From my view he was the English playmaker, but didn't give it much thought. England dropped too deep imo. They let Italy have it when they took a break from the early high press (they always do this about half way through the first half) but then Italy's control was too much for us to be able to get back into the game. Not much Kane can do when we spend 45 minutes just booting it out from defence because we were pinned back.

Unfortunate choosing of tactics considering how well he was playing and keeping the ball.

I thought this was an obvious problem in the semis, but today it wasn't that different. In the 2nd half, I felt like Kane stayed up front more, but there was no one to pass it to him (except maybe mount, occasionally). Would it be possible to field Kane and Calvert-Lewin at the same time?

Also, southgate needs to go, any manager that has Grealish on the bench needs to go

No kid should have that pressure put on him. I don't think Rashford has that much experience either..?

Rashford used to the main Man Utd kicker then Bruno Fernandes transferred and took over As for Saka, Im assuming the more senior players didnt want to be the next Southgate

They replaced two 30 year Olds that would be on PK duty anywhere else on the planet.

Strikers are rarely to blame in these games, England set up defensively he was in his own half most of the time, nothing much he could do.

Based on those statistics from prior shootouts Saka, Rashford and Sancho were fine choices. The difference in success rates between situations where scoring wins (92% probability to score) and not scoring loses (62% probability to score) is crazy high. I get that the pressure to score must be insane when you can lose it all, but the fact that success rate is higher for kicks where you can win it all compared to other pens is also surprising to me. I would've thought there would be extra pressure on that shot too.

Saka seems like a crazy pick in the sense that he's 19 at the moment. He has probably played more high level football on empty stadiums than with crowds at this point. Maybe Southgate knows the player better or something, but 19-year-old me definitely would have been a deer in the headlights in a situation like that. Other than that, Hendo, Walker and Shaw definitely seemed potential picks. They've all been through some of the toughest mental pressures available for footballers. As long as their legs weren't completely noodled at 120, I'd definitely have them in my shortlist. Calvert-Lewin feels like an option too, although he had less than 20 minutes in the tournament before the final. That being said, redo the penalties with same players again and we might be talking about Southgate's brilliant picks right now. There's also plently of stuff we simply don't know about training, player mentality and all that. Tough stuff for Southgate.

England started so well the first half and I was thinking maybe they deserve to win after all. Southgate fucked it up big time lol. Curious about the media headlines today. GG to Italy, best Zerg and best football team in Europe. Well done
