Think I’ll never show my face again in this thread if we botch this one. Pretty exciting bill tonight, spoilt for choice and a fair amount of stakes for the penultimate round which is nice

He is too old now to command any sort of real money from a Fulham or Wolverhampton side. Not good enough to go to any team better also. Regarding Juve, even Macabi Haifa got one over them and that is a team that is just glad to be there. At least around here the big surprise in that group was benfica not being mauled by PSG. That's the achievement they got as far as i'm concerned. Them going over Juve was very debated around here and most people were glad about the draw as juve was showing to be terrible to start the season. On another note, I never understood the hype about Kessie (outside football manager at least). He moves so slowly, his first touch is clearly not Barcelona level and even his phisicality (is that how you write it?) leaves a lot to be desired. Was he way better in Milan? Is it just the context in Barça that is not good for him?

He does not favor Busquets or anything. He benched Jordi Alba when he saw that Balde was better. He put Pique on the bench when he got Araujo and Kounde. As for Busquets, there are no replacements. We can argue whether De Jong is the best replacement for Sergio Busquets. Xavi would be glad to bench him whenever he sees someone really capable of playing in this position. Yes, Xavi might be stubborn. We can criticize him for not playing De Jong more often. But what if he was forced not to play De Jong? I believe it is not Xavi’s fault. He was probably forced to put De Jong on the bench so he could consider a transfer out of the club. Maybe it is this way, and perhaps it is not. Furthermore, do you remember Koeman when he said in an interview that someone like Busquets should not play anymore for Barcelona? Everyone was happy and talking about this. What happened when he became the manager? Nothing. It was not Koeman’s fault, and the same goes for Xavi. Even Koeman didn’t see De Jong fit to play there because he likes to dribble a lot. Moreover, I criticized Xavi a lot. For example, him not playing Kessie more often. Unfortunately, whenever Xavi played him, Kessie seemed lost on the pitch. Yesterday was Kessie’s best chance, and he didn’t impress at all. The Inter game at home was not his fault either. Pique, Busquets, and Eric cost us the game. However, these were the players at his disposal at the time: no Christensen, no Araujo, and no Kounde. Two of the goals we conceded yesterday against Bayern were Bellerin’s fault. I am 100% sure that Xavi would have never started him if he had Araujo or Sergi Roberto ready to play. Xavi is doing the best he can. These are the players we have. We can criticize him because there are definitely some things that he does wrong. However, he should not be sacked. #SAM

I think a lot of the critics are saying that the current Barca roster is looking much stronger than what most of their previous managers have had recently. On paper it's definitely looking stronger, but I think part of improvement brought by the new incoming players is negated by the old players degrading due to aging and lack of long term coherency and all that. You can bring in some world class players, but they'll only be that good if the foundations are rotting at the same time. In that sense I think Xavi likely needs another big transfer window before the potential improvements really start to show. That being said, I'm a bit unsure on whether they're looking good even on the aspects where they've had plenty of resources and rework already. We'll see.

This mix of young and old only works if you have really good old and motivated ones. How should ex-glorious Barca players ever want to motivate themselves to their prime? Some might put in sufficient effort out of loyalty, but the board has probably done a good job on undermining that fondness with their haphazard business. In that sense a bigger wipe in the board room could maybe even motivate and improve the players on the pitch. Sense of shared responsibility can be a pretty powerful thing when it works.

In with a decent shot at La Liga and maybe not quite ready to make a really deep run in the CL, feels about right to me. They were good value in the first Bayern game, and they could conceivably have won both games against my Inter boys, it’s not like they completely bombed in the European theatre either
