This competition isn't "cruel" as people keep saying, it wasn't created to foster animosity or to prove a point about selfishness. TL is built around its community, from the people who stream or contribute in other ways, to the people who have been around forever with thousands of posts, to the people who lurk in every thread never feeling compelled to contribute their own opinion. While some of you might think that some of those above categories are more deserving of keys than the others, none of those groups are responsible for the keys that are being given out. The reason why TL has keys to give out in the first place is because it's a community site, and that community isn't simply a sum of the constituent parts. This wouldn't be a community if all we cared about were the people we knew personally, or the people who helped contribute the most. What makes it a community is our ability to empathize with other members we may not know very well based solely on their shared participation of TL.
Do everyone a favor and take yourself off the list, who cares if the keys go to people who have only posted a few times, be happy for your fellow TLer regardless of if its your best friend or someone you've never heard of. Today, let teamliquid be the only thing you share with the person you help, and let it be enough. I know a lot of you believe that you a very deserving because of your specific situation, and while I agree that you may be in a deserving situation, until you cross your name off you will never be a deserving person. You make a very valid point. Believe me, I have been turning this decision repeatedly in my mind, whether or not to withdraw from this list of names. I believe you are correct in your analysis of what TL should be. I believe you are correct in the honor of being selfless so that another member may enjoy the key, maintaining TL as enough of a bond to justify this act. I just have two problems. First, many people who crossed off their names aren't doing so because they really want someone else to enjoy their key. Some of them just don't want the scorn by their fellow members. Like you said, TL is a community, and to have your community look down upon you as a group is not a fun position to be in. I really do appreciate each of you that have removed yourselves because of selflessness. You guys make me smile. Secondly, it almost undermines the concept of the OP. The idea was to nominate who we believed would be deserving of getting a key. However, if we are to rely on the principle of giving the keys to any one on TL to enjoy, then it should have been a random drawing instead. That way we could all have an equal opportunity to enjoy this key, and be equally shared in the joy of any member getting that key. I appreciate the insight, I don't think anyone else has addressed the issue in your perspective yet. All in all, I hope this experience becomes a positive one for TL.
Answering your two problems In response to your first 1. It doesn't matter what the intentions of the people who did cross themselves off the list were. Your decision to act shouldn't be based on the rational of others, it should be based on your situation. It's not an excuse that other people may have only crossed their names because they cared about how they would be perceived by others, at least some number of those people did it because they care about this community, and if you don't do the same you should take responsibility for making that decision. 2. Not removing yourself from the list is a blatant smack in the face to what this community represents. It shows that when push comes to shove we still behave as self interested individuals and not a tight knit community who share in the happiness of each other. Say what you will about others, but your decision to keep your name on the list reflects how you prioritize this community against your own myopic self interests.
In response to your second 1. The spirit of the OP was to reward those who we believed contributed most to this community. It's purpose was to recognize those who help make TL, TL. The goal was always to promote community, what's changed is the way in which we do so. The situation now isn't only about who gets keys, it's more than that, it's about whether this thread will encourage people to act like a community or act like children. 2. What you aren't taking into account is the concept behind this thread. This thread wasn't created to punish you, it was created on the belief that we are a community.
Some food for thought. Imagine you're on a lifeboat with a maximum capacity of 30 people and currently there are 60. You have to self opt yourselves to drown in order to save others and if none of you choose to do so you'll all drown. Do you want to do nothing and hope that other people are better human beings than you or take responsibility over your own fate and do something that might actually matter.
Feel free to keep arguing your point, but its just an excuse to make yourself feel better about a choice your unwilling to make. When the next TSL rolls around, ask yourself what you've done to deserve everything this community has offered you. You have the unique opportunity now to change what that answer will be.

Why would you think that they would just be like "HAVE A BETA KEY!" when you signed up for teamliquid? Why no drawing? Cause they want to see the people that would stick around on teamliquid.net. How is this cruel or mean, please explain that to me.

Once again someone with a bad analogy. The keys won't be destroyed if people don't opt out. People won't drown if people don't sacrifice themselves. They'll just find a better way of deciding who gets the keys/lifeboat seat. Wanting this contest to fail is the best course of action imo, cause the process of determining who gets a key is fucked up and doesn't even match with the intention of picking who's the most deserving.

not related to ur time travel statement. You guys are like the audience that a recent southpark episode made fun of, those who read into things. It's not like Hot bid was like, if I do this option then...bla bla sociological experiment bla la psychological experiment... They are just creatively giving out keys. It's like thinking someone who wrote a bok a out a dog chasing a cat who chased a mouse was implying the government is evil and health care is the next step to communism and that in 2012 the world will end...
You don't know that I'm unwilling. I am willing, in fact. There is a considerable difference between willing and doing, but in your case scenario, the actions are more important than the intentions. You don't know what I'm going to be doing yet, if I do anything.
In the hypothetical situation, some of the people on the list would be comparable to a person on the lifeboat who has extensive knowledge of emergency medical procedures, which would be very helpful if they somehow became stranded somewhere.. Or is perhaps is a stronger man than many of the others on the boat, making it more likely that they will row to shore because he has a lot of endurance. Or someone with a family back at home. There are many reasons as to why someone may feel more inclined to live above the others, especially if others are practically pushing people aside yelling "I WANNA LIVE RAWRAR." Granted, this scenario is highly more intense than one about a beta key.
I don't like that you began to assume my intentions, but you have brought up an interesting point. Thinking about the hundreds and hundreds of people who use this site daily, what's to say that any of us deserve what the community has given us? Of course there are those who obviously do. But then there's everyone else.
It's just a hard place to be. We need to find the fun of this nomination process again.
Yay! Some of us are actually going to be able to get beta keys! :D (No sarcasm whatsoever. When you really think about it again, it's really awesome that this is happening in the first place. These types of things don't happen often. 50 keys for TL! )
