in diamond is a really poor way to do it. Make a minimum rating. There are some people with 600 points in 25th place and some in first with 400.
|
Yes, I know all about the ELO and sc2ranks -- I'm not going to invite just anyone. Also, I've already reached out to the players who should be reached out to so don't need to worry about it. This is for those lesser-known players that I haven't reached out to in the community because it's hard to find a way to contact them.
Example: Trump. ANSWER YOUR PM JESUS CHRIST STOP STREAMING!1IOH1IOEDH1!! RAGE.

and I have ways to check this
haha like loggin on to bnet and checking the profile? mad skills :D

I'll admit that the private invite/ladder position system works slightly better than my suggestion of "have them pay Shrew's rent".
The wait for this tournament is rough, feels like waiting for Christmas as a kid. Going to be an insanely awesome event.

Good move by MLG as this is what the community wanted, but I can see how it's kind of gay for the first 32 guys who bought a pass and were expecting to play the other 31 guys, not the additional top 32 invited players in the world. Obviously this makes for a better tournament, and you need to beat the best to be the best, etc, but I think everyone can see the point. Just playing the devil's advocate here.
This will be clear in the future though. Qualifiers might be a better move so there's not this "who bought passes the fastest" component which is a bit silly. Qualifiers would allow unknowns to get in but still making sure there would be a high level of competition. I'm sure MLG knows what they're doing from other games so maybe they've already considered this though.
Really excited for the event, it would be quite boring without the top players ^^
Edit: I read it again and am a bit confused on the wording. Clearly the 32 spots already sold are fixed for this event. But will the 'first come first served' spots have the diamond requirement in the future? That solution would be ok instead of qualifiers too. Or is the diamond requirement just for the "invite" spots?

I think doing it based off ladder ranks is a HORRIBLE idea. Players like Morrow and Machine don't ladder competitively. It's like seeding college golf players based on put put scores.

Hey everyone, as MLG Adam said, we were planning on expanding the bracket. To make sure that top tier players are going to get in, I've been working closely with JP on the invites (translation: listening to what he recommends).
As i said earlier, this was the announcement I promised. We'll be releasing the full player list once the attendees are locked in. I'm expecting it to be a solid turnout.

If it's anything like Halo 3, Call of Duty, RSV, and the myriad other games MLG's had on the Circuit, they'll stream pretty much 100% of it, and release the replays as well. For Halo etc. they broadcast the entire tournament day's gameplay, whether or not it's being commentated (i.e. Ro256). Those of you used to watching marathon streams from major SC tournaments will be right at home, I imagine.

@overt:
It will likely be streamed. I've been following MLG for quite a while and they do a pretty nice job with live coverage.

Sounds good, thanks for the reply. Was thinking about attending this since it isn't too far from me but I think I'd much rather not ask off work and stream from the comfort of my home.

Are who you want to be
Day9 is going to be in germany casting the IEM tournament so he's out and HD/Husky have no affiliation with MLG as far as I know so it will probably be JP and/or other MLG casters.

Lol i guess it kinda doesn't make sense. I was more talking about the whole tournament or if you are just casting the semi finals and the finals. Do we get to see "main stage" all the time just like halo? I know there are only certain times where there are casters and times where the stream is just played... that is more what i am talking about lol

So sad that I'm at Leeds Festival that weekend. I usually have a great time watching the Halo (Go Carbon!) and WoW (Go Dignitas!), and with SC as well, I would be fit to burst. Thanks for pushing this JP, you were a big part of making American WoW a scene (RIP Arenacast) and now you're doing the same for SC

Wow, this is really cool. I'd like to see this. Is this going to be in the new Marriot downtown? This is what the MLG site makes it seem like.
|
So any well known players going now?
|
With only $7k in prizes I just don't see a big name attending this tournament. Especially, since gomtv has that 85k top prize going on at the same time -_- MLG really needs to up the ante on prize money or the big names will never play here.
Another scenario, say a good player does rise through playing mlg. He will just be lost when he realizes he can make 10x as much in tournaments across the sea.
|

The ESL online qualifier is that weekend as well, with nearly double the prize pool in the final tournament.
|
I think the prize money is fine. If you live in the US the travel is cheaper and you don't risk as much of a loss if you don't win it. MLG might up the prize money as the game shows more and more support from the fans. MLG always has a great show except for the dr. pepper house segment during breaks.
Go go MLG bring the North American e-sports out of the halo's and wow arena! I wouldn't mind seeing Igoaf cast games as well. I last heard he got into SC2.

Jeez. There's always something to complain about, it seems. TL.net three days ago: None of the big names will be attending this tournament, because the passes will sell out to a bunch of bronze, nay, practice league-caliber players! Make it an invitational! MLG: Okay, we'll be awesome and expand the bracket and invite the top players so they don't have to worry about the passes selling out. TL.net now: Well... none of the big names will be attending this tournament! MLG will never get off the ground this way, they need a prize pool of over $85k!
Did any of you see the gomtv schedule? It looks like a fantastic tournament. Hell, I'll watch it for sure, and 85k is absolutely awesome. However, for players to be in the running for that 85 grand, they have to be in Korea from September 4th through October 2nd. Uhhhh. Speaking of 'cost of attendance,' that is a significant investment in time and money. If you want to determine things purely by a "maximum money per time invested" basis, then gomtv still beats out MLG, but the difference isn't nearly as stark as the immediate impression of "85k vs. 5k." At (85k/29 days)= $2.93k a day for gomtv, and MLG is (5k/2days*)=2.5k a day, with a much lower cost of attendance. * = I'm assuming MLG will have two days' worth of SC, because I believe that's how WoW and other non-Halo games tend to be
Sure, most/all Koreans will not play in MLG--they already live there. But I would suspect that we'll see many more big names of international players than the people complaining seem to think, especially with players that have other obligations leading them to not be able to dedicate a whole month of their time to playing a computer game in a different country. Most likely people will continue to be either cynical or ignorant and keep bringing this issue up, but to them all I can say is--why don't we just wait and see first? Both MLG and gomtv will continue to have tournaments. If gomtv truly steals every single top name in the SC2 scene, then it would be conducive to have discussions about how to get bigger names to go to MLG, and your complaints would be validated. However, I think you'll see that MLG will be an awesome, entertaining tournament. Have some faith.
EDIT: Source for gomtv schedule: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=141496

Seriously, the first 32 invites will most likely be bronze/silver league caliber players. Granted, I understand the need for an open invite tournament, but still... any Diamond league player that got in will have no problem dominating. I'd apply to go, but I need to work on getting into the Top 8 of my league. Right now, I'm sitting at #30 because I play 1v1 about the same amount as 2v2/3v3/4v4. I'm Diamond 1v1, Plat 2v2/3v3, and Diamond 4v4. All random teams. I haven't found good teammates to work with on a solid consistent team.
I'll see if I can get into Top 8 over the next few days then apply. If not, man.. sucks to be beat out by a first come first serve basis. I have friends in NC, so I could definitely hit up the tournament and crash at their places.

I'm top 8 in my diamond league and so is a friend of mine and we both got in as the original 32. Also i'm sure Joseki is top 8 in his division.
Gotta love people who come to TL and talk about random crap without supporting their claims.

I don't know why everyone assumes the first 32 people who bought MLG slots are low level players. I know bronze players, I know silver players, if you even say 'MLG' to them they're going to reply "wat? I don't watch baseball dude". My friend bought the game the day it came out and he's silver 1v1 as protoss and can't even grasp the concept of what a build order is. He's not aware Phoenix is a unit, he's never made a mothership, he builds probes until his gateways are up then never makes a probe again. I watched one of his replays to give him tips a couple days ago and he doesn't chronoboost... ever, not one time in an entire game.
I highly doubt there were any players below platinum mashing F5 to get into MLG. If you believe otherwise you are severely overestimating the awareness of your average SC2 player about competitive gaming.

Where is your evidence for this? I'm top 8 in my diamond league and so is a friend of mine and we both got in as the original 32. Also i'm sure Joseki is top 8 in his division. Gotta love people who come to TL and talk about random crap without supporting their claims.
Again, first come first serve means anybody. Enjoy crushing people who still don't know to play. Had I known about this earlier, I could just as well have signed up, seeing as how it's anybody really.

Another scenario, say a good player does rise through playing mlg. He will just be lost when he realizes he can make 10x as much in tournaments across the sea.
Yeah, the prize money isn't spectacular enough to really attract european or asian players over. I won't say international, cause well, Canadian players could attend.

It needs to grow. Btw, European Halo teams have never got in the Top 8 but are still attending. Sponsors are great to have

Is a stream confirmed?

They will be streaming the event. They stream each game on their circuit, excluding the EA games I believe. Plus, since they are Blizzards Offical NA partner, theirs no reason they won't be able to stream.

Come on people, this is basically the chance for any Diamond players to attend MLG's first live StarCraft 2 event, not to mention a shot at the $7,000 prize pool. I'd expect the number of PMs to cause JP's inbox to explode, but I see he still needs more folks. Get on this before it's too late.

Yeah haven't heard much from Nony since like HDH. Would really like to see him in this or just playing in general.

If it makes you feel any better, everyone who gets eliminated early will share last place ^^

Not sure, really - you'd have to ask him.

We still have a couple of invite spots we're holding open for the TL community. If anyone's interested, please see OP and PM itmeJP.

I'm so mad I missed the opportunity to buy a ticket and get my name out there. I agree the ladder seeding is a bad idea, but hey, who am I to judge? I wanted one of those passes SO bad.

Done. I would love to be a part of the competition and put up a good show!
EDIT: I actually saw that he's holding back passes for top 8 diamond. Unfortunate seeing how I'm a mustang in the leagues and I'm shooting up from plat to diamond at the moment. I'm stuck in the same league as CauthonLuck haha! Soon enough I suppose.
Hopefully things work out though.

Do we know the streaming/VOD arrangements for this? I likely won't be able to watch on Friday, and I'm curious about the overall streaming and the hours.

Guys If you purchased one of the original 32 passes PLEASE check your email and respond! Thank you

so, are all 64 sold out/filled now ?

It is so sweet to see SC2 gaining momentum.

What about the poor souls stuck in platinum like Cauthonluck? =P
If he wants to get in he should start laddering again instead of playing custom games ;p

Yep! Sadly for some of us that couldn't get it, but VERY good for those who did.
