for aus, connecting to usa is better It depends where the server actually is. They might put it in Australia. not likely, bandwidth costs in aus are too expensive. I'd guess singapore.

Is it laggy for you right now in Beta?
I can tell you that it's not.

not likely since the ping from singapore to australia is over 220...but from australia to the US its less than 180..

But then - most if not all players would want to connect to the US servers; and then they would be filled with games with terrible pings;; dimming down the experience not only for Americans but for everyone else. think about WC3 now; most people play on BA now am i right? - this may be due to various issues;; perhaps people being too cheap to buy WC3 (cheapskates) . Or there is a community of Aussies on there. I think to a degree you would agree with me that; WC3 finding a game with good latency was a bit of a challenge but rewarding when you did find one. That as it may be; is only my experience of WC3 servers; which may be totally different to yours; but in respect ; i do see the advantage of server change; but also server segregation. But overall; i don't think it will prevent you from buying SC2 and having a good experience.

They will have better ping than AUS, server is not going to be anywhere near AUS. Ping will be worse, and will be playing against mostly asians. And most asians have a natural +400APM in the DNA.

Be as it may; the Beta server has <=10,000? wait till the game comes out =]

I dont think Blizzard would group us with South East Asia if the latency reduction was not big. I think people are over reacting, i hope we can test this during the beta.

It sucks not being able to play with your friends and I'll be moving to aus in a few months, so I'm hoping they let me switch my EU copy over so I don't have to buy 2, but I'm not sure I buy into the lack of competitive play arguement. Surely there's going to be a lot of decent players from the SE asian countries? And the new ladder system makes it easy to get decent games against competent players without having to speak their language.
In BW were you able to log onto 2 different servers at the same time with the same key, or was the authentication global?

It would not be a hard sell. I have 4 friends who are all keen for SC2. I am sure I can get them all to migrate if I want too. what about when your super best friend johnny goes out and buys the game of his own accord because everyones been talking about it, but now hes stuck alone on the dead empty oceanic server (lets be totally honest its gonna be tiny, especially after a year when people are quitting because everyone else is quitting)

Yep pretty much - this is a lose lose move for us.

There just aren't that many players in Australia and SE Asia in general. That's why most games die (especially the competitive scenes) here. That is my main concern. I dread clicking "find match" and having to wait 15-30 minutes to find a single game because no one is playing. On iccup for example, in the last 50 or so games that I played only one was against an australian.

Does anyone have any insight regarding when we should expect blizz to implement these servers? I would imagine it would happen sometime soon during the beta.
|
No idea - but I'm not buying until we get more information.
|
i still slightly dislike the segregation but if you look on the bright side, only players from those countries can qualify for the quaterly ladders and tournaments they are sure to run
yes we have a much less talented player pool, much less players and varierty of strats and ALOT less custom maps (dota etc) creations to play
but that means we get close to 0 lag, and for the top national players but not top international players, alot higher chance to do well in tournaments since only players in our region can play.
im pretty sure indonesia and phillipines have very few pple who will play or pay that much (it retails at a more exp rate of $80US for standard copy - probably cause of the server setup costs) so that just leaves top players from australia/nz,singapore and malaysia.
im also happy that chn and kr have their own sever so theres much less problem with communication.
|
I remember trying to play in a singapore hosted BF2142 competition.
I got 400 ping (live in perth). The routing to SE asia is worst than the routing to USA :/ .
|
This is crazy, one of my best friends of all time is an aussie and I was the one who got him into SC. If SC2 is gunna keep us from playing he might as well cancel his pre-order. Can anyone confirm the ability to change servers by calling blizz?
|
Well it looks like this turned out to be the case, great :/
|
I don't really feel like playing in the SEA server too, can't communicate with most of the players there. Blizzard doesn't understand that Asia doesn't have any homogeneous language that we speak. I forsee the majority of the people in the server won't even be communicating properly with one another (Kalimdor (Asia) server in WC3 anyone)?
To add things up, I've been playing in the USWest server ever since Diablo II, and there's certainly almost no lag for me in those servers.
A money grubbing move by Blizzard from what I see. Disappointing, very disappointing.
EDIT: One more thing to add, one reason why I loved the USWest server was because there was a larger pool of custom games played. Looks like I won't be getting to play those games now that this has happened.

Ahh, sometimes being Australian sucks. We've always been neglected, and now that they're trying to do something, they're making it worse
