So that's like a team World Cup every year? Can you imagine having teams from different regions playing Super League and domestic league at the same time? Travelling from Spain to Belgium is easy, but flying from Europe to LATAM takes too much time/resources in comparison

You know as much as I dislike Perez and think he is a delusional clown: at least he has the balls to keep saying something for this ridiculous idea of the super league.

Real Madrid is not the only club part of this. There are 11 other clubs who are part of this and yet he is the only one speaking. ManUtd and Juve bosses who were actually part of the biggest betrayals have said nothing

It's slightly different roles I think. Glazers have never really been involved with footballing matters, they literally just run ManU the corporation, whereas my understanding is that Perez has always been a lot more hands on.

The Juve chairman said at a meeting of the heads of football clubs in Italy that he didnt care if Juventus played in the Italian league or not and got called a Judas by the head of Torino. Read that not too long ago on a Serbian news site.

Really, the only ones that can stop this are the politicians in the respective countries.

EDIT: and its on the last page here too haha

I wonder what will eventually happen here. It seems the backlash has been much stronger than the founders anticipated, a PR disaster to be honest. And it's hard to find anyone backing the idea: other clubs, fans, FAs, even governments. So what does everyone think, will there actually be a Super League?

Poll: Will the Super League ever come to be?

(Vote): Yes
(Vote): No, they'll drop it themselves
(Vote): No, they'll be forced to drop it (by governments etc)
(Vote): Other...

There will be some super shitty agreement, where UEFA and the clubs extract even more money than they did with the just announced CL reform.
Then UEFA and the clubs will be buddies and the rest will be fucked. The real Judas in this will be the UEFA.

They will now use everyone else opposing this, pretend to lead the movement and then flip sides.

Leaked plans for the European Super League show an unprecedented effort to cap spiralling player wages and share wealth between football’s richest clubs.

The measures, which range from revenue-sharing arrangements to strict spending limits, have been confirmed by the Financial Times and closely resemble the structure of top US sports leagues.

A dozen top clubs including England’s Manchester United, Spain’s Real Madrid and Italy’s AC Milan, have signed up to join the breakaway contest that threatens to shatter the existing power structures in the world’s most-watched sport.

Despite uproar among fans, European politicians and football pundits, the Super League clubs are pushing ahead with a project they believe will raise upwards of €4bn a season from global broadcasting and sponsorship rights. That figure is roughly double that of the Champions League, the continent’s top club contest, which the Super League is designed to supersede.

According to those familiar with the plans, the 15 “founding clubs” of the Super League would share 32.5 per cent of these commercial revenues. A further 32.5 per cent would be distributed between all 20 participating teams, including the five sides invited to play in the competition each year. Twenty per cent of revenues would be allocated on “merit” or be dependent on performance in the competition. The final 15 per cent would be shared based on broadcast audience size.

A person directly involved in the deal said the distribution model ensured the competition winner would receive just 1.5 times more than the bottom side. By comparison, that ratio in Spain’s La Liga is closer to 3.5 times. However, clubs will be also allowed to retain all revenues from gate receipts and club sponsorship deals.

The model is closer in design to North American sports leagues such as the National Basketball Association and National Football League, in which franchises strike joint commercial agreements, and use collective bargaining agreements with players and other measures to level the playing field.

Those competitions are “closed”, meaning that teams are guaranteed their place every year, ensuring reliable revenues and steady profits for owners.

But the Super League structure represents a fundamental break with how European football has been governed for years, with its “pyramid” structure that ensures any team, through on-pitch success, can reach for the top prizes.

Many of the Super League’s main architects, such as Manchester United, Liverpool and AC Milan have US owners, while the €3.25bn launch cost is financed by a debt deal underwritten by US investment bank JPMorgan Chase.

Yet the driving force behind the project is Florentino Pérez, Real Madrid’s president who has been named chair of the Super League. He has pointed to the financial crisis at top clubs, many of which have suffered steep revenue shortfalls due to the pandemic and are heavily indebted, saying in a Spanish TV interview that they “are ruined”.

Another common feature of US franchises is strict spending limits. Super League clubs have committed to using only 55 per cent of their revenues on “sport spending”, such as player salaries, transfer and agent fees, according to people familiar with the terms. European clubs typically spend 70 to 80 per cent of their income on footballers’ wages alone.

Super League clubs have also signed up to a “tax equalisation” clause so that “income tax on salaries shall be normalised and calculated at a rate of 45 per cent”, according to people with direct knowledge of the contracts. This would ensure clubs in Spain, where footballers pay a higher top rate of tax than in Italy or England, are not at a competitive disadvantage when the spending limits are assessed.

The documents add that Super League clubs must have “positive trailing earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation and net profit”. This is intended to break with the past dynamic, where many clubs, particularly those with rich owners, have racked up huge losses to acquire the best players in the pursuit of silverware.

The Super League declined to comment on the numbers, but said its model was based on higher “solidarity” payments to smaller teams and an effort to create a “sustainable model for the whole of the football pyramid”.

I think this will go horribly wrong and i'm looking forward to it. It's a detachment from huge parts of the fanbase, good luck with that.

This from the Guardian:

The European Super League has been dealt a further blow with Amazon taking the unusual step of publicly criticising the proposed competition, which effectively rules the streaming giant out as a potential international broadcast partner.

“Amazon Prime Video understands and shares the concerns raised by football fans regarding a breakaway Super League,” the company said. “We believe part of the drama and beauty of European football comes from the ability of any club to achieve success through their performance on the pitch.”

Amazon, which streams live Champions League matches in Germany and Italy and Premier League games in the UK, also made it clear its allegiance lies with existing rights holders and leagues. The move by Amazon, which has 150m users of Prime Video globally and recently splashed out $1bn on NFL rights, rules out an important potential partner for the Super League.

“We have not been involved in any discussions for this proposed Super League,” Amazon said. “We are proud to offer our Prime members the football which matters most to them.”

I wonder if this means anything though. Would the SL even be interested in a partnership with an online streaming platform? I mean if you launch a new and hyper-commercial sports league in 2021, surely you want your own streaming platform to cash in on the full amount of money from subscribers.

The question will be, once they go off , will the Asian markets compensate for the losses from the domestic fans ?
Who is sponsoring this mega league ? they talked about 3.5B to be distributed between the teams , who is paying for that ? and will the body get its money back ?

We have billions of casual fans around the world watching football and they dont care about the lower leagues in england or grass root or any of that , they dont care about the scotish league or the sweedish league , they just care about the big clubs, for them this is a dream come true (or at least on paper) , and this is who will be monitized from this move , the fans that build those clubs , their history their success , those are few when you compare the global fan base of those teams now days , and as sad as it is , the fact they were allowed to be sold to the highest bidder , made it an investment like any other for those owners , at least in germany , the fans are still the owners (although i am not sure how that works .... but i assume its better then whats happening in england for example).

The Guardian’s Jessica Elgot asks what is Boris Johnson’s own view on the German model of ownership (50+1) which gives fans a controlling stake in their clubs?

Johnson says it’s a matter for the minister for sport Tracey Crouch to address in her review and he is of the opinion that she is impressed by those models.

Well I'll be damned. Someone previously praised Crouch in this thread, but this would be absolutely amazing for English as well as European football.

How would she do it though? UK would buy the shares?
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

Meh, five million fans each give one hundred pounds, thats five hundred million right there. Though I'm positive each of the big clubs can get 500.000 to pay one thousand to buy in. I'm sure there are quite a few that would give more than the cost of a season ticket to get in.
