Right now the betting odds for Ukraine - Austria are heavily leaning towards draw, since that gives Ukraine a 2nd place finish and Austria a good setup for 3rd place qualification. I guess some scenarios always exist regardless of the format, but it still find it a tad boring that a 3rd place finish is something teams can willingly take without bigger complaints. But finishing 3rd place still risk missing out. The other 3rd place teams may finish with 4 points and positive goal differential (or higher). Also, what most people tend to forget about Portugal in 2016 was that they were playing in Group F and knew that a draw for sure was enough to let them advance. Yes, that's another unfair advantage in the system right there - teams in the later groups having knowledge of how the other groups fared and knowing what result exactly to secure. For example, in this Euro, imagine if Swiss was playing Group F and knew that 4 points with negative differential isn't enough - they would push hard for another goal or two to secure second place or edge over the next 3rd place team.

Arranging 1v4 for the last round is risking a dead rubber. But seems like the scheduling for first and second round is randomised? Why would the last round be fixed but not the rest? Also, the seedings is ridiculous. FIFA rankings should be factored in, or maybe UEFA Nations League results. There's some luck factor in the arrangement of groups (some easier, some harder).

-6 groups of 4 as usual. -Top 3 teams from groups A-D advance. Top 2 from groups E+F. -For the draw, pots for A-D and E+F are separated, but there are ofc 4 pots each. The idea now is this: Teams pick their pot they want to be seeded in in order of ranking. So the first team can pick whether they want to be in pot AD1 or EF1. Then the second team will pick etc. Starting with the 5th seeded team (assuming teams 1-4 each pick AD1 as their pot), teams will have to decided whether they want to be a lower seed in a groups where 3 team advance, or a higher seed in a group where 2 teams advance. No inter-group-comparisons necessary to determine advancement, and no team can complain that they were drawn into a 2-teams-advance group (excep possibly the lowest seeded teams, but hey, should have played better in the past). Obviously this is never going to happen, but could be a theoretical improvement to improve on some of the current issues.

Wijnaldum is just the cherry on the cake, but he is also Acrofales captain! So him scoring is actually bad for me, when we talk about #1 (but still I prefer him to score)

You do realise that seeding like this should maximise the number of meaningless games if done correctly? If the last round is 1st v 2nd they are both expected to be at two wins, battling it only for seeding to the next round. 3rd v 4th may have some elimination threat in it if certain 3rd place teams can advance, but for example in the world cup system that would be a game with literally no influence to how the tournament goes. The current system at least manages to make almost every game relevant. Only the current North Macedonia v Netherlands is completely mathematically insignificant to the rest of the tournament, which to me looks like very good argument in favour of this type of seeding.

Congratz! Probably the worst performance by Ukraine in a while, I had a feeling they've never tried to score a goal. Plus weird subs, this was something weird We don't deserve to be in a play-off after this game ![]()

If Finland loses, a 2:1 or better should give them 2nd place... If Finland somehow gets a point vs Belgium, a 2+ victory would still give Denmark a 3rd place finish which beats out Ukraine, so a good chance to advance...
