Grealish gives you a winger/10 who cuts in from the left in a squad where you have about 4 who do that from the left. And Sterling you have a nippy player who is right footed but plays on the right. Not advocating for them necessarily but they do bring something a bit different. However I guess having options who can shake up the forward line’s thrust is kinda pointless if you’ve got a coach who’s so reticent to make in-game changes. England and Southgate personally massively got out of jail there, they didn’t change the game from the bench, they left it too late. Again! Perhaps I’ve been too forgiving in the past, but this time around it’s criminal. I remember many an England squad where there’d be quite the drop-off in quality if a player was injured or just knackered and had to come off. Whereas now you’ve got quality options with different characteristics you can use. If Foden’s having a rough day at the office you’ve got Cole Palmer for goodness sake. I can see the argument in dropping Kane, but he’s kinda been so integral for England (and is just in general a class above) that how can you drop him now? He’s basically been the man for so long, has come through time and time again on the big stage, and his understudies haven’t got much of a look in, and when they have they haven’t looked electric. I think a trick was missed to give them more time over the last while to acclimate them. Now, with England starting this campaign so badly too you’ve even less chance to give them that exposure. If England had guaranteed group winner’s earlier you can at least give them an outing. Aside from team cohesion, which I suspect is a big likely issue it’s a huge ask for those lads to hit the ground running on such a stage, with both that lack of game time as well as familiarity with this kind of often-crushing pressure This part is what also doesn't make sense to me. You have a very deep bench where you don't lose much quality and can use good players off the bench to destroy tired legs. Instead he tries to cram all of them into the game all at once and it just doesn't make any sense.

Think he has coached 19 games and selected 19 different line-ups. Overthinks everything and never plays to win despite our attacking talent. Terrible tournament and glad it’s over tbh.

Seems an odd one but maybe Tedesco wanted to play him a bit deeper and spraying it around rather than have him swamped by France’s midfield? I missed this one but KDB was so much better than his Belgian teammates in most of the games I did see it was ridiculous. Heard France were a bit meh but more than good enough today, that sound about right to you folk?

Younger Ronaldo was always jumping a head higher, and when the cross came even close to him, you could expect a perfectly placed header with some significant force behind it. And now he is missing headers left and right, and the ones he connects with look more like random bounces.

Who else is there in the Saudi league, Laporte? I think some of that contingent are looking decent partly because they’re not absolutely gassed after a European club season, partly because they’re very good players who are tried and tested at the highest level and haven’t just forgotten how to play football in a year or two Who else is out there that’s played here, Malinkovic-Savic for Serbia is a name that springs to mind but I can’t recall others

He's also just as selfish as he was in his prime, but without the ability to convert every half-chance he gets into a goal. Normally I'd say age doesn't remove players' magic touch. I saw Maradonna play in some weird friendly when he was over 50 and probably only barely weaned off his drug addiction. He was obese and ridiculous, but he got the ball somewhere a bit outside the box with a lot of time and space and curled it beautifully into the goal. Meanwhile Ronaldo took that free kick like an ass. Should clearly have let someone do an indirect kick, but his ego won't let him. E: the flick to Leao was very nice.
