So anyone got some explanation on the decals in sc2?

Seems like they are included in patch 9 so lets keep all the discussions regarding them in this thread.

are they just different model textures? e.g. thor model that comes with $100 sc2? or is that thor model completely different.

They're emblems to stick on your units.

To my understanding, you earn them in a similar fashion to (Or perhaps along with) achievements, and then you can apply them in your profile and make your units look cool, have your tanks have sharks drawn on them or something, etc etc.

I look forward to actually earning a few so I know more about them.

Decals are different, I think its so you can have an "icon" on all of your units to show that they are yours. We'll see when the patch comes. (I thought decals were single player only but since they are released now I guess its multiplayer as well)

pretty sure i heard somewhere that decals r icons, symbols or emblems that will be place on your units. the best example of this would be the protoss nexus. instead of the Protoss emblem, a custom decal will show

The little icons that you see on shoulers, on protoss cannons, etc are the decals. You can earn different decals that let your opponent know that you are SRS BZNS.

Later on, you'll be able to pay real life money for cool decals and avatars.

It's basically just a way for Blizzard to cash in on players desire to be different, the same way they cash in on vanity pets and mounts in WoW.

I'm hoping that I can earn some thing really macho to put on my units, like two dudes hugging and sharing manly tears.
Don't let me say this, but you're no worse than me; it's crazy.

Excuse me? What are you babbling about? I didn't say it's a bad thing or a good thing, so stop projecting your angst onto my post.

It's simply a fact that decals exist, that you can earn them, and that eventually you'll be able to buy them on the Blizzard store. It's not exactly a secret, even if it hasn't been announced. Mike Morhaime has been talking about their desire to "monetize" battle.net since v2.0 was first announced. It's something that exists, like gravity. Like it or don't like it, but don't call me a "hater" because I'm educating you about it.
Don't let me say this, but you're no worse than me; it's crazy.

Pretty sure I remember seeing them showing a Pandaren Decal on some of the unit buildings at Blizzcon while they were doing the SC2/Battle.net Preview, cannot wait to get this

I'm guessing there is probably going to be the basic ones you can get with achievements and stuff + the exclusive ones from CE.

Didn't even think about this till you mentioned it, but honestly, from Blizzard's standpoint, this wouldn't be a bad idea.

Edit: Some Tournament winner-exclusive ones would be pretty cool as well, like a little trophy or something.

I personally like it when companies do stuff like this because it lets them make money through micro-transactions and doesn't affect the gameplay or cause the MP to need a subscription to play. The more money they make post-release from SC2 translates to more post-release support. It takes a lot more to keep things running these days.

+1 on that.

I'd really hate to see the game look like WoW, with the achievements and all that crap might as well add raidbosses x.x

To take a note from a different RTS, I really like the concept of decals b/c it reminds me of the Army Painter in DoW and DoW2. I mean it's one thing to have a color, it's another to have the customization you had in the DoW series.

Depending on how they're implemented, I think the decals could be a good thing as far as spectators and pro games are concerned. Assuming these decals aren't some garish pieces of crap I could see them working as instant identifiers for certain players. Imagine if Boxer's marines or July's mutas had a specific look where the instant you see a game on TV you could identify them. Those vultures on TV aren't just any vultures, they're Nada's vultures. Expanding that out, maybe pro teams could have their own decals (kinda like jerseys for sports teams), where players from the same team will have the same decals so you can instantly tell who is playing whom.

decals could be cool if they are some sort of personalization that could require a type of password or clan tag to use.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, decals are these cool ass looking icons that are displayed around your buildings (at least that's how I seen it for zerg).

I, too, enjoy complaining about every feature possible. Especially if the feature in question doesn't actually do what I'm complaining it does, and/or does the opposite.

Here here. If I see someone complain about something illogically, I love to follow suit!

"Achievements? Crap, needs an option to disable." I fail to see how it's hurting/bothering you at all....Just don't pay attention to it if they bother you so much.

I think they devs are really trying to get all skill levels involved in this game. They talk about how their approach for new players is a wave of: single player -> 3v3 -> 2v2 -> 1v1. Where new players can play on a team and then become comfortable enough to play 1v1.

I think decals will help identify players in 2v2+. Especially if two players are the same race.

It is also just an aesthetic option.

And I was never big on achievements when they came out. But it does add a lot to the game, and its nice to get benchmarks little "rewards" as you play.

Love 'em or hate 'em the general population seems to enjoy them a lot.

Stuff like this doesn't detract in any way from high level competitive play, and gives players not at that level something to work towards and/or show off. Yes, it's a little pointless, but it's also fun, and encourages people to explore all aspects of the game.

I'm all for anything that expands the playerbase without hurting gameplay.

Aesthetically, I don't really like them... but maybe that will change over time.

They definitely allow for brand/player recognizability though, and can also allow for some degree of advertising, which would of course be beneficial towards esports

I'm very positive that if SC2 becomes as big (or bigger) an esport someone will figure out how to make custom decals (Kespa anyone?) or Blizzard will just give in so long as it's a very established and successful progaming team.

I mean, the Korean progaming teams already have their little logos and such so implementing them as decals wouldn't be too difficult.

They could allow clans above a certain membership number to create custom decals. Or perhaps charge pro-teams a nominal fee... =)

At least for Zerg the decals are terribly implemented. Can't imagine how Activision thinks they're going to be able to make money off of them tbh. And while achievements are nice, I'd like to be able to turn off the notification for when friends get achievements. Even WoW doesn't have a window pop up blocking part of your screen when guildmates get achievements etc., and the gameplay isn't as involved as it is here. I'd be furious if I accidentally clicked on achievement spam during an endgame battle.

does clicking a friend's achievement notification in-game actually bring up some window? Maybe it would be better to just write out the achievement and who got it in the chat zone, as though a player were saying it.

Why nerdrager? Decals are barely noticeable even if you're looking for them. Only for Zerg will you notice them without intending to, and even then not really.

I don't see the downside of being able to disable them. Not like the people who use them won't be able to see them on their own screens. It just means that the opponent will see your base as normal.
