GLHF.tv is a streaming group dedicated to researching and producing high quality live streams and coverage of StarCraft 2 Tournaments. During the SC2 beta we pioneered streaming technologies and saved tournaments and events with our last minute production capabilities. The streaming technology researched here at GLHF has gone on to help others in the SC2 Community, including the Day[9] Daily and DJWheat.tv

Hi I'm Justin "TheGunrun" Ignacio, an ex-Command and Conquer fanboy/modder/commentator turned StarCraft 2 streamer/caster/enthusiast. I have a disorder which makes me want to have the best stream quality all the time, but I never take it too far I've casted with the world's greatest and try my damndest to bring you guys entertainment and quality production. The stream tech that I developed and brought over from C&C has played an important role in moving forward SC2 streaming/coverage. No matter what, I never stop trying to find ways to improve the stream or overall live experience for the viewers.

I have offered commentary to a myriad of games, such as Quake3 (1v1,tdm,ctf,RA3,TA), StarCraft, WarCraft 3(vanilla and dota), Call of Duty (1,2,4/modern warfare), DOA4 and others. I listed Quake 3 first because that's where my roots are as a commentator, in fps, not rts. I put down StarCraft for a very long time until I was linked to Tasteless' commentary for GOMtv which rekindled my love for SC.
I hope you enjoy our coverage, we're working hard to improve it every day. As it stands, I'm the most knowledgeable caster when it comes to SC2 that GLHF.tv has to offer, which is why I consider it my job to make sure the casts aren't just entertaining, but also insightful. I used to main Terran but switched to Random during phase 1 beta to get more familiar with the other match-ups and I have no regrets. Though it's far harder to adapt to game changes, I really feel that playing Random has given me a better understanding of the game. I encourage you to try it some time!

I'm Trevor "Scan" Scanlon, SC2 commentator and all around gaming fanatic. I began casting in late 2009 with TheGunrun near the end of the lifespan of Red Alert 3, and transitioned over to Starcraft 2 with him shortly after. I am a graduate of Emerson College with a degree in Film Production (though I know more about TV production). I've moved to the Los Angeles area to follow my career, but you can find me streaming a myriad of games on GLHF under the banner of "Scananigans". As veteran commentators from other games, we want to thank everyone for the warm welcome and we hope you enjoy our coverage. We try to offer some kind of stream every day, as long as matches and servers allow it. Because of this our schedule can be rather short notice, for which we apologize. We're rather sociable, so feel free to drop us a message.
Events/Tournaments/Coverage: If you have a tournament/event and are looking for coverage, feel free to contact us. If you have your own commentators, we're can skype them in, and we'll just do production.
GLHF streams a whole bunch of events and, as usual, the more e-Sports coverage, the merrier as far as I'm concerned :D.
Also, I'd like to extend a personal thanks to the GLHF.tv crew! They took 2 hours out of their day to explain to me how to setup significantly better streaming quality (including advising me on hardware/software. they did the complete works).
I hope they update the OP with a little about themselves though. They are definitely awesome fellows 8>
I really like your stream. Quality is great and not even a single lag spike. Work on your SC2 knowledge because youve got huge potential. Also idea of music in background is great )
Haha, watched Idra vs. Nazgul. Commentators and observer makes me extremely sad. I'm glad you covered that Blistering Sands strat on your Day9 series because I would have not appreciated it nearly as much from just watching these guys' cast.
On the upside, if these guys are helping fix Day9's stream, that's excellent news!

I was just about to comment on that commentary (found HERE) and watching it I have some suggestions for improvement:
Nazgul's "wall-off-strategy" was totally unknown to the commentators and consequently it got commented the wrong way. Sure he used the same 1-Gate-Chrono-aggression as the other games, but he built a Forge pretty early and walled himself in completely. That is a major difference. If you want to cover "the big names" you might want to learn their strategies and Day[9] is easy enough to watch. He did explain this "wall off and use backdoor as exit" strategy in one of his casts.
Consequently the comments on Nazgul taking down his own back door rocks to open up an exit again was commented the wrong way. ALSO: The two commentators were looking at "different destructible rocks" and consequently the comments were unrelated. Maybe stick to ONE view by having one follow the camera of the other?
When I try to watch the replays I get loads of bugs which close my browsers (Firefox and IE). I havent had any problems of this sort when doing it from other VOD sites. Since you said you were using your own wild combination of Hard- and Software to make it work some errors might have crept into the replay site?
The really cool thing about watching a Day[9] cast is that he makes a prediction about what is going to happen next and he is right most of the time. We cant all be him, but getting it wrong after something has happened really shows a lack of knowledge and experience.
EDIT: While watching the VOD above I noticed something: You keep moving the screen ever so little every half second even during a battle. That makes following the action harder.
A few years back, when I hung out with a bunch of other guys in a LAN Café to play games, some guy awarded me the title of "Captain Obvious" ... and he was right. I always commented on things after they happened. As a commentator you do not want that title and you should be aware of the danger.
All other grievances with the music and the choice of game to cast I have written in the ZOTAC cup thread.
I've been filing the co-caster slot occasionally for glhf.tv, and just because I know thegunrun is waaaay too modest to do this about himself let me fill you guys in a little. When he says "an old Command and Conquer commentator" he means "the old Command and Conquer commentator". Sure the competitive c&c community was considerably smaller, but he is/was their go-to guy for streaming, which is why he's spent 2 years fine tuning his streaming setup. That's where the ridiculous quality from the stream comes from.
As a broadcaster/streamer even EA themselves recognized his abilities, sending him to Germany and LA to cover events for them.
I wasn't there for the matches that you guys brought up, Zeeone was co-casting. This was their first cast together. Though it's not an excuse per say, their synergy is bound to get better rapidly. Dual-commentator casting means having to focus and track way different things then solo-casting. I give my personal guarantee that at least this aspect while get considerably better as they go. I had to cast a different tournament for a different broadcasting station saturday and ran into the same problems because I was casting with someone I had never met before (ie. talking over eachother a lot), the synergy will improve.
Meanwhile we're teaching thegunrun everything from maynard transfer timings to things that don't even really apply much like manner pylons to 1up his general starcraft 1 knowledge, so when he sees things he hasn't seen in sc2 before he can still make insightful deductions.
He's no day[9], but he is a wellrounded and skilled commentator, willing to put in the time and effort to make his stream a meaningful addition to the list. Now I'm going to go into hiding so that when he reads this, I won't have to reply to his "omg I can't believe you posted all that", "that's so embarrassing", "they didn't need to know about all the c&c/EA stuff!".
As a final note, I'm personally excited about the evolution of glhf.tv, we would very much appreciate your support and appreciate your criticism and help in making the commentary better.
First of all I appreciate anyone that contributes to the community. You really don't want the SC community to become like the fighting community. Trust me.
Second, while their commentary might not provide as much insight to a seasoned player as Day[9]'s commentary,.they are doing their best and they are improving for each week.
Btw TheGunrun is allowed to have terrible taste in music - he is Asian. ;P
Just got one thing that i really want to be gone in the next casts - the background music- Some people might say it´s so low volume anyway, so who cares? I do! since it´s even more annoying to have a bad song running on very low so that you can´t hear any ingame sounds and it takes the focus away from the game. This usually ends up in muting the stream.
Please get rid of the music and keep trying to learn game aspects, then you might have a decent cast in the end. As another guy said earlier in the thread, try to not become "captain obvious" telling what happens all the time, a good thing for every caster to think about.
The quality and the commentating experience these guys have is amazing.
That being said, there are 2 big things, which need to improve.
First of all, the knowledge about the game is far from what it should be. I think or hope that will improve each time with a bit of effort put in. The second is knowledge about the community. It is essential to have a bit of background knowledge of the players to fill voids throughout the cast e.g. waiting to join a game, waiting to start and game and so on.
BTW I got a problem with the stream. I constantly get a black screen after several minutes watching and have to reload the site. I can watch every other livestream fine. I dont know if i miss sth but perhaps anyone had a similar problem ans knows how to fix it.
Tonight at 20:30 CEST, 2:30 pm for the east coast US, we'll be covering DeMusliM vs DIMAGA. Best of 3 for the Razer StarCraft II Beta Domination tournament.
As everyone that watched glhf.tv even once can see the stream quality is amazing and the only thing that needs to be improved is the knowledge of the casters about the game itself and maybe even most importantly about the players.
As far as i can see it it's not that hard to spend 30 min before start of the cast to check liquipedia so you can write down a few bits of information about players and just plug them in the cast. That makes casts really usefull.

Damn it, they're on to our plan *paranoid*. I was actually in the process of making a notebook in which I'd keep track of the players builds in various match-ups. Thanks for the feedback! We're doing out best to improve daily.
Tonight we're hoping to cast 2 Razer Domination tournament games on http://glhf.tv namely April 16 19:30 CEST, 1:30pm EDT, Strelok vs Nazgul April 16 21:00 CEST, 3:00pm EDT, Ret vs Nazgul
The DeMusliM vs Jinro game is in between those, but because of the overlap we probably can't show you any of those games unless Strelok vs Nazgul ends really quick. Posted a more in depth analysis of the match ups here; Razer Domination thread As much as my game-sense allows me to say anyway.
People have been having issues finding when we're streaming, so I got myself a twitter account just recently to make it easier for everyone. I hope to get more followers soon You can follow http://twitter.com/MartijnMumbles for updates on what I'm casting and what other streams interest me to get a heads up on what's good to watch. I suppose now I truly am a web 2.0 media whore.
Commentators don't really know whats going on though. Might be an idea to learn a bit more about Starcraft 2 for future casts. Don't need to be Day9 but knowing the difference between a 2 gate and a gate core and pointing that out for example should be a given.

I like to think we've at least mastered that much of the game to say the least. If even something like that isn't becoming apparent in the cast, perhaps we just need to stress buildorders more and worry less about scouting and skirmishes? Does that sound right at all?
On April 16 2010 23:21 Eury wrote: Why isn't this stream added to the user streams?
In short, because I'm an idiot and forgot who Kennigit told me to pm about having events added and becoming a featured stream. We will be soon hopefully, TL allowing. I'm digging through my log files!

Well here I think we can see where you might be looking at it the wrong way. What makes a good commentator is someone who knows how to look at everything without talking about everything. You need to treat each match as if you were playing it, if that makes any sense, and commentate on significant occurrences as, or even better, before they actually happen.
For a very basic example, a protoss player is sending out 2 stalkers to put pressure on his opponent, so the camera might focus on that. However, as this is going on, he might be researching warp prism speed and could therefore be preparing some sort of drop to follow on from his early pressure. You would hopefully spot this and you could quickly move the camera to the robotics bay and show how far the upgrade is to completion. You could then talk about what this might mean in the future. As the camera shows all these things, you could talk about how successful the early pressure is/has been, how the opponent reacted to the outcome of the battle and how prepared he might be if a drop were to come.
As you can tell, I'm not very experienced with all the multitude of build orders and possibilities but if you want to keep getting better as a commentator, you'll always need to keep improving your understanding of the game in order to be able to make these sorts of predictions. You'll find that as you get more experienced you'll be feeling more confident at making predictions like that and as a result your viewers will be grateful for the added level of insight.
Finally, I don't think I can emphasize enough how important the camera work is because the viewers have no control over it and expect the observer(s) to spot what is happening on the mini map and show it. Again, this is where being a good player comes into the equation since being able to read the mini map quickly and efficiently forms part of the skills required to succeed at Starcraft.
You're probably already aware of these things having commentated RTSs before, but really wanted to get across the kind of insightful commentary that the people here are always very grateful to hear. It's all well and good having good matches to commentate but if the level of commentary doesn't increase as the viewer count might, people will be more prepared to look elsewhere.
We're not worried about a high or low viewer count as it is, we're well aware that it's a new community we're walking into and that there's a certain picking-order we have to oblige to until we get more seniority. Which we respect. As you noted we do have a lot of experience commentating different RTSs, but nothing is as unforgiving and technical as SC/SC2 in my book. Aside from a rare few, if we count different games as well I'm positive that we've casted more matches than almost anyone here, sadly that just only goes so far with SC2.
It being beta does make it harder to cast, for instance, many replays of just 2 weeks already are outdated with the style of play evolving so fast. Points to improve on for us are better tracking up the upgrades and paying more attention to the tech and less on the army.
Furthermore I completely understand what you're saying with predictions, but it takes a lot of confidence to say what these competitive players are going to do, before they do it. In many cases you're commenting on players that are simply much better then you in these tournaments. Especially seeming we're the "new guys", I'm not sure they'd even appreciate it. It is something we're very aware of and will hopefully transition into "during the midgame". As an example I've been hyping thor/medivac harass since the patch, but even as I was looking at Strelok making the armory I still had a hard time throwing it out there.
What I can promise you is that we're doing our best to learn a lot more about the players and their habits. For instance we've started taking notes of every match cast just recently to find trends in each players style. We hope to rapidly improve and I think we have been up to now.
There is 0 focus on any game aside from SC2 (even though it looks like I might get sent to Copenhagen at the end of the month to cover the SteelSeries esport challenge cod4, in case people that will attend that want to say hi), we're dedicating all our time as casters and players to SC2 right now and we are dead set on getting to the end of the long road to top level commentary.
Just a few things that have been irking me. My experience in SC2 is very little play (15 to 20 games played, silver league), but have watched countless of hours of streaming (pretty much all d9 dailies almost twice). Writing this as im watching the current Razer Domination stream.
- Don't play music. Theres quite a few (incl me) that dislike background music because it kinda distracts from everything else thats going on. In a sense, we are tuning in to listen to the cast and teh game, not some random jap techno. - GunRun is clueless for quite a few times. I really recommend learning a lot of the names/units/etc by heart. He is fumbling with names/units etc a lot. He even forgets where Martijn is from, when its his main co host :S. - Just now watching, Protoss player makes 1 robo and 2 gateways. Gunrun says: "Probably seeing some immortals maybe? I dont know..." . Instead of that, try to explain why the protoss might be going for certain composition. - Martijn needs to fix his internet/router/pc. - Ret disconnects after a few minutes in the start. There is a 4minute rule in place so that you can get a rematch if you disconnect. Gunrun is wondering if 4 minutes have passed. There are 3 warpgates up already, 2 immortals out as well as quite a few sentries. This would tell you instantly that ofcourse its passed 4 minutes. These are the kind of things that you should know/feel when playing/watching. - When there is little to cast at the start of a game, try to talk about certain different things the players can do. Will you see a zerg FE vs protoss? is there a chance to see some proxy? Void harass?
Adding more as i see more things that could be improved
Is it possible to update the main op to make it easier to know when stuff is going on? I only found out this was live now because I've just spent all day watching people play sc2 and vods yo
I´ve watched your stream previously and I would like to remind you to pay attention to minimap so you wont miss any drops, harass, hidden expansions etc.

A lot of commentators/broadcasters would disagree with you that there should be no music at all. However we can definitely argue about what music and how loud though. Is it the type of music that bothers you or is it too overwhelming that it drowns out game-noises/commentary? We can do some trials with no music during the games at all though.

He wasn't on his own pc and got a little startled, it's like playing sc2 with someone elses mouse/keyboard. He went into rambling mode haha. I tried to calm him down but yeah, I fully admit that was a newbie mistake on our part. You'll hopefully never hear that again.

In the context I think he meant "I'm not sure" and "I'm not sure that's a good idea". But yeah, I will force him to play offrace for a while

TOTALLY. I haven't disconnected twice in one day in the last.. 2 years or something. This is what I pulled from my router; Apr 16 19:53:41 (since last boot) KERNEL Controlled restart (after internal error or explicit system reboot) I'm totally freaked out by it and as soon as I get a chance to switch out the wiring (need 8 instead of 2 for the dsl in) I will switch to a different router. This never happens to me.

I personally was already thinking ahead because I really didn't think that Nazgul would take a disconnect win over ret. Hey, at least we knew there was a rule right?

My weakest match-up. If anyone wants to help my zerg-game I would totally take them up on the offer. I know what I'm looking for playing vs zerg and I know what to look for, but if I could offrace against someone who could give me pointers that'd be great ;p Maybe I should make thegunrun play protoss against my terribadzerg.
Thanks a lot for your comments man, this is really constructive feed back. Things we can actually use. It's much appreciated.

Thanks for the replies Martijn. I see that certain things you agree with me, and some things you don't. Thats fine, thats what opinions are for, right? .
Just a i'd like to add:
For some...odd reason, for lack of better words, it feels like the casting *value* is a bit less than i (personally) would like to see in a commentated game. Not only do I, as a viewer, want to be entertained with good games, but also informed of and even learn things that the players do. I feel that the analysis of the games is a bit "shallow". I kinda don't want to compare you to Day[9], but i feel theres a big difference in depth and in direct result "professionalism".
By "professionalism" i mean that you do have a company behind you and asking you for viewer ratings (Razer, at the Razer domination tourney), so in a sense you are working with/for them. In comparison to just a random guy sitting in his shed/loft/toilet commenting on games, you have a *name* to carry - and the more professionality (is that a word?) you can put into that name (Both GLHF.tv and customers) the better.
I (again, personally, not sure if others feel the same ofcourse) feel that the depth of the cast leaves me a little bit unsatisfied without analysis that opens up *questions* for me.
Again, i dont want to compare to Day[9], but since most of the people know his cast as well, for this example i will again. Often after a game (live games, replay casts, or even standard dailies), Sean does a short post game analysis of about 2-3 sentences. After that he asks questions to himself, and the viewers of what the player couldve done better? Since you two are two casters, you can immediately have a dialogue with different input of certain things you would've liked to have seen done, or done better.
The main reason i don't want to compare to Day[9], is that he has his own thing going with (possibly) a different audience than you do. Hence im a bit reluctant on comparing.
Either way, this was something that kinda popped into my head a few hours after the cast and i felt like it might be interesting for you to read/think about. If it isn't, then....just use this as toiletpaper

Cheers and keep up the hard work
I'll try to be very short on this and it has nothing to do with you or anything you've even heard of likely. But if anyone wants to tell me I'm "working" for anyone, I better be getting fucking paid. After all the nonsense and bs I went through with CAL & CPL, I literally twitched when you used the term "work". As much as I would love to get paid doing something I love, until I do, I am not "working" for anyone. (Anyone wondering why this pisses me off so irrationally, just google "martijn cpl gaming"). Sorry, you hit some strings there, rage aside.
That aside, I'd prefer it if you don't unify professionalism to purely the knowledge base, there's a lot more that comes with doing good commentary. I'll fully well agree day[9] is doing the better commentary. Hell, the other day I didn't put up a stream because I wanted to watch day[9]'s commentary of the match. We have admitted from the start, I'm not day[9], I don't have 10 years of competitive sc gaming. I do have 7 years of commentary experience though, a chunk of which RTS's.
You can ask me to compete with the depth of day[9]'s commentary, but that's like expecting someone that has retired from competitive sc for a long time to come back, practice a few days and beat Flash.. Ok bad example. Regardless, I know I can't compete with day[9]'s game-sense, I mean come on now. I prefer his commentary over mine too right now.
Besides, it takes a lot of confidence to criticize these players when you know that odds are, they'd demolish you. I specifically started making attempts at predicting plays, but when Nazgul popped out that immortal before the observer even though he hadn't scouted ret's tech at all on Scrap Station, all I could think was "FUCK how could I get that wrong". I was convinced he'd go observer first because it seemed completely logical and I ended up making an ass out of myself. Now maybe if Nazgul comes in and says "oh yeah, I just didn't feel like it" or something I wouldn't feel bad, but it's just a sign that I need to be careful what I say.
In commentary, you're taught that the only thing that makes you look worse than not calling something is calling something completely wrong. The Caster Curse, when a player does the exact opposite of what you called and it looks like you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
If there is one big fear I have in all this, it is that the community will just reject my casting outright if I start making claims which just don't pan out, because I get hit by the caster curse or maybe I actually do just call it wrong, either way. I know I'm pretty "hey how are you!" and happy-go-lucky but I am worried that if I make mistakes, this community will be ruthless in cutting me down. I refuse to be the next "terrible terrible damage". So maybe it's selfish, but I would like to ask for more time. I actually can read into sc2 quite well, but I would prefer to play it a little safe until I have a reputation of being an by-the-book solid sc2 caster to fall back on. I think then I can risk going for being an awesome sc2 caster.
Just going out there and saying "I predict so so and so" is too close to playing the lottery, with patches coming out so rapidly. Even if I am convinced I'm holding the winning numbers, spending my millions seems premature.
In short, I fully agree with you. Day[9]'s commentary is way more insightful and he's got a better understanding of this game. I'm totally a day[9] fan. But I can't live up to those standards yet and if I could I wouldn't have the confidence to yet. So yeah, we are going to aim for a crowd that's a little more into "sitting back, relaxing, casually enjoying some sc2, while nodding their heads to the mellow tunes softly in the background", because that's a crowd we know we can please right away. First produce something that contributes to the community, provide added value. Once we get some credibility, when people have seen us around more, when I do have more than 100 followers on twitter, I promise I will go for the broadcasting gold. I'm coming for you Sean Plott, slowly but surely, I'M COMING FOR YOU!
Right now that just seems arrogant. I'd like people to believe that I know my place until I've earned a better one.
Semi-related, what did you think of my post here; http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=119166¤tpage=14 talking about the matches? It was kind of a trial to see what I could come up with to paint a more interesting and exciting picture for upcoming matches. Do you think something like that would suit the broadcast?
PS. Sorry, I know I type too much. Edit2. Fuck it, I'll just link it, this drama was back when I was on operations staff for CAL, overseeing wc3 and dota after doing years of "work" for them. http://www.gotfrag.com/portal/story/41540/
Its good to see that I am not the only one who complains about the music. Maurice Ravel's most famous composition is the Bolero, BUT he himself did NOT consider it to be music because it is just a repetition of a theme 16 time in increasing intensity. I feel the same about all the electronic garbage stuff which The Gunrun loves so much apparently. Thats obviously my personal opinion, but it is the reason why I wont be watching your channel and if you claim to be professionals in your mindset it hopefully makes you think a bit more about these complaints. Awesome visual stream quality is not the only thing which makes up a good stream; knowledgable commentators, good camera movement and non-offensive (at least) sounds are another part.
Some people cant live without constant background music like in a mall or wherever (luckily thats not so common over here in Germany yet), but many people only want to focus on the game and the music is severely distracting, even on a very low volume.
Oh and do you really think a discussion about Pokemon is the right thing to fill out some time?
Well you can't please everyone. Regardless of what music you play (even none at all), someone's going to be irked. Saying you won't watch at all because of it seems a bit out there. You're sure that's not a bit of a knee-jerk reflex? An ultimatum as in "my way or no way"? I promise we'll have regular discussions on how loud the music is and try some matches without it. If it's his playlist that troubles you and from the sound of it, it's the occasional k-pop, what sounds would you consider non-offensive? What could we do to reach a compromise between your stance and the people that do want a better produced broadcast? Ingame music? That's what the Koreans go for, would that suit you better?
As for pokemon, I don't know wtf that was about either. I'm pretty sure I didn't get into it or encourage it, so it can't have lasted too long.
Hey martijn, i dont mind reading long well written posts . Makes my day the more interesting.
First of all, i didnt want to push your button at all with the "working for/working with" thing :p. Remember, SC community are BFF! (best friends forever!)
Not much to comment on your post from my side that is. You explained what you want to do with your cast, and where you think you are, and where you hope to end up. Thats great - always good to set goals for the things you do. I like your activeness in this thread to, it shows you care in feedback.
I really like the post you made in that thread (the one you linked). That kind of stuff i think is quite good to bring up in the cast. It can kill downtime between matches, and it can spark up a bit of a discussion between the hosts, and the people in the chat too.
Just keep up the good, hard work. Put in the hours, and you'll get where u want to get

So you are saying that people arent watching the stream for the game but for the music? If Day[9] would play music during the show he would get more viewers still? Just stick to the music between games like Day[9] does. That seems a decent compromise, does it not? You also dont need to talk about Pokemon either to fill the gap.
On April 17 2010 16:27 Martijn wrote: Saying you won't watch at all because of it seems a bit out there.
Not if your (mine) acceptance for electronic music is nonexistant. Also: Are the great commentators on TV for your favorite sports playing music in the background? I dont think so ...
I listen to a radio station without a heavy rotation. Maybe that raised my expectances too much, but you have to admit that stuff like K-pop and Pokemon are pretty much covering niches which polarize the listeners / viewers drastically. You either love it or absolutely hate it. Avoiding any such conflict by playing no music at all - most of us are not hearing music the whole day - seems to be a good enough compromise since we all can put on our own favorite music in our own room. Doesnt this make sense? The music is a sideshow and much much much much less important than the actual game and the commentary and if I turn off the sound I cant hear the commentary (which could use improvement, but thats another issue). Even on a low volume an annoying music will still "zap your concentration" and you start focusing too much on it instead of the game.

At least there is hope.
I will still give you guys a chance and occasionally zap in, but once I hear music during a game I will stop watching.

The pokemon comment went on for maybe 20 seconds? I don't actually even remember what exactly was said to be quite honest. To me it seems like you're being a bit harsh, criticising a random on the side comment so harshly but maybe I'm not looking at it objectively.
And no I don't think we get viewers by playing DJ, but I do think we get viewers by offering a level of production quality that no one else has right now. I don't have anywhere near the convidence in to go up against day[9]s commentary right now, I have watched all the vod's on his channel, every single one, to learn more about specificly commentating sc/sc2. Some a few times over. But we do have a level of production quality that he could learn from us as well. If we didn't have that higher production quality, I don't think many people would watch at all.
On April 17 2010 20:03 Rabiator wrote: Not if your (mine) acceptance for electronic music is nonexistant. Also: Are the great commentators on TV for your favorite sports playing music in the background? I dont think so ...
Try to find an OSL/MSL recording without sc music in the background though. I realize you might be used to a lot of streamers not having any music while casting, so it seems awkward, but that's mostly because a lot of streamers aren't anywhere near TV-level production. As someone with a lot of experience, I know that there should be some kind of background audio. If it's impossible to find balanced music that people can stand, then ingame music. But I'm 100% convinced "something" should be there.

This is hard for me to comment on because when I'm casting I can't hear the music at all on my end, only thegunrun can. If you could tell me what music you would find "not annoying" that would be a great help. I can tell you, though we're willing to experiment with no music at all, more than likely in the end there will "something" there. I completely agree with you that the music should never be a focus point, and clearly it's too much right now, so we will tone it down considerably.
Did he actually play the pokemon theme or something? Oi.. He was broadcasting from a different pc and didn't have his music collection if that's any excuse. Feel free to tell him off in chat next time he pulls a stunt like that ;p
What I'm sort of missing with your post is a direction to take. Turning off any music what-so-ever is unprofessional and decreases the production quality of the broadcast. Obviously the current music is way too overwhelming if it bothers our audience this much. So where do I go? Would in-game music on low be acceptable? We've identified a clear problem, but keeping in mind that no music at all is poor, what would you suggest?

Haha, well I'm glad I managed to provide some entertainment. The CAL/CPL nonsense is one of eSports biggest dramafests. I adminned tournaments for CPL at events and was a member of CALs operations staff at peak overseeing more than half of all their games. Spent 4+ years there without getting paid anything. Then they threatened to "fire" everyone.. While they were volunteers.
When it comes to feedback I always remind myself I'm not doing this for myself as an individual, but I'm trying to present something that adds value to the community. So if people don't like certain things, I should always look for a workable compromise. To put it bluntly, if people don't tune in and like it, what's the point? It is impossible to please some people, but the people that care enough to provide feedback in most cases show that they care enough to write a post about it. So they're at least hoping for the best and trying to help us improve.
tbh, i dont think i'd personally mind ingame music at all really. iirc, a lot of the sc1 korean commentators use it as background music. Come to think of it...i can't think of a genre that i would personally put in the background of a cast. Metal/rap/techno(incl all its electronic variations) is too much. Pop/rock would be the only thing that could be a bit more "appropriate" but... I don't know what i'd think when i hear bruce springsteen/rolling stones in the background .

I would totally cast to some paint it, black! Haha. I think it'd be hard to balance that though, rather, we can definitely give the ingame music a try!

The stream is considerably higher quality than say most livestream channels. If you are experiencing lag, make sure you don't have torrents going, downloads, active skype calls, whatever might limit your connection. Also if you're on dial-up, well there's not much we can do. We're at 6.5k viewers and if your connection is ok, it should be smooth. Of course, we don't have this many viewers every day. So if we do run into issues, I apologize beforehand. This was not planned. It should definitely be better for the majority out there right now though.
7 k viewers and it runs soo smoothly, wow. Really like it so far, will for sure check it out more often! And thanks for the work you guys are putting into providing more "airtime" for SC2!
for the people that are lagging too much to watch live. Please be careful, I don't have time to make "fake" links yet so the number of games may spoil it for you. + Show Spoiler +

Excellent games! REALLY enjoyed them. Thanks so much to all of you for having this set up. Over 9000 viewers ftw.
Nice commentating from Day[9] and Chill as always. Funny blip in there with Chill being left out of a game. Hope to see some more awesome stuff coming around soon.
Very very good show, mixing the epic commentary form Chill and day9, with the epic knowledge of streaming and just general awesomeness that is thegunrun, oh and Martjin, who ive never herd of :D
is it possible to get the replays for these games?

I cast on glhf.tv all the time tyvm. Time to check us out more
That said, over 9000 viewers was a huge success for us. Even though it was completely due to day[9], chill, kennigit and the TL and EG players. We owe them.
On April 18 2010 09:30 Mykill wrote: thanks a lot for the stream today!!!
Once again. I feel we totally owe day[9] and chill. We just did only half the work that we usually do and got 10-20x the viewers we usually do because of them.
Loved the stream, very crisp and much easier to see than livestream. Thank you so much for hosting todays events!
Btw went and listened to some of your guys commentary. It isnt bad at all, sure you have to get more familiar but thats no big deal if your actively working at it.
In reading some of the comments/nit picks people post here, I wouldn't even bother replying to half of them. Do your thing, keep at it and improving, ignore the whine-posts. Most honestly aren't constructive.
Such a beautiful stream! Seriously probably the best quality i've seen. Thank you so much for casting those set of games. Besides the TSL2, probably my most favorite set of games to watch. Game 2 jinro vs inka left me speechless. I will be looking forward to more streams hosted by glhf.tv in the future for sure!
Man you guys are awesome, thanks a lot for the kind words. It's such a twisted feeling. I feel bad for Sean that livestream is giving him such trouble, but at the same time I'm so happy we could be a part of that.
That said, the epitome of delivering an extremely high quality production has got to be even being able to satisfy those people that are harsh and unforgiving. So I'm willing to discuss anything with anyone if it has a chance of increasing the overal quality.
Also thanks for using ustream. Aside from typically better quality it seems to never have the full screen crash problems that I get with livestream / blip while using Chrome.
We appreciate the support, we´ve been getting the tag "livestream haters" lately. I hope today a number of people saw where we we´re coming from when we criticize livestream. I personally hope more people follow suit now that they've seen just what is possible with the right tools, so the community as a whole benifits.
After seeing the quality of this and PysonicReavers JustinTV stream why does anyone use livestream? Is it easier to set up or something becasue the quality is definitely sub par by far.
This might suck to hear, but it may be the fact that you're from El Salvador and as much as we'd like to oblige everyone, we're going to have to go with the service that works best for most people. Meanwhile we will stay away from JustinTV so our European viewers don't get screwed, having to buy premium accounts to watch the stream.
For the other post, not to bunch you all up in one, but thanks very much for the kind words. It's really encouraging to see this much positive feedback. We hope to keep producing high quality content for everyone. Meanwhile improving our commentary over time.
There has been a lot of discussion about using music in streams. I was thinking this issue and different sound channels in any stream can be divided into three sections: game sounds, commentator speech, music. Some streams have all three, some have one or two of those.
Since we live in digital age and everyone is using their own pc to watch streams and VoDs, it would be awesome if there was button that would allow spectator to choose between those three channels. In practice, it could be that volume/mute button that just has couple more options to choose from. For example, if I wanted to watch stream without music I could choose option that allows me to hear game sounds and commenting.
I'm novice with streaming technology, so forgive me if it's even possible. It might be with given tools, but I think some programmer could make it work. This is an idea, not specifically directed to you glhf.tv, but I think if it could be implemented, you would benefit as well.
As usual for me, this is just an idea to think about and unfortunately I can't provide any direct solution since this type of technology is beyond my expertise.
On April 16 2010 23:06 Necrosjef wrote: Good coverage by these guys. Top marks for that.
I wasn't accusing you guys of not knowing this. That was merely an example. But its not just what you know its also what you say, its one thing sitting there thinking "yeah we are gonna see mass zealots" but if you don't mention it then you may aswell not know it .
I do like your stream though because the quality is good and you guys are fun. Keep up the good work.
Good job on the stream and VODs, as someone said "the more commentaries the better". While you might not know the game as well Day[9] that doens't mean you can't make awesome commentaries. Take CholeraSC f.ex., I dont think anyone would argue he knew as much about BW as Day[9], but he really did alot for BW commentaries, and if you need a current example, I think Rise is still doing some super entertaining commentaries.
As you have already shown, you don't need to compete with Day[9], working together (as you have already done) is so much better for the community.
BUT - you need to really start working on watching the minimap... I've seen a few games where there huge engagements that are completely missed even when they are blatant on the mini map.
Thank you for covering Zotac Cup #8. You guys are easy to listen, funny, have some decent knowledge of SC2 and thing I enjoyed most, music choice... it's just too awesome! Keep it rockin'
I know it's their stream and they can play whatever they like but their music selection really does turn viewers off.
If you took the demographic Blizzard are aiming for with SC2 and compared it to the target audience of artists like Usher and Rihanna I'm fairly certain you'd see a stark contrast.
You almost get the impression their music selection is made with the sole purpose of pissing their audience off.

Yeah, with time, I'll get more confidence in my predictions and even when I do get it wrong, once we are a bit more established we won't get gunned down for every mistake and feel we can cast more loosely! I'm all over it.
Minimap observing was really, really, bad. Commentary is pretty good, but it's really frustrating when you can't see when expansions are being destroyed. I think there was at least 3 times in Strelok vs Zpux where we missed expansions being destroyed.

I'm sorry, I'm not casting today so I can't really comment on how things are today, only just got home recently. I'll pass it on.
I'm not sure if this a recurring problem for anyone else, but I'm from the UK here and it seems the more people are watching, the more stuttering I get and the screen fades faster to black. It's been impossible to watch either the Saturday's clan war or today's ZOTAC coverage, yet the Stars War coverage when only 800 people were watching ran absolutely perfectly.
I don't know if this has to do with the fact I'm watching from the UK, but it would be a shame to miss out on the big events and have to watch them as VODs instead. Hope this feedback helps, keep up the awesome work.

US here; had no problems yesterday even as stream pushed 9k. But today stream has been much laggier and it goes dark periodically. Don't know what's up, maybe it's me.
Just noted a fair bit more lag on this stream than the 9k one. Which is just weird, considering this one pulled in about 2k viewers. I dont know if many others felt this as well?

We need to contact ustream support regardless, so we'll try to make a note of that too.
Info from TLO vs LucifroNNNNN 24 workers on 8 patches is maximum saturation. 16 workers on 8 patches is maximum efficiency before it starts declining TLO had 24 workers in the main and like 4 at the natural so he was losing a lot of money. In general, if you ever are getting more than 2 drones per mineral patch as zerg, you should have an expansion coming to transfer.

So far, this is the best service there is. It may be a routing problem. Can you watch other high quality streams? I stress high quality because for example livestream doesn't cut it.
Just wanna say thanks, the stream is VERY entertaining with its great quality and your commentation. The popularity will explode as the game is released. So thanks, you are pioneers, and you do a lot for those who dont have keys yet.

That's a bit harshly put, but in essence, it really could be bad routing between your isp and ustream which we can't influence. We recently found that streaming with chrome for some reason "unlags" some users, maybe trying a different browser on your end will work better for you.
Updated the original post with more background information. Meanwhile, we're going to try to get in on some coverage of US CraftCup tonight, as well as potential Razer Domination matches. I'll let everyone know what's what as soon as we know more about tonights schedule.

I can't watch this embed on tl, it says that I have to watch it on ustream, which is ok but on ustream it is so small compared to the embed version on tl. Am I missing a expand button or something?
We've been pulling so many viewers that our embed link got locked. Right now most of ustream staff is over at the facebook conference, so once they get back in to gear it'll hopefully be resolved.
Hey i just noticed that often the glhf stream is listed as live in the TL stream sidebar even when it is not. Don't know if it's a problem on your end or TL's end, but someone should look into it!
Great streams by the way. Love the high quality and smoothness of your stream.

On April 26 2010 10:10 PanzerDragoon wrote: Is there really any benefit to continuing to use Livestream for large events?
From the GLHF.tv perspective, absolutely not. Livestream is great if you're streaming your random games to 20-100 people and it's really easy to use. Anything major it just crumbles.
But we have been called "the livestream haters" before, so maybe we're biased. They ARE working with the community and trying to improve their service, so maybe in the future this will change.
Even 1000-2000 viewers isn't too much. After 2000 you have to start clearing chat constantly. After 5000 you're pushing it, and after 7000 you seemingly will always have problems.
ustream on the other hand, chat never fails and the stream mostly stays up if the host is ok. Sometimes the website wonks out and won't load the stream for a few individuals but that's all I've seen.
If there's 2000 people in your livestream channel and you reconnect at any point, you can forget about throwing your stream live again apparently. Fears like that at least don't exist with ustream.
Of course on the other hand we Are still waiting for them to fix our embed link.
I had a great Starcraft Sunday yesterday. Thanks HD & Husky; despite the problems, it was fun to watch. Also thanks to thegunrun & GLHF.tv (also Day[9]).
From what day9 said, I take it that the issue with LiveStream is when you have thousands of viewers, going offline then going back online will cause major issues. I guess Ustream has a different architecture, or since GLHF.tv is online 24/7 they don't have the same problem.
Major props for GLHF & thegunrun for being very professional with the setup. The image overlay was great. I didn't even notice they prepared fake Game 3 files sometimes since I intentionally look away from the screen when they load the replays. Playing music during intermissions is also great. These little things really help with the overall audience experience. GLHF.tv is a great host. Maybe one thing to suggest is to add some overlay text/image that says "x Minutes Intermission - Next game: aaa vs bbb". That will help people who joined in the middle of the intermission period.
I love when the community works together like this. Let people do what they are best at. GLHF at hosting and streaming, HD & Husky at commentating, and Day[9] at being awesome .
Fun fact, aside from streaming awesome quality video, as it turns out, we're also good at theft.
A few broken windows at Blizzard HQ later, rumor has it we've obtained a significant number of beta keys. If such were the case, maybe you can persuade us to share. For starters, one might suggest heading over and liking the official GLHF.tv facebook page over at http://tinyurl.com/glhftv to find out more. Ssshhhh.
I really liked Orb and dApollo co-casting in the Zotac games. Really showed them having extensive knowledge of the game and that made it great listening to their cast!
hey guys. Do you have some problems recently? You were my go to place for the Razer Tourney covarage, and you've missed two games of the ro8 now Hope you manage to cast the other two. Nothing but love for glhf <3
I've been over in Copenhagen the last few days doing some cod4 commentary for a televised event there, so I'm not up to speed. As I understand it, the stream is dead because of technical issues on ustreams side right now. So we're on hold. We at least know they're working on it.
its amazing how somebody can have this kind of taste in music and shamelessly (!) plays it over the internets with like 5k+ people listening. im impressed, man! that takes some guts... :D
We were told we're getting some priority bandwidth love soon from ustream, so much props to them and hopefully the lag will be resolved in the near future.

Yes the glhf.tv stream improved and stopped lagging, but ustream is really starting to lag on ALL the streams.
Maybe it is because all the streamers changing from livestream to ustream. I don't even want to know how much bandwith they would need if a stream is around 1000kbit..
125KB/s upload that should be a bandwith massacre with 10K people on one stream.
Day[9] stepped up and is going to cast the Razer Finals instead. To avoid unneeded spectator lag, we won't be on, check out his ustream channel for the finals.

Hey guys, sorry about the lag :/ Ustream.tv has been having some issues streaming to certain parts of the world. Hopefully this will be alleviated in due time.
About the volume levels it did seem that I was potted a little to high, we'll be sure to do a better sound check for the next stream.
Thanks for all the feedback guys and keep posting, we really are trying to the make the stream better and more entertaining.
Sorry if I did go too far with the comments, hope none was taken too personally. It's all in good fun
As always, we're open to your feedback!

Nah, Day[9] wanted to cast and we just decided to avoid creating any more spectator lag than necessary because of the large numbers of streams.
On May 10 2010 05:01 Zurope wrote: I think you guys have the best quality stream. Really enjoyed watching it the other day.
Thanks, we try.
Meanwhile, for the people complaining about lag, we're trying to setup a separate lower quality stream. Like a dual feed so the people that do get poor routing to ustream can still get a good experience. So we just wanted you to know we do realize some people have issues and we're trying to resolve them, but obviously that's going to take some money and time. If you want to speed up the process, by all means go to glhf.tv and donate or please be patient and wait for us to work these issues out.
I think Martijn and Gunrun have developed a good chemistry that makes GLHF.tv one of my favorite streams of SC2. Day[9] is awesome during solo commentary in terms of showing us what's going on, but when you put him with djWheat or itmeJP it becomes a good form of entertainment as well as information. I think watching the TLI yesterday with djWheat and Day[9] and Chill, there were times when the gap between games was almost more entertainment than the games themselves.
That's what GunRun and Martijn have going on. Martijn as a deeply knowledgeable play-by-play guy and TheGunRun is the color commentator helping make the whole thing enjoyable to listen to (not only with his epic playlist).
Plus you guys always cast the European tournaments during the weekdays and that gives me something to do during work.
PS : As for the lag, there's a noticeable improvement in the lag since GunRun got his new motherboard. Which is good, you could sense the pain in his voice every time his computer seized up during a match and he had to crash his SC2 client. I think anyone else having issues are just having those problems due to the bitrate being higher? It definitely hasn't seemed like lag for me, at least, not like it was a couple weeks ago.
PS2 : And as for the comments. I think people were knocking you for things like over-emphasizing disgust over things like maynarding drones through a battle causing them to die, or letting the charge fall off of a void ray instead of rolling it to another building. I didn't think it went too far. I don't think it was harsh at all. I like the increased passion. We were joking in chat about Hulk Gunrun and things like that. I don't think you guys need to change anything. Clearly you don't mean any disrespect and you give these guys all the credit in the world. But even the best pros with uber micro/macro can't be everywhere at once and make boneheaded mistakes during a game, sometimes even when it costs them everything.
GLHF.tv will be streaming and even have the lady these 2 fine gents are fighting over herself on skype for live reactions. In one corner we've got Pholon the legendary lord of liquipedia trying to banish the mischievous maiden for her wrongdoings. In the other corner, we've got Zealot zealously standing up for his partner and defending her honor and freedom of speech.
Will Lord Pholon be able to restore peace to the lands of #teamliquid IRC for 7 days and 7 nights? Will Pholons justice be brought down upon us all? Will the noble knight Zealot be able to defend her honor? Or will he perish on his on sword? Is Miss Suna a damsel in distress or a wicked wench in disguise? Drama, trolling, a woman to fight over. This grudgematch has it all, tune in tonight, 9pm cest, 3 pm est on http://www.glhf.tv!
TheGunRun - I want you to know that I credit you with my currently claimed beta nomicker - BarraxObama. Martijn - You and Gretorp are why I chose to main Terran.
Lag is really strange for me on GunRun's stream. I have absolutely no issues with watching any other stream but the lag on Guns has a pattern. Firstly a frame flashes up on the screen that isn't relevant to current video stream (I think it's from either the start of the broadcast, earlier in the stream or from the last broadcast - for example today it has been the Command and Conquer 3 menu screen, the other day it was Korean SC commentators) then a few seconds pass and the stream is normal, I then get a freeze with a buffering icon for a few seconds, a freeze with no buffer, the game then comes back for a few seconds, then another buffering icon freeze and finally the irrelevant frame pops back up again for a split second and the stream continues as if nothing happened. This happens periodically, maybe every 2 minutes, and is always the same. Really strange. I used to be able to watch the stream with no lag but for the past few weeks it's been like this.
Thank you guys for the streaming! I appreciate being able to throw it on in the background at work (when you're on during my work hours). Listening to commentary helps me get through some of the monotony in my every day!
On May 26 2010 13:53 Martijn wrote: That's really awkward, we'll look into it.
It doesn't happen all the time, but I get the same issue if the stream "stutters". Anytime the spinning wheel of death pops up, you do get a "dummy" frame, which I assume might be the first frame from when the stream was turned on that would later become the "label" of the VoD for UStream.
Also we are still in the midst of testing our new higher quality streaming tech, so if you do suffer from stream viewing issues please post as much as you can about how you're viewing us.
Do you use your calendar on GLHF.tv or is that some relic from the old times? I also noticed that last update of this thread OP is over month old.
How I could be more aware of your programs and broadcasts. For example now I found that you are casting lots of stuff but following their schedule is very hard. It's also very slow and prone to errors if one has to read all posts in this thread.
With the beta having been down, we haven't had any regular coverage. Sorry for the inconvenience as things get settled, we'll populate the calendar properly again soon. The calendar is definitely the way to go seeming we can't influence TL's calendar.
Hey guys, I'm really sorry about the dead air for the last finals game. During game 3 of the grand finals our ustream broadcaster page would no longer correctly do vods so we tried a quick restart (Match 4 was starting). This led to us having a black screen error and being unable to establish connection with my screen capture encoder and ustream until much after the games concluded.
Keep in mind, this won't be near as "epic" as the version including the crowd reactions if day9 ever gets that uploaded. This is purely for the people that have asked for the link so they can review the segment because they found it informative. I actually wrote a 5 page paper on the subject of starcraft 2 path planning issues, which this segment was based on. However, the paper is targeted at video game developers and not players. Regardless, if anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to answer them to the best of my abilities and will upload the paper if people show interest in reading it.
Please note, I did make a minor mistake during the video. I stated the destructible rocks were "down" where I meant it as them being "down in place" rather than "down" as in destroyed which is obvious from the video. My apologies for this ambiguity.
Great news for people that have been suffering from lag. We're just a few tests away from getting an alternative relay available to you. A lower bitrate mirror will be available shortly!
He plays Zerg... are you kidding? It's pro Zerg not anti-Huk. And every caster out there is biased..
If anything I would be more annoyed with the commentary about how dimagas build was actually viable despite the fact he won because of Huk's massive walling mistake.

Talk about bias.
I have nothing against Huk, I think Huk's an amazing player, but I really didn't approve of his simcity/build that map and that makes it my job to note. If I see a protoss FE like that after forge, I'm going to say that it's extremely weak against nydus play. However, we did that game, so I was happy it turned out that way because it was textbook play. Any zerg player could've learned a ton from that. Huk's a top5 protoss in the world at least, counting the Koreans.
As a caster, you have to be critical of plays you see too, it's part of the job. Also, I'm a Random player since several patches before beta phase 1 ended and I mained Terran before then. Perhaps I was too critical, but it had nothing to do with the player, it was purely because I didn't like the build/play. Thanks for the feedback though, I'll try to get hung up on things like 4gate's less.

Really enjoying all content by GLHF.tv, a bonus is that it's not at 3am (European) so I can go to sleep at normal hours. Good casting and stream quality throughout, keep it up guys. No complaints at all on my end, which I can't say for every stream.

Octoshape is designed to mess with the AdBlock and since the ESL is paid by revenues from ads they want it badly.
I even had it screw with my sounds by playing the sounds of ads on a stream where I had turned off the sound and which was running in the background! It happened only once, but I think they might try to abuse a bug / feature like this to make themselves more appealing. Obviously I HATE that program with a passion, because it ruins my choice.
Octoshape is evil to the core, but; IEM stream with Octoshape>no IEM stream.
Fyi, I got to meet "a fan" sort of, how awesome is that. Came out of nowhere and recognized me and everything. Oh and LLL's owner came up to me and was like "so, I hear you're the best shoutcaster in Benelux". Ego boost++, next time, I'm going for Europe as a whole. YES I'M LOOKING AT YOU REDEYE.
Funniest moment of IEM so far; walking up to DeMusliM in the IEM hall (audio is reaallly fucking loud). "HI I'M MARTIJN FROM GLHF", "SORRY I ONLY SPEAK ENGLISH".
Don't worry, few more days in Cologne and I'll be back to making your internets unsafe with awesome streaming goodness. I actually one-upped several of day9's calls today, much to my own shock, good times. Next event they should put me up there too.

Nice, you can ask for help without being an ass. You just made yourself out to be retarded because this has been answered multiple times on these forums.
Presuming you use Firefox: 1) Disable noscript and adblock 2) Restart Firefox 3) Tada!
Disabling them for one page isn't enough, you have to 100% disable the addons. It seems some people have it working with adblock, but I couldn't. What I ended up doing though
1) Install Chrome
I just use Chrome for anything Octoshape related now, less hassle.
On August 21 2010 16:46 SUpak wrote: Is this stream for real? All I get are commercials, commercial, and more commercials. Just remove this crap of a stream from site jeez, time wasters.
i'm sorry, but that's not really fair. To summarize, the ads you were seeing were ESL's, not GLHF's. If the stream is live and you only get ads, it's because you're blocking octoshape in some fashion. Octoshape is required by ESL as part of the agreement to even be allowed to broadcast their events. We normally never use octoshape and we'll get rid of it asap.
"Day 1 & 2's VODs are now up!" you say. Ok - I'm prolly missing something here, but where is the game between Morrow and Artosis, Huk v Artosis? It says here you're covering those games: http://www.esl-world.net/masters/season5/gamescom/schedule but they are nowhere to be found on your blip.tv-channel.
Also, why does it say "QuakeLive" in many of the titles of the SC2-games?
Edit: I've been told, that ESL haven't been too generous when it comes to information and organization with GLHF.tv. I'm guessing that's part of it.
Basically, on day 1 of the event in the morning, there was no internet. No internet meant no matches and as such quakelive was delayed and had to be played at the same time as starcraft2. This meant that one stream had to focus on quake and the other on sc2. ESL thought sc2 would get more viewers, so they kept that for their own stream/the event projector+audio and GLHF had to do the quakelive matches. Was ESL's decision forced by the technical difficulties. Therefor we only got to cover 1 sc2 match instead of the ones we were scheduled to. Furthermore, ESL cut coverage on GLHF short several times if ESL's match ended quickly to stream the GLHF match on their stream instead.

Thank you. I feel I work best doing color commentary with someone doing play-by-play. I can do play-by-play, but the amount of insight I bring then seems to decrease a lot.
My screen also stays white, and when I try to follow the link to Ustream, it seems as if their site is gone. Instead of the usual ustream.tv site, it comes up with a place holder site that offers links to streaming tv and video online, but none of them go to ustream.
I'm afraid the white-screen issues were a ustream issue some people suffered from. DNS problems indeed. Thankfully, they should be resolved assuming your isp updates the dns at a decent interval.
Is anybody watching the CraftCup right now? This is terrible. Fuzer is one of the most BM players I've seen in the 2 series I've watched today. While not being the most definitive show of manner, Fuzer proxy raxxed and tried to delay games as much as possible, even beating out Tarson with a lesser force just by flying his building away. *Sigh*.

EDIT: Directed towards Wunder, I agree with Vimsey
I don't see how you can think that Fuzer was BM in any way. This is a competitve game where the main goal is to win, and there's money on the line, of course Fuzer (in a base race) is going to do everything in his power to win.
Don't confuse Bad manner with alternative playstyles, just because Fuzer plays unique and aggressive doesn't mean in anyway that he's bm. In fact, if anyone noticed, he always gg:ed and said well played in our games, and he even thanked me for the series in game 3 and left when he realized that he was dead.

GunRun, I noticed you use the default chat client for UStream. For casting, I would imagine using an IRC client would make your life easier. If you use firefox, ChatZilla is an excellent plug-in. Otherwise you can use mIRC or X-Chat.
Assuming you aren't logged into chat via. the ustream page, load up your iRC client. type /server c.ustream.tv then press enter. Once connected, type /nick (your ustream account name) then enter. Type /pass (your ustream password) then enter. Finally, type /join #thegunrun and press enter.
Not meaning to abuse the years and years of finetuning the stream, but how do they achieve such superb quality? I reckon theres no guide on how do it like that, but it would be very interesting to know
Mostly, but not only, because they're using Ustream and not that shity (sorry about that, but it's true) LiveStream. Most people don't use ustream because it takes a little time to set everything up, and livestream makes it easier. But TL has a guide for ustream use
Not sure when it started, but what's with the constantly switching player views? The only time I want to know what one player sees is for scouting. Seems like all day today the view is constantly being toggled back and forth, from player 1 to player 2 to Everyone. It's really distracting, because most of the time player view is irrelevant.
Kudos to you guys for being willing to leave when the games were lagging. Even though it turned out to never be you guys causing the lag, I appreciate a caster who doesn't play the "it can't be me" card. More casters need to be able to admit that everyone, including them, are capable of lagging, and that the game quality matters more than the casting.

You hear a LOT of "OOOH" 'OH!" and "AAHHH" from him, instead of words and thoughts. I know you're trying to convey the feelings/emotions you're feeling, using this as punctuation, but it is counterproductive to do so. The best way to convey feeling/emotion is the subtle changes in the inflection of your voice, the cadence of your speaking, and your choice of words.
The easiest way to think of it is this: Imagine what it would look like if you were speaking into a Speech-to-text program, and it was typing out EVERYTHINg you said, noises included, and the text was then posted under your VOD as it was running (like closed captioning).
Also, try to speak ness nasally (I know, it's damn near impossible to change how you're used to speaking) when you slow down your words. I noticed that your voice gets very nasal when you slow down. A way to practice this is try talking slow as if you were casting, and conciously force your adam's apple downward while speaking. (don't do this while casting though, as you'll get some interesting crackles. It's meant as an exercise and practice)

Yes, well, how about instead you just don't tune in period, thank you. Though I don't know the specifics of what you're talking about, the amount of tournaments we're asked to cover is so big we can't always have our best people on every single match. Regardless we try to offer the community the best we can. Everyone makes mistakes, especially during the long 8 hour sessions we some times make.
At one end you have the likes of supermarket and elevator music, which nobody can tolerate and at the other end of the spectrum you have something like classical music which most people can at least tolerate..
There's an entirely different outer ring of hell that exists.. crappy bad nerd 90's music, fatboy slim, etc - flogged and beaten to death day in day out on every radio and tv ad - and this is the music these guys play on their stream... jesus christ guys.. for the love of god.. change the music to something else..
disclaimer: its your stream, your choice, but seriously.. the music is hideous.. there is different taste in music and then there is just plain bad taste.

So you want us to play music that is neither old or new and that isn't popular? We always take suggestions, so you're free to make some. Except if it's metal, if it's metal or anything that just involves a bunch of screaming, go slit your wrists. Otherwise, quite open to suggestions.

What if it's metal that doesn't involve a bunch of screaming? :p
This is definately one of the best streams on TL - keep up the good work! Enjoying both your SC2-related streams as well as the non-sc2-related ones you've thrown in every now and again.
Don't worry about what the naysayers say about your music, the mix of game-stuff, cartoon themes and electronic-based music is all good. There's enough streams with generic pop and metal already.
Thx for the games you guys stream, always high level stuff, but just to offer some constructive criticism here.. Please try and offer critical commentary, as in try to get into players' heads. I don't know what's the point of shoutcasting when all you do is comment on what we can already see on the screen.
lol someone's going to complain about the music no matter what you play, so just play whatever you like. It's important to remember the difference between improving the stream and catering to random people.
OK, you guys just put a gigantic smile on my face when i tuned in and saw this: Excellent work TheGunrun! Lag the hell out of this game EDIT: and now you're massing changelings :D
I dont want to be rude, but the commentator should improve their camera control. When I watch the America vs EU, the commentator keep shaking camera between places.
He should know watching replay by yourself and casting have different camera movement. And sometime I felt they can improve their knowledge of the game.

The girl co caster today is of excellent SC knowledge
She talks about metagime (as in mental aspect) and what the two players are doing to possibly trick eachother, leading to different builds, ect. Which is a nice break from the usual casters only stating whats happening on screen at the time. She seems to understand that we have EYES..

Your commentary was good - your knowledge of the game is up to the task but if you want to improve I'll offer my two bits of (hopefully) constructive criticism.
Voice - casting is all about voice, intonation, and delivery.
I'm not sure if you are familiar with the two gender archetypes of voice, but you can generally classify speech as somewhere on the spectrum between male and female styles of speaking. To be clear, of course, not all men speak in a masculine style and not all women speak in a feminine style. They're called that because there is a measurable gender bias in the distribution, but it's certainly not a dividing wall.
Point being that feminine style speech is defined by softness, rising inflections, attention to feelings, and a number of other characteristics. Masculine style speech is defined by falling tones, firmness, matter-of-fact delivery, and is task oriented.
Here is a great article by a female lawyer on the topic - the courtroom being one of those areas where a masculine style of speech, while not **always** the best choice, is absolutely needed in a lot of circumstances.
What am I getting at?
For e-sports casting in a game like starcraft - a high paced, competitive, rule-based game - knowing what you are talking about is only half the battle. You can know what you are talking about but also sound like you don't know what you are talking about even if what you are saying makes perfect sense.
If you are going to cast and want to get better, I would say that studying and working on adopting the masuculine voice for your delivery should be a goal. Everything you say should be bold, firm, and matter-of-fact. Say it like you're certain of it without describing how you feel certain. Even when you don't know something or aren't sure, say in a way that sounds like you are certain you are not sure. Rising inflections, in particular, give the impression that you are not sure about what you are saying and that you are throwing the statement out for your co-caster as a "maybe?" which you are hoping they're going to back you up on.
Really, this advice goes for all casters - guys and girls alike. A lot of guys don't do this right either so it's not really a guy/girl thing (like I was saying before).
For something freaky....skip to 00:50 to bypass the opening ramble.

I dont mind them, they dont have the intensity of other casters, but then again this kind of long drawn event doesnt need 12 hrs of screaming in my opinion. Hoping they change their pace for the final rounds in the playoff tho, as the Ro8 and onwards certainly should be casted with more energy.
Will be disappointed if they cast the final in the same monotone way tho.
well i like martijn and his co - very much so at the moment - and its very professional - thx btw to beard for great producing its appreciatet - and i as a caster know that its quite a thing to set everything up
No issues with the casters and enjoy the fact that theres noone screaming at my ears everytime a unit dies.
I enjoy GLHF 1 team but must congratulate GunRun and Eleine on GLHF 2 for having such a calm and balanced posture.
I never look for deep strategic insights when watching live casts, just want the caster to provide some dynamics to the events and help us enjoying the matches while statting some facts, and thats being achieved.
Stream 1 both casters got dropped after people waited 30+ min for the next game.
I feel bad for them, they look absolutely tired and half dead and people watching this are already on the edge of just shutting the thing down because of the numerous delays and now this.
I felt bad for them last night (it was night for me atleast here in Norway). They had a long day with lots of postpones and errors, and they really did their best, I think maybe I've been spoilt with Tastosis and Day9 among others, not really giving them the cudos for their efforts that they deserve. Hope today will prove to be errorless and that they have their energy back
GLHF #2 is sooo much better than GLHF #1 at this event.. Like, by far
Gunrun <3 - Also, the girl on there (I dont remember her name) actually really knows the game well, just annoying that she is chewing bubblegum on air :S
I stopped following Assembly after TB left. #1 stream was very bad, #2 was good but they didn't cast many games. I really liked the girl caster. She has a nice voice and knows what she is talking about.
The commentators on GLHF #1 are horrible. The crap they spew out of their mouth (mainly the Maven guy) is so ignorant and aggravating. It'd be okay if they don't have the charisma or whatever as long as they actually have some knowledge of the game. It sucks that I have to watch it on mute because I can't stand their banter.
However Gunrun and Eleine (i think?) on GLHF #2 are actually pretty good. They are both excited about the game and convey legit thoughts for the viewers. You can tell they actually enjoy the games.
Kudos to the folks on the Khaldor stream too! They are awesome even though I don't understand a thing they say :D

I really appreciate GLHF for spending so much time and resources to cover this event. Without their team, we would not have been able to fully enjoy some amazing games.
I did however have an encounter on GLHF2 during the morrow/tarson game that left a sour taste in my mouth. The camera movement was moving all over the place too quickly. This jerky motion made spectating quite difficult. When I commented in chat it was hard to follow, the broadcaster responded "I am trying, **** you." I understand the stress 2,300+ viewers may bring, but come on.
I spent 10 minutes searching and found Raelcun's video that may help you with camera motion. Please check it out.
Again, I appreciate the time and resources spent on covering this event. I look forward to the semi-finals.

I thought Martijn did fine but Maven has been pretty bad as a caster, bad chemistry with the interrupting, and even if he's tired he shouldn't just get up and leave martijn on his own (luckily he got a co caster)

I also agree with this. I really don't like casters who just state the obvious. I'm not saying they should be like Day9 with analysis, but at least try to give some (correct) insight. Martijn and Maven are very lackluster. I'm enjoying the German stream much more and I also don't speak a word of German. Khaldor is just way more entertaining.
Eleine=awesome! How high is she on ladder? She seems to know those little tidbits(Like Ret being good offracing protoss!) about players that make listening to her commentating VERY interesting! Please continue the good work... Also loved the Tastosis references...
Beard, the short features you bring up, just giving people a heads up whats going on and filming around the place are awesome. You're really good at not dropping the ball, kudos to you sir.
The production is good for GLHF#1 @ assembly (only problem is the tech problems). But the casters are not doing it for me. They should try to have 1 guy do play by play and the other should try to think abit more before he says something. Great music in the pauses.

Yeah. I also switched to Khaldor, the GLHF casters made me really sad. I dunno, it just seems they don't care about the game or they are nervous or something. A cast really needs energy, positive energy. The casters had a lot of negative energy, they almost seemed hostile at times. I don't think the casters are necessarily bad, they just have the wrong mindset.
It's like they are watching the game at home and casually talking about it with some friend on Skype. There is no Day9 energy, there is no TotalBiscuit energy, there isn't even any HD/Husky energy. It's like BlizShouter casting a bad game when he hasn't slept for 22 hours. That's the level of energy the casters are putting into it.
Gief this version of Nothing Else Matters. Could someone throw me a link to this version? Just tried to find it on Youtube by adding all kind of keywords but I can't seem to find it! :<
I too have to criticize the GLHF.tv stream despite the work they and their team have put into their coverage.
Stream #1 was downright unwatchable. The commentators alternated between states of cluelessness, massive demotivation and inadequate bad humor. Also, they tried copying Tasteosis' style so badly in so many situations that it just made me cringe. I was sad for the games I missed because I couldn't stand watching their stream, and ended up watching Khaldor for pretty much all the rest of the day.
Those guys could be decent casters - some time in the future. But they shouldn't cast such a huge tournament when they're clearly not in the mood or don't know what they're talking about (or both). Too bad TotalBiscuit didn't get to cast more games, he would have made for a much better english cast.

Agree with all of this, I too switched to the german one. I love watching GLHF.tv on sundays with Gunrun. Back in the beta during the very first zotacs, getting up watching GLHF with Gunrun and his awesome voice+music was awesome. ;D
But the cast during Assembly isn't good at all. Much has been mentioned already. And they don't have to be day9, there are alot of casting styles, e.g Day9 vs TB, completely different styles but both excellent casters in their own way. I'm sure they are doing a better job then I could do but I expect them to be more professional and have more quality in their casting/commentary, specially when they are the official english casters resulting in other english streams getting kick out off the game. I had a hard time believing what they were saying and taking them serious, felt like it was two randoms doing this for their first time.
And during the interview with the Liquid guys I just turned it off.. Felt like a fan boy was commentating, not holding the mic when Tyler was walking etc..

The music is actually really good ,from classic rock to metal , 2 bad ur musical knowledge and tastes are probably lady gaga and 50 cent.
more like Elliott Smith, LCD Soundsystem, Wilco, etc...
Anyways, I apologize for starting an argument about music on this thread. To keep it on proper topic, I think the casters are actually doing a better job for this finals match. The stream seems to lag during big battles though.

They should be playing Parov Stelar and Infected Mushroom The hard (finnish?) metal they are playing in the pauses just sounds like loud noise to me.
I don't usually have a go at casters, but it must be said that the two people casting today were terrible. They had no motivation, just sapped all of the energy out of the games and the event to the point it made me not care about the tournament and I went and did something else. Bear in mind this was the semi final.
The technician bloke (Beard I think?) did a better job than them, and even tried to get them pumped up by having the crowd give them a cheer. All it did was elicit a nervous laugh and then more dead air. Very poor.
I have to agree with a lot of people. I prefer the german stream over glhf #1, though I do not understand german what so ever. TheGunRun and that girl he was casting with, did an awesome job imo. There were times the camera was a bit off the action, but the casting was great.
On February 13 2011 06:45 intalex wrote: Had to mute the stream, some of the worst casting I have ever herd.
There's a lot of white knighting and swooning in this thread, its a shame. I do agree with the above poster, had to mute both streams while watching and eventually decided on watching Khaldor's stream because the quality was better. I probably wouldn't be so harsh in my following post if the there weren't so many hiccups in the broadcast and the streaming quality wasn't the best.
There was way to much random banter in GLHF 2. The female caster spent way too much time babbling then commentating, the male caster sounded nervous working with a female, and they were late / outright missed key points in several games. GLHF 1 was just outright terrible, neither had a casting voice, tried copying tastetosis style, and very little insight. Both GLHF1 and 2 did a terrible at job at making lack luster games exciting. It was just very stale and I didn't find myself watching / listening for long.
I don't want to be overly negative, but it seems like I have to be crass given that it seems people are swooning over a female commentator. I do have to say though, out of the casters in GLHF1 and 2, she definitely showed the most knowledge. If she got a better microphone, takes some advice from the previous post about voice quality, and calms down a bit with the random banter, then she has some potential as a caster. I just don't have anything positive to say about the others.
I was very disappointed Total Biscuit wasn't casting this tournament.
casting was really bad imo, i enjoyed the german en polish stream more even though i don't speak those languages. i really hope next lan glhf wont be the only english streamers there.
Martijn was ok imo, Maven was really bad, his negativity late yesterday ruined the cast completely, sure he was tired but that was very unprofessional. Thebeard was awesome and so was the music!
On February 13 2011 07:07 Tanith wrote: over all the casting was poor in all honesty but the production by beard was excellent, so props to him !
Well put, I agree with your assessment.
Agreed. It sort of pisses me off to see that awesome production by thebeard get ruined by horrible casting. Martjin was ok(usually he is awesome and one of my favourite casters) and maven was something a lot worse...
I usually do not flame on casters that I listen too, but I actually could not watch GLHF Tv. I instead watched Khaldor the German caster (and I don't speak any German). The casting was TERRIBLE. They knew almost nothing about the game. "Morrow has a 1 drone lead, idk what this means for the game" was a common occurrence. Casters cannot be casting the Finals of a Tourney and not know what is happening. I think if they just did more of a Shout Cast, they might do ok. But with the informative style they were trying to pull off, it failed hard.
Sorry guys, I don't mean to be a dick, but that cast definitely needs to improve.
I hope to see a improvement in the future! GL
Though for the Beard, the production was amazing. I hope next time, can have some better casters so you're production can really take off!
I would have loved to see TheBeard actually casting. His effort to keep everything up and running, filling the time between games was sooo huge! Excellent! As the others are complaining about the casting, i have to say, their synergy was awfull. A team should work together, not discussing things live on the stream. Also, Maven seemed to be pretty new to casting, as his kind of speaking was not entertaining, rather boring O_O. This really dissapointed me. It caused me to switch over to Khaldors stream. Hopefully we get to see TheBeard&Martijn next time !
I would agree with most of the arguments posted. The production level wos really high: Map, Location Preview with Webcam on to the casters, smooth transitions with intro video. In addition to that backup caster / entertainer (the beard), who takes over if there is a break. So besides those tech. problems during the match for rank 3-4 I would say the production value was high, compared to maybe other LAN streams.
On the other hand the casters were really disappointing and were not able to highlight tension when needed. Of course we have to keep in mind that after casting 10-12 hours in a row it gets hard to bring a lot of emotions into the cast, but still compared to other casts it was all in all a poor performance...
I don't really care about excitement like many others seem to. But the actual knowledge of the game from these two casters was really bad. They were totally clueless at all times and you just get annoyed by it. That's why I like artosis, tasteless and day9; they actually know what they're talking about.
Edit: Props to thebeard though, he was awesome as always.

well, they need to get to low diamond first of all...
Also got to agree with the majority that I really dont think that the casting was quite what you would expect for an event like this, but id love to have The Beard involved again, really nice production from him. I also enjoyed the music =). And Id also would love to see more casting from Eliene, seems to have really much knowledge and understanding of the game.

if they even are in low diamond. some things were just plain wrong. not their opinions. they were just incorrect. like saying 2+2 equals 5 incorrect
I agree with most of the other comments. TheBeard was great, Martijn was ok, Maven was subpar, Gunrun was pretty solid as usual, and Eleine was good.
Additionally, it was great production value from TheBeard, especially since it was just him producing AND it was actually on-location. I look forward to seeing him produce more SC2 casts.

She's like mid or high gold I think, with less than 150 games played so nothing special, but she watches a ton

There was one problem with Eleine and Gunrun. The voices. Each of them is OK, but when they are together there is a massive difference in tone which makes balancing sound quite hard. You need to adjust EQ to have him be loud enough and her not too loud.
Not a problem with either caster's voice, just when combined it's a struggle to balance the sound on my end. I blame Gunrun mainly, for having a super deep voice. Normal people wouldn't cause this problem.
I wish they hadn't stopped casting Assembly, I switched to Khaldor when they left.
TheBeard carried the cast for sure, but it was awkward listening to him talk like a perv. I remember when I was younger my dad said the top of the mall was the best cause you can look down and see boobs
I'm glad you posted your reply because it definitely explains what people can't see at home and how they should be better with their criticism. I really enjoyed your casting and best of luck in the future.

It just explains how I failed. I shouldn't give a shit when there's drama or hate going on. And if people give me a hard time I can brush it off. But the shit they put Maven through just got to me. Regardless, the show should've gone on, I shouldn't have given in.

I'm actually getting a little scared now, as I'm gearing to make my own casting/commentating debut. People seem to be extremely intolerant to casters who aren't omniscient, which I may point out, no one is, and it's real sad to see that people can't appreciate what they're getting.
I was perfectly fine watching the GLHF#1 cast up until the unfortunate disconnect on that epic Grubby game, and I switched to Khaldor's stream, despite not knowing any German, for the rest of the event because he just seemed to be so in to the games he was casting, especially when a fellow German was playing.
Perhaps you'd've been more energetic if it wasn't for the exhausting ordeal of travelling, as I heard Maven's story of how he got to Assembly was quite tiresome, but what I felt was mostly lacking was the excitement factor. I mean Khaldor was sitting in a comfy office chair and probably lives very close to where he does his casting. Comparing that to the chairs usually provided at major LAN events, being away from all the comforts of home, travelling, sleeping in hotels (or on a concrete floor) it all adds up, unfortunately.
The production was very professional and tip-top, so major props to thebeard and his works on the production side.
suggestion: in the description part of the stream site on teamliquid, could you guys put the "Currently streaming" and "streamer" parts up and update it every time you stream? It will help viewers a lot to understand the contain of the stream if its not sc2
Eleine was awesome, never heared her before and I must say that she's absolutly one of the best casters I've listened to in a long time. I mean she sat on good knowledge and obviously has a brain suited for this when it comes to general analysis and the basics which in the end made me overlook the random banter she was putting out at times (which I think she needs to work on for sure), and that's a good sign imo.
Less ranting, more good casting and she's gonna be a eSport Spear!
She's good for eSports for all obvious reasons .
Gunrun is Gunrun, he has the voice but that's it. His knowledge and way of prestenting whatever he wants to present during combat or when there's a lul just comes out wrong... He worked well with Eleine though since she was upholding his problems very well.
the GLHF#1 commentating was not the best (didnt watch any with TheBeared so can't say much about him) - Imo Maven is a pretty poor commentator regardless of sleep issues or not (it surely made the "bad" commentating worse though). It just felt that the commentating was all over the place, out of place and yeah well, it was just awkward at times. I understand that sleep and other issues makes it harder to cast, and I'm not judging completly based on that. It's just my opinion about him as a caster, and not a person . Seems like a cool guy. Production was great though.
Thanks for all the coverage regardless btw, it is very appreciated!

Why? I mean the whole SC2 casting business is very new and the game is still very new. It should be pretty obvious that some people will succeed and some will not, and that is down to what people like. You can't just start doing something and think that just because you are "now into it" you should have everyones respect and everyone should like you. That's never gonna be the case.
If you're bad you're bad, if the majority thinks so they will let you hear it (Should be done in a more civil and constructive fashion though ofc). People will often provide the argument that those that like it usually don't speak up and all you hear is the negative feedback and while I can agree to some extent that it can be true it sure isnt universal in any way otherwise there wouldnt be a mention of Day9 in pretty much every fucking thread on TL saying how awesome he is. He's obviously doing something right and people like it.
One thing I think that most people should realise - casting is very hard and some people, even though you can learn alot, just wont have the "it" factor that you need to be truly succesful. This goes for pretty much anything that needs good performance and acceptance of viewers (like every sport, TV-show, News reports and so on).
I love the fact that alot of people are trying it, but with time the bad will be gone, and the good will stay and that is due to how people will react to their performances. So try not to be scared, and be prepared to accept alot of critique and learn from it, and then you'll notice if you're cut out to be a caster or not .
Just thought I'd say something else aswell since I'm sure the casters are reading this;
Take the critique you get here and use it together will all the other factors that they themselves are aware of (like tough casting enviroment, sleep issues and travel issues etc) and see where the critique meets the other problems and kind of accept that the different factors made things even harder, but still try to find some bits of truth in what they read and see where it can be improved on.
People will just provide opinions here, and it's important to thin out what can be more true and what is just a opinion based upon what has been seen and not taking all factors into consideration.
My biggest criticism I would give is that right when the games were over the two of you would stop talking immediately and there wasn't much talking right after the match up until the next one. Obviously this probably is due to all of the energy it takes to make sure you guys can get into the next game so that's understandable. I would just say a quick recap of the entire game with some talking points you guys have prepared for in between matches. Hope that's a little helpful but overall I thought you guys did a great job and I appreciate the effort you guys put into broadcasting the tournament.
And great job to TheBeard for all the things he did behind and in front of the scenes.

We actually couldn't see or hear what was on stream. So we didn't know when we were still on, when the music would hit or what people were seeing. It was a production issue in that there was no audio mixer and we couldn't get yet another screen. Something I'll definitely put in the lessons learned report.
I'm curious, what made you guys switch from ustream to justin.tv? Maybe this was covered earlier in the thread but I loved the ustream sites and don't see why justin.tv is better or anything.
I believe TheGunRun found out that j.tv allows some neat things to happen behind the curtains on j.tv which ustream does not allow. Also it's rated by the majority to be superior. I love the multi resolution options.
Just watching Gunrun 'being a better caster daily' and will try to offer some constructive criticism.
Make a conscious effort not to say 'like' 'uh' 'um'. Don't combine these these words with 'yeah' and don't use 'yeah' randomly in sentences. I notice 'so...yep' is a bad offender also. If you feel yourself about to say any of these words, replace it with silence instead and then move on to your next thought. Over time your brain will fill in the silence with something more useful.
Deliberately enunciate your words. Doing this will naturally force you to speak slower. Talking faster doesn't mean more hype but instead you usually end up slurring and stumbling over your own words. You can create just as much tension being slow and deliberate by putting emphasis on the words.
SC2 related: To fill the dead space during the start of every match, you could give some info about the players (nationality, play style, ladder rank, etc)
You seem to be good friends with DJWheat. Ask him about pacing and flow. Anyways glhf

Almost all of my work has been with GLHF.tv so you can find a lot of my stuff there. Most of the recent craft cup coverage as well as Assembly Winter vods at GLHF2. Gunrun just posted a link to today's casts.

i have to call GLHF.tv out on this comment "frequently ... Craft Cup"
you guys hardly ever cover the craftcup any longer but you do put your name on the front page of craftcup.com as the list of streamers.
when i go there you guys are either off air or casting some other event.
its pretty bm against craftcup for it to happen at least 4 times.
you guys used to be good and willing to cover all kinds of events but lately you guys are not on the air much and when you are there is a lot of down time between games while martijn points fingers at teh zotac admins for not finding him games.
as a suggestion ... why dont you try have 2, 3 or more people working on the stream when a live event is on.
hopefully you guys will return to your innovative methods and top notch quality when SC2 first came out.

"We" are not adding ourselves to anything, I personally forgot the feature even existed. TheGunrun most certainly covers the occasional craftcup and is the only one that can list us aside from the CC admins. Furthermore, Eleine (Kismet349, who you quoted) isn't part of GLHF, though she is a regular and very welcome guest of TheGunrun. She doesn't speak for GLHF so that's hardly something you can call GLHF out on.
For me, craftcup just isn't that attractive to cover anymore because there's way too many low level tournaments like the craftcup lites. Most of the matches just aren't high level.
I say all this without discrediting CC, because they do bring something vital to the scene. Almost every other day anyone can sign up to play one of their tournaments, which is great.
It's just no secret less and less pros sign up for these kind of tournaments so when we have the option of casting a top level BDL match vs a CC, it's not much of a contest. People want to see the pros. We all only have X hours a week to spend on something like this considering we do not get paid. I really just have to pick the most efficient way to spend my time.
If I could cast full time, I would be all over tournaments like this and I would consider myself blessed to have so much potential content. However I'm also trying to graduate with honors and miss the occasional zotac because I'm a seasonticket holder to Ajax.

If by "points fingers at" you mean I ask them to find matches, yeah and they're quite happy to help. They offer to help. Yes if one of them tells me "d'oh, started a game without you", I'm going to state as much on the stream, but that's as far as I'd go. Without the admins we wouldn't be able to cover anything, they're the unsung heroes of esports.
I'd like to ask you a question. Based on your feedback, how do you suggest we improve our content? Finding more dependable people is always tough and if we do find them, how do you suggest we use them?
i'm always having to tell Maista or Brotkohl to pull your stream off the board on fridays. so this stuff about "i didnt know the feature existed" is a bunch of garbage.
to be fair, its probably not you, Martijn, putting it up on the list on friday evenings though.

Don't try to tell me what I do and don't do. Have an admin check the last time I even logged into my account and don't accuse me of lying if you can't back it up, thank you. If your only purpose here is to falsely accuse me, feel free to not post, thank you.
This whole thing is stupid and a waste of time to be honest. But I still would like to say what I saw. I don't follow CraftCup tourneys closely but still, I did notice GLHF.tv's link on the front page without them doing any casting of the tournament. After some time, I noticed the link was gone...

So, I just heard back and I only just found out you guys are from imba.tv or something. Can you just troll your own thread or something instead? It's kind of petty guys.
I have nothing to do with imba tv. I only mentioned what I witnessed once. GLHF.tv's link was on the front page of CraftCup without you guys covering it.
Hopefully it was not intentional because otherwise, that would be really lame.

I personally do not know, why he get the status back, since he used to do stuff like this a lot.
This incident was funny, because the rate of posts in the chat was less then 10 a minute or something like that.
You guys have such awesome overlays and the production quality is awesome! Thank you for putting on always putting on a great show. Also thank you for making me skip work to watch your casts =P keep on rocking.
Thanks gunrun and GLH.tv for all the great tournament coverage and being apart of the sc2 community! I just ask that you guys try to keep the production tab up a little bit more throughout the casts. <3<3
Nice stream always have enjoyed the video quality, not the music very much and constant turning off and on now of the entire bottom area of the screen which is some new feature i guess. Also you guys should drop that Lama kid as mod, hes shit and was banning people for basically nothing just trying to be a douche, was also talking really rudely to people in chat for no reason as well, seems to really throw away any reason to have him there if he cant just sit back and chill and ban if someone gives a real reason by trolling raging or spamming. overall tho still a good stream.
Get Eleine_Sun to do some triple commentaries with you guys!
And "Above & Beyond - Can't Sleep (Super8 & Tab Remix)" is great as filler-music between sets! Oh, and "Hans Zimmer - Dream Is Collapsing" and "Dream Within a Dream"
I just love content like the interview with TheGunrun. Please find a way to integrate that social element with streaming games. I know Scan is active on twitter and facebook and thegunrun is testing stream from car, both is very refreshing to see.
Gunrun, you missed the pivotal drop in game two of Grubby vs Sjow today. It would have been nice to see Sjow's drop taking out Grubby's third base, which forced Grubby to attack and lose. The same thing happened in game three; you only noticed Sjow's drop after most of Grubby's main had been destroyed. When the action picked up on three fronts your commentary actually slowed down. Also, frantically clicking on the minimap makes viewers dizzy.
On the positive, you speak quickly enough, you have a good enough understanding of the game, and you keep your voice at correct levels. Keep making progress, improving your vocabulary, try not to be repetitive, and you could be a great caster. Best of luck.
I think your production quality is awesome. If you had a tv studio like GOM it would surpass them easily. Your in between game setup/splash is nice and clean; maybe put a bracket on the in between game splash?
In game your name/score board is minimal but easy to read and non invading. Your player introductions were smooth, clean, and Accurate!
Overall an awesome production, sound quality/level was great, clear and clean video (jtv). You guys are going places.
- music louder, script for dying (For some statement or the end). Reason: Its disturbing, how music is either loud with loud voices, or at very low volume with still loud voices
You know, GunRun, it's hard to please people and yourself at the same time, and to evolve your casting you need to please yourself first so you can keep your style. I know that you are asking feedback, people are giving it for free, but that shouldn't affect you emotionally. I know it's something cold to do, but I guess we need the ego for something... I suggest you see suggestions as suggestions and implement them realistically, and not wishfully, if that makes any sense. GLHF and sorry if I read you wrong :-S

Watching the BYOC right now and I think you guys are EASILY the second best casting duo here. Awesome work guys. Love the "ooh it's not day9, mew mew mew mew" lol.
I really like your casting, but your approach to dota2 is really ... improvable! Referring to your game with Crystal Maiden: Dont buy boots first. Thats what newbies do. You are really better of with buying some stats. If you level your ice imprisonment, then why do you cast your level 1 frost nova all the time? Thats a waste of mana. Freeze him and attack him. Thats far more efficient. Also if you go mid, try to control the runes. That said, an imrovement to last hitting would be advisable, but this will come along with practice. And don´t worry: Everyone was a beginner once, and dota (2) is a hard one to get into!
Just tuned in for IEM cast. I like the pauses. Think that too many casters just say what they see happening on the screen. Better to keep those pauses if they provide resources to such excellent observer control, and especially letting commentate on higher level: how builds, scout, reactions, army movements etc succeed.
Hey guys, just to answer some things. Switching resolutions is on twitch's side as I understand it. It'll be available when there's not much load on the servers, but unavailable when the servers are stressed. I will ask thegunrun to confirm.
"The happy animu girl banner" is the fine work of ATK. You can find him over at http://twitter.com/ATK402 Be sure to tell him you like what he did, I'm sure he'd very much appreciate it.
When it comes to pauses, I think that's how I handle solocasting. I feel that if I talk talk talk, I sometimes start missing things or missreading things. Things I beat myself up over after. So to compensate for not having anyone else to fill the dead air some times I'll throw out a line like "so lets look at the bottomline" and try to evaluate the game where it stands regardless of what happened previously. I'm glad to hear it doesn't bother everyone.
An extreme example of this was Idra vs Supernova during IEM. I think it's one of my worst casts this year. I felt like it was painful to watch, Idra with a 0-4 record and Supernova just picking all-in timings and I think that showed. I should do better than just repeat "oof this looks painful". With Idra winning in the end I'm sure I could've hyped it up a bit more.
The stronger team color mod you can pick up off TL. Some people like it, others hate it. I believe that especially for those with poorer connections watching in lower resolutions it really makes things a lot easier to follow. So I hope those that dislike it can sympathize with those less fortunate connection-wise.
Beyond that, I got to cast some Call of Duty 4 this weekend at LAN after a long hiatus from the game and I'm training to cover a Benelux Street Fighter 4 AE tournament on the 28th. For those events, I don't list the stream on TL (not sc2 so..) So feel free to subscribe the channel or follow glhftv or me on twitter if you're interested in those games as well!
Hi, babydriz here. Although I don't have basically anything to do with the GLHF stream or production, I do spend a portion of my time scouting for music to add to Martijn's playlist. I've been really flattered that a lot of the music added over the past year has received positive feedback, and so, for your convenience I'm updating the playlist on here Hope you continue to enjoy listening to the streams and as always, good luck, have fun.

I might be biased here, but I still think Martijn is one of the better casters out there. Leon was great as well for the Dreamhack casts.
I do have a suggestion though Martijn, if you're tweeting or otherwise busy during game, maybe put your cam on the co-caster's perspective while he's talking?
Otherwise mostly good on camera work though. Plenty of other casters where I just see the minimap going crazy with battles and said caster just concentrate on buildings or whatever.
