Any time you bind units/buildings to a hotkey (0-9), a button pops up right at the bottom of the main game screen area, with the number and a small picture of what's in the group. However their feature of re-binding the hotkeys by simply right clicking the button is really obnoxious, as at least for me, I often accidentally right click the button when I'm actually just trying to right click on the ground to move my units south. Usually I've over-written the hotkey with all my hatcheries in a group and it only happens in the heat of battles so it's a giant pain
I really would like to see an option in the menu to disable accidental clicks on these buttons, just like they have a similar option for the "Help" buttons at the top of the game screen.
(this isnt new with patch 9, it's been in for a while)
+ Show Spoiler [additional zerg fixes Im hoping for] +Also please change Ventral Sacs hotkey so that not every zerg player who's ever breathed on SC2 will inevitably accidentally research it every time they go to make overlords when there's no larvae available. And even more significantly for zerg, fix the Select Larvae problem detailed here. And banelings/overseers/broodlords shouldn't auto-move to rally points after morphing either. No need to mention the obvious major exploit that's going to be hotfixed today.

UPDATE: 04/03/11
Hey, just wanted to bump this thread to let everyone know that blizzard ninja'd this change into a recent patch! go to options->gameplay->control groups and select unclickable!
THANKS BLIZZARD! I just noticed this yesterday.
______________________________________
Bumping this thread because I've had it with this problem! Every game I have to fix hotkeys I accidentally override, and sometimes I end up falling behind in macro because my building hotkeys get screwed up and I don't notice. It just makes the game more frustrating to play for no reason, and I know a lot of players share my sentiment.
I made a thread on the battle.net forums to try to get blizzard to make this feature toggleable. Please post there regarding your stance on this issue!
Edit: link to thread and poll http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/1253415436

i agree, ive had this problem early game when spamming :I but it still is annoying re hotkeying things t.t
yea seriously does anyone ever use this feature?
Oh so thats why this shit happens... Yeah remove this retarded gamelosing crap.
I agree. Needs to be toggled. So irritating. Even more irritating then the menus imo and those have an option. Closer to the action :[
Oops! I clicked on the battlefield. Let me go hunt down all of my queens and rebind them to my hotkey. It's only 30 seconds.

Are you talking about left clicking accidentally on the hotkey when you mean to click a unit instead and then right clicking to move it away? Yeah that's the other pain this causes besides accidentally overriding hotkeys. lol
How did this post not get more attention when Zelniq first made it? It's actually the most retarded 'feature' ever. I had it happen when I had scouting zerglings in the opponents base the other day and they ended up on my hatchery key so whenever I pushed S they stopped. Ended up floating like 700 minerals and losing them all.
Blizzard has to remove this.
IlI agree, this feature needs to be fixed only happens to me at the worst times.
Yay bump! Yay someone uses search feature!
This has been around for so long....and its been so garbag.e..T___T
I like the notifications to the left, but I hate how they are clickable, so I had to disable it. If the unclickable menu option disabled the notifications area from being clickable also, that would be really good.
Yeah I admit when I disabled the menu buttons (you can do this in the options) I expected it to also disable clicking of those hotkey buttons. I wish they'd just go away altogether.

I agree completely. Poor Zelniq, I do this far too often.
Countless amount of times I've overwritten preexisting binds and it's sooooo annoying stopping to figure out why my hotkeys aren't working -_-
Good idea posting on the bnet forums, Blizzard might notice and agree its a small problem that can be easily fixed.
yeah it is really annoying. and i always manage to click on my hatchery hotkey, which leads to a few seconds of annoying repair work.
signed afj
definitely needs to be changed, along with the sidebar notifications, which I think they are changing in the next patch.
EDIT: When you respond, make sure you like AFJ's OP too. I'm assuming this keeps popular topics towards the top, if it's not done simply by date.
There is never anything wrong with giving an ui feature to be disabled. I don't have issues with this but I support it.
Yeah this pisses me off often
yes please make it toggle-able
I actually didn't know about this feature, but now that I do and it explains a lot of "mysterious" hot-key changes I have experienced over the months.
There has been so many new changes with UI Options in every patch. (For eg in patch 1.2 you can show hotkeys on button, in patch 1.1 you can toogle the clock. If this get to their attention this will be easily patched.

really +1 here about this too, I have it happen to me quite a bit when I play, and coupled with the fact that my graphics+cpu aren't up to...speed with the game...makes it even more annoying
I totally hate this as well. Nothing like accidently a few units to your hatcheries and suddenly not being able to select larva quickly or queen inject on the fly.

lol... totally missed the "Old Post" and saw that the next post was Dec 06 so figured it was recent. >.<
I have done this a few times and until recently I had no idea what was going on, then I realized I was right clicking the hotkey icon. Definitely needs a toggle.
I just started playing zerg a few weeks ago and noticed random hotkey changes during games and was wondering wtf was going on. This seems like a stupid feature. Completely unnecessary, Blizzard. I hope they see this thread.
So that's how I end up with totally retarded control groups in the middle of the game. I honestly can't understand why this feature is in the game. I suppose it functions as controls groups for people who don't even use the keyboard, why the fuck do we need this?
For the new player it's a good intro to control groups, but it should DEFINITELY be toggleable. It's sometimes nice to see what you ahve (unit counts etc) but maybe they could have three modes?
1) invisible 2) visible but unclickable 3) visible and clickable.

I'd be content with these three options. The ability to open up the space completely would be nice as well.

Hah I did a double take the first time I went to reply to make sure I wasn't hopping on one of those dead and gone thread revivals.
So that's what it is... was wondering why sometimes I had to rebind all my hatcheries because all of a sudden my mutas were bound to it... figured I'd accidently been overwriting my 4 hotkey in some way... but this is most likely it. Can be very annoying at times.. :x
agreed. happens to me all the time..
i wish they would move the "help" and "options" tabs at the top or give the option to hide them.. so many times i am trying to box units and left click the "options" or "help" tabs.
Not sure why this hasn't been changed yet. New players don't even know about this functionality, so it's just both really pointless and annoying. It's one of those tiny changes that should have already made it into a patch (along with a health bar toggle on ALT, as opposed to having to hold it down).

You can't hide them, but you can already make them unclickable. Check your options.

omg yes! ty

it happens me very often. Its really really annoying.
Never happens to me. I mean seriously never.
Of course having it optional would be nice.
This drives me absolutely insane! I can't count how many times I've unhotkey'd my hatch and switched it with my queens. :<
I lost a game in a bo7 of a local tournament grand finals because my muta hotkey took over all my hatchery hotkeys, and my lings took over my muta hotkey which happened to be flying towards a group of thors. They really need to change this. ):
My biggest problem is clicking the goddamn help menu tab when I'm running away from battles.
This is such an awful mechanic, I honestly cannot believe there is no way to hide or at least disable those buttons. This has caused me no end of annoyance in games thus far, and I really wish they'd do something about it.
I think it's for touch screen controls that blizzard is playing around.

Yeah those alerts completely screw me sometimes when im microing mutas. Those and the damn hotkeys needa be disabled O_O
Agree, I have lost so many games cos I rebinded my hotkeys mid-fight then cant macro out replacement army quickly enough
Support this whole heartedly... It's annoying as hell.

Thankfully I'm not the only person with this problem. This messes me up a lot when I'm microing my scout around and I scroll down + right click at the same time. It overrides my building hotkeys unknowingly and I end up not realizing it.
i only accidently click on the left area of the screen that shows events. and when u click on it, it directs ur screen to said event. SO ANNOYING
fuck this damn hotkey "aid", i made a thread on this a few months ago, because i hated this hotkeybar, and that i didnt know zelniq created a thread already. this is my most hated thing in all of sc2 -_-

Uhg, yes this is the single worst UI feature in Sc2. I hate this so much. When I saw this thread was bumped I was hopping it was an undocumented feature in the upcoming patch. No luck I guess.
I have a bad game today.....
I 4 gate and accidently right click my army onto hotkey 5[the gateways],when I A-move to my opponent's base, I pressed 5 and S and click. My stalkers stop their attack every damn second T_T
this was on PTR and luckily i still won that game.

It's a stupid feature which will never catch on. I've miss-clicked a few times and it's annoying as hell to have to re-group something during a crucial moment. So, I doubt anyone actually uses it.
dont forget that recent gsl game that i think was lost because of this "feature". i remember it was a zerg but dont remember who. he used a nydus into the protoss nat and all of his queens decided to attack the protoss base, lol.

Happens to me all the time with hatcheries and queens

that made me laugh - it's almost as if it is disabled and suddenly toggles on when you engage haha
It's a very fair developmental request imo - these little tweaks just make the game a lot more pleasant to play
Oooh so that's what has been happening to me, thanks for shedding clarity on the issue Zelniq. I had no clue what was going on, it's so frustrating to hit my hatchery key and find that it's now a backup control group for my scouting lings. When this happens during battles it's ridiculous, I have to go clicking and rebinding my hatcheries like a madman. A new UI option to disable this method of rebinding would be very much appreciated.

oh yeah so this one tournament match, final game in a bo3..
coming down to 1 large battle, ive got all my mutas lings and banes in 3 separate groups, terran tries to move into the center of the map and I position my army carefully below for the right moment to attack..it comes and then I 1a2a3a all my units into his just now sieged tanks, marines and medivacs... with great speed and fury all my mutalisks and zerglings rush in..my banes on the other hand just chillin back watching from safety. of course my lings get blown to bits by tank fire and mutas pop to marines, I notice the mistake and try to pull back as it's too late to bring the banes in now, but it's too late, my army is nearly all gone.
of course what happened was as I moved my units down right before I attacked, as right clicking downwards also happens to be where the group buttons are, I clicked the group button that had my banelings in it, overwriting it and therefore making me lose the game and knock myself out of the tourney.
Please get this more attention! I had know idea what was going on, then carefully watching a replay i realised all those times I've unbinded my hatches during a battle is from missclicks on their control group button. It's so frustrating doing rebinds right when you need to replenish your army...

Great idea. I was wondering what was causing that awful screwing up of my control groups.
I would like them making this a toggle-able option.
Totally agree. I had a wishlist in the beta with this on it. So frustrating to be in a heated battle and do this. Since then I've trained myself to not get near the last inch or so of the screen area... which sucks because I'd like my usable space back!@
So while I'm at it, where the hell is my "show hp bars" in game toggle option (not the current hold down ALT, but an actual toggle that is, press once on, press once off)?

On December 08 2010 08:18 Existor wrote: You can change all hotkeys ingame after 1.2
Lol changing hotkeys has nothing to do with this. We are talking about the clickable buttons that appear on the screen as a result of setting a hotkey group.

Its amazing how Blizzard is just ignoring this issue.
We've been complaining since ever, yet nothing has been done.

I want to know who thought clicking to choose a hotkey was a good idea. If anything I think, they should be their own separate groups from the keyboard bindings. If someone's using the mouse to set and select groups, the keyboard shouldn't even be relevant in that case.
It's happened to me so many times where my hotkeys get into a tangled mess even when I do realize that EVERY single time my hotkeys are messed up, it's because I accidentally clicked one of the visual control groups.
Oh God this is so damn annoying, happens all the damn time too.
I've lost games on this alone. It's incredibly infuriating.
This needs to get brought further into Blizzard's attention - ffsure

Actually, that's a great idea. Separate from the usual control group keys would fix everybody's problem, and it may be easier to code for Blizzard.
Nice post. Absolutely would like to see this fixed. It's really bizarre how it's always the hatchery hotkey too, right? haha.
Yes I'm actually surprised how long it took for someone to point this out.. I can pretty safely say I've lost games because of this.. I mean overwriting your hatchery hotkey and rebinding your entire army to "4" unintentionally in the heat of battle is a pretty big deal.. especially when I go to hit "4" "S" to select drones and end up stopping my entire army in the middle of a retreat or battle... yea not a good thing.. very frustrating.
I am not really sure if I did understood everything correctly or if this even been corrected but I think the hotkeys bottons arent that much of any issue.
If I have to move my army somewhere, I always use the mini map. Maybe it is just a factor of how big your screen is. I can see how annoying it could be to click the groups instent of moving down.
As far as im concerned, I prefer to use the grid instent of the standar hotkeys. Soon they will be customisable in patch 1.2 so you will be able to change the keys around and get rid of the overlord sack problem. Things are more visual with the grid. You dont have to remember what letter is adressed to what. It works just like if you transposed the commands on your keyboard. Took me a little while to change from standar to grid because of larva vomit but it is much easier now.
About the larve, I don't know what dinamic was fixed into it but I do like the fact that the eggs are easilly clickable now. No idea if you noticed, but you can actually give orders to the egg right after it is created. I always place my workers around before they hatch to get the best mineral income as possible.
For the larvas, I find 0, q, q much more convenient for doing drones. You can just wait at the 0 step and check on your larva count from the icon then press qq. I usually just leave my finguer on q so as soon as I have the larva or the mineral to build my drones it goes into larva and drone automatically. No need to continiously spam your keyboard and paranoid under your hatchery for larvas.
Hope this was helpfull.
I concur with this thread! I hate this and am actually surprised they haven't added functionality to prevent this from happening in Patch 1.2.
Blizzard, help!
didint even rly know about this until recently, always ended up wondering why my 6th hokey was now an overlord or a drone instead of my hatcheries? rly annoying.
oh WTF, this is what was replacing my hotkeys? D:
yeah, happened to me all the time
i'm not sure, but it didn't occur since i checked "unclickable menubar" (or whatever it is in the english version). i'm not sure if it's turned off, or if i just happen to not click it anymore.
maybe someone could confirm this.
Yes this is quite annoying, too bad it doesn't seem to be getting much attention. Hopefully Blizzard will fix this in the future.
It's because there isn't much awareness at all on this because it's happened to me before and I honestly though I had somehow in my spam of finger banging my keyboard, had overridden the hotkey itself.
I actually went back in a replay awhile back where I wanted to find out 'when' I overwritten my hatcheries hotkey because I wanted to know how long it had been and never made that connection on why I would be 'holding' control at all during that point of the game other than finger spasms.
I have tendency (As most Brood War Zerg players do I would assume) to not look at my base at all for a full minute when a lot of other things are going on (SC2 Queen injecting with mini map) and that's a long time to not produce 'anything' if you expect your hotkey to still be there.
---------------------
TL;DR should be fixed.
OMFG I HATE when VS upgrades when i make ovies. It eats up 200 gas at moments when i desperately need it.
The reason I like the feature is because a lot of newer players to sc2 will be able to learn how the mechanic works, but yeah, make it toggleable for the vets.
I totally support this thread.
I have lost more than once to those stupid icons. Generally with me I lose 6 (my rax) and replace it with units, completely ruining my ability to macro up my core units before going back to base and laboriously re-hotkeying all the rax.
I should be able to turn it off. Seems like a minor change.
I support this thread 120% i fucking hate when this happens an have actually lost quite a good amount fo games because of it.
I have often changed my hotkeys without me knowing how the hell it happened. This is probably one (not only one) reason why it happens.
OMG +1 dude, this has happened to me so many times, and the really annoying this is I never knew what was going on, I do it sooo often when I'm drunk and I thought I was just an F-ing retard and pressed crtl+5 during battle cause I was drunk. But after reading this thread I realized it's this stupid shit...
Oh yea and it is strange how it's always 5 for me, never any other key just 5 ><.
Blizzard Please FIx This!
Yes this should be changed ASAP.
There is another "feature" for Zerg just as annoying and stupid, the hatchery rally points can be reset?!?! Why does this feature even exists?
If you right click on the hatchery 3 times or more it resets the rally points! I know some will say don't right click on the hatch (which I don't do as much because I'm aware of the problem now) but you could be microing some units on your mineral line or you might simply be spamming commands and next thing you know your rally points are reset. The point is, there is no reason for the rally points EVER to be reset. Especially the mineral rally point! This "feature" is just as annoying as accidentally right clicking on a hot key tab in the heat of battle.
So in recap: (in case Blizzard reads this)
* Right clicking on a hot key tab should NOT re-program your hot keys!
* Right clicking 3 times on your hatchery should NOT reset your rally points!
* And lastly, could Zerg please get a 3rd rally point for overlords? Pretty please? it drives me nuts trying to select my units under my OLs, and it's not like OL can quickly move out of the way! I feel sometimes I get the OL speed upgrade just so I can move them the hell out of my way.
anyone else notice how blizzard's 'convenient' hotkey features actually fuck over players? e.g. hotkey bar, notification popups on the side, d for drop, hatchery reset, etc -_-
On December 11 2010 18:32 lowlypawn wrote:* Right clicking on a hot key tab should NOT re-program your hot keys!

Can you select larvae, spawn 3 OV, right-click somewhere to have them rally there, then spawn whatever with the rest and still have these larvae follow the default rally points? Or maybe select larvae, VVV, right click, select larvae, whatever.
Still troublesome, but it could be a very handy habit.
Ahhh, most useful necro ever haha ^^ I agree, it should be disableable. It's really sick for replays and visual organization, but the clicking is useless.
Haha so you have made a DT? hahaha I have 4 scans saved up *scan* *scan* what the flip! *scan* argh my hotkeys are wrong! Well I lost that army, time to make a new one.

Hey, just wanted to bump this thread to let everyone know that blizzard ninja'd this change into a recent patch! go to options->gameplay->control groups and select unclickable!
THANKS BLIZZARD! I just noticed this yesterday.
I actually cannot tell you how many times I have had this happen to me when I spend 200 gas on an upgrade for drop when I meant to make an overlord. I always am like wtf, why can't I make my spire I just had 200 gas
Thank god. Un-hotkeying your hatcheries was like literally an auto-loss in some late-game scenarios. Takes a good 15 seconds to pan around and add every hatchery you have.
I hope they add the option to disable double click on units selecting all units of the same type. I use control click for that, I dont need the double click and it just causes problems when i accidentally double click on a probe and all the other probes stop mining :/
