Nice, topped the group, much better playstyle, something is building, more people playing in there proper positions. Need to fix the Foden/Bellingham situation, i hope Walker starts left back and Trent right back too.

I am not as disappointed as everyone else seems to be, because these teams are just parking the bus vs us, when a team will try and attack us, there will be bags of space for us to play into and we will hurt teams. I was scared of this defence going into it this tournament and now we have no issues in that department.

Lets go!! ITS COMING HOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

England does have a very fair chance at reaching the finals. They also have a very fair chance at being knocked out on penalties or in a low score game before the finals, be it vs Italy/Switzerland or Austria or Belgium. They don't look like a team that's going to dominate anyone, but sure - they have enough individual quality and defensive cohesion to be a contender for a draw against anyone. As explained before, almost all winners need to go through extra time or penalties. I'd be absolutely shocked if England broke that mold, but they're at least a coinflip+ in every match until the finals.

Thats a lot of copium after such a group. England didnt score against Slovenia, just let that sink in.
Only win against Serbia, and even that barely. The game against Denmark was also not convincing tbh.

Guys I think Pande's lost it. I mean, I would too after being forced to watch that team play.

Funny that the last 5 minutes of the game with Trent and Gordon yielded more exciting football than the entire 85 before that. For the love of god, for a team with all this star power, there's 0 creativity. Hence, why you need to play Trent at RB. Walker was dreadful, keep him at LB instead to shore up our defense when Trent moves up (basically play a back 3 shifted over when Trent bombs up the pitch). Gordon Saka as our wingers, Rice/Bellingham up the middle and pick either Foden or Palmer as your 10 with Watkins up front. I'm so over the Kane running back all the way to collect the ball from a DM position.

Only in England could the national team win their group without losing a game, whilst only conceding a single goal from a 25-yard strike, and still have the majority of "fans" calling for the manager to be sacked mid-tournament. The team would probably play with a lot more confidence if they weren't getting booed for winning their group. Slovenia beat Portugal coming into the tournament. They're not pushovers.

Clown "fans" and clown media.

England has had 5 golden generations in the last 5 generations.

We never seem to have team without glaring weaknesses.

There's good attacking talent in this squad but the midfield and defence are sorely lacking in balance.

Southgate has become a weakness too. It seems to me he's just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks this time.

I do understand why the fans and media are upset with that performance. This is like starpower times ten with zero plan on the pitch. The perfomance should be the same without any coach at all.
They should try to recruit Rangnick after the EUROs.
That said, France is in the same boat, but at least they seem to be trying to do something, though it's not clear what that is.

France are in the same boat, but their fans weren't throwing garbage at the manager because they didn't beat Poland.

Playing for or managing England must be one of the most toxic experiences in football. It's no surprise we don't win anything.

France is the worst disappointment so far, they managed to score one goal in 3 games (own goal doesnt count of course)
Next to that is England because of what you have in this squat, the value of all these superstar players, this performance does not fit. Trying to argue that mighty Slovenia is so stronk, yeah ofc no team is a pushover because all qualified. But really? Slovenia is rank 30, England is nr 1. You didnt see that much of a difference yesterday on the field.

France did manage to create several chances yesterday and a lucky bounce the other way here and there and you have a very different game.

I was travelling during the night so did not see england but from the previous cases the team seemed rather numb.

So in comparison, France was not brilliant but poland had a MoM GK yesterday, otherwise they could have scored a couple (specially mbappe, which is the biggest flaw i always point with him, creates and scores a lot but also fails a lot lot). England so far did not seem like it. But again i did not see it yesterday.

This does not mean england cannot win the tournament, but it just shows why similar results might be matched with different reactions from the fans.

Clown "fans" and clown media.

I don’t think that’s particularly atypical amongst football nations who have realistic expectations of doing things at tournaments such as these. Indeed Cesc Fabregas said the English media was relatively reasonable compared to his native Spanish while doing punditry the other day.

These have been pretty diabolical performances that are very symptomatic of the criticisms people have had of Southgate for a fair while now. Myself, and the many who have been broadly positive over the Southgate era are getting that sinking feeling that maybe the naysayers had it right all along.

Now I guess the hope is that they’re just blowing off some cobwebs and will step it up with the higher stakes games. And on the plus side for England, the draw is much less brutal than it could have been so they (in theory) have a little more leeway to play their way in. At time of press next looks likely to be the Dutch and it’s not like they’ve been impressive.

I will say that not taking a fit, left-footed left back is the only bad call that can’t be somewhat rectified or mitigated a bit at this stage. With Foden frequently wandering inside into areas Bellingham plies his trade in it’s funnelling all the play into very predictable channels.

It could be that minor injuries enforcing changes are all it takes for them to click a bit better, or players just click a bit/Southgate is a bit bold.

Maybe it is the pressure and weight of expectation, maybe it’s a physical issue but none of Kane, Bellingham and Saka look like they’re fully fit and firing to me. Rice has had some of the worst games I’ve ever seen him play. Even if Southgate was a managerial wizard having IMO 4 of the 5 most important, irreplaceable players you have (with Walker probably being #5) not really bringing it I don’t think is entirely on him.

Palmer, Mainoo and Gordon did their causes no harm with stints of various lengths the last game. I think Mainoo may be the only one who actually makes it in from the start in the next round mind, Palmer looked bright and somewhat fresh but maybe he’s destined to be that first forward. Gordon isn’t the brilliant technician that Foden/Palmer are but he’s both really quick and actually plays wide and stretches the play, the side might be better balanced with him.

Moaning/criticism aside, I still believe! Plus even if I didn’t throwing things at the team is asinine behaviour

Southgate has become a weakness too. It seems to me he's just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks this time.

The midfield is a tricky one, both Mainoo and Wharton feel like they could bring that balance, albeit they’re slightly different players but it’s possibly a year or two too early for them. Or at least it’s a risk to make them fundamental components.

Nor do they have some wily veteran with the characteristics you’d want to balance the midfield that you can bring in for one last hurrah

On the flipside, Rice and Bellingham are top notch in their positions, you don’t really need another top notch player, just somebody good that complements them and frees them to play to their strengths.

But aye, one is getting that impression that Southgate is somewhat trial and erroring it. At previous tournaments you could still point out limitations in players/coach, but you could sorta identity the overall plan.

This time around you’ve perhaps got more talent to play with, but the plan is difficult to discern.

Its the passing that gets me. We have all these quality players who play for top sides but the passing is so weak. That's got to be a midfield problem surely.
We just don't seem to ever be able to pick out that decisive pass through the lines.
Trippier is the worst for this. The guy just can't ever see a pass, so he ends up going back to the CBs 99% of the time. Its so boring.

It’s so, so insipid

I mean I sorta get why Foden isn’t quite the Man City player in an England shirt, he’s used to a lot of rapid-fire exchanges with a really fluid, drilled side, cute 1-2s and a lot of movement around me. He’s what I’d crudely call a ‘system 10’ where he’s an integral part in a flowing machine. He’s clearly a bloody fantastic player, but I don’t think he’s the guy who can drag a lesser team along to quite the same degree as some others. Conversely, Grealish or Maddison I think prosper more in a ‘you’re the 10, make something happen’ for lesser sides, but would be worse in a Guardiola side, indeed the former we’ve seen that.

I think Palmer can do that, it’s a big call but in international football, with squads that aren’t as cohesive and drilled maybe the guy who’ll be that bit more individualistic and ballsy is the better option.

Ramble aside the concerning thing isnt that Foden isnt playing his best football, but the general passing/movement is just so sub-par across the board, agreed there
