+ Show Spoiler [ Inter Miami sponsorship] +
Inter Miami CF, the new South Florida soccer team owned in part by David Beckham, has reportedly reached a $234 million sponsorship deal with the state-owned airline of Qatar — a deal could have the uniforms and a new Miami stadium emblazoned with the name of an Arab state where homosexuality can bring a seven-year prison sentence, or even death if the offender is Muslim.

While a deal with state-owned Qatar Airways has not been officially announced, it is already drawing criticism.

“I find it problematic,” said Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Steve Glassman. “Let’s be honest. South Florida is home to a significant Jewish population and a very significant LGBT population. So when you bring in a country like Qatar, if you do your research, you find that Qatar is very hostile to those two communities.”

Glassman brought up his qualms about Qatar Airways sponsoring the team in Tuesday’s city commission conference meeting. Although Inter Miami’s permanent home will be in Miami, the team will play at least its first two seasons at the site of old Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, which will eventually serve as the team’s training facility and the site of a youth soccer camp.

Glassman said he was unsure whether the city commission would be able to affect the sponsorship deal, but that he wanted “an adult conversation with Inter Miami.”

“With all the options out there in the world, we’re settling on Qatar as sponsors? I’m just uncomfortable with the identification of that nation as a sponsor of this team,” Glassman said. “It puts a damper on what would otherwise be a great celebration for the city.”

An Inter Miami team spokesperson said, “We are in the middle of final conversations with several potential partners and will make an announcement in the near future."

Unlike most Arab nations, Qatar does allow visits from Israel under most circumstances, but an expected influx of Israelis for the 2022 World Cup set for Qatar, and the absence of Israel from a long list of countries from which visas would be welcome, raised concerns that people from the Jewish state would be denied entry.

Hassan al-Thawadi, secretary-general of the Supreme Committee for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, told ESPN in late December that “Everyone is welcome. We do not mix sport and politics, but we would hope that Palestinians are able to make it too.”

Al-Thawadi also discouraged LGBT visitors from kissing in public, saying his nation disapproves of public displays of affection.

Although the nation is prepared to accept Israelis for the World Cup, the two nations have severed diplomatic ties and the state-controlled Qatari media is rife with examples of anti-Semitism, according to the Anti-Defamation League. In a Dec. 4 press release calling on the U.S. embassy in Doha to denounce a government-sponsored book fair in the capital city, the ADL noted that among the books at the fair were titles such as “Lies Spread by the Jews” and “The Myth of the Nazi Gas Chambers.”

Qatari government officials removed the books from the fair after the U.S. ambassador protested.

I guess they will become Qatar Airways Miami instead of Inter after the Milan court decision?

It didn't take long for the old Mourinho to resurface.

edit: Just reading catching up. Footballers are becoming actual world class athletes on top of the skill these days.

Getafe bringing with themselves to Europe all the shithousery they are infamous for in la liga. They are really a very dirty team. But anyway, their coach is doing wonders for their small buget. They are terrible passing the ball, put they put a high and intense pressure too. I wonder if Ajax will be able to adapt to that style of play.

I had muted the stream and was only half paying attention to it. Suddenly it seemed like MU were playing much better. Then I noticed Bruno had been subbed on and realised why.

What happened? Ajax losing 0-2 away against the third place la liga team doesn't strike me as odd..

It does, Ajax are one of the favourites for the competition....That is like saying you expected Valencia to lose 4-1 to Atalanta last night...after going toe to toe with Chelsea and Ajax in their group lol.

I didn't expect a 4-1, but fourth placed team in Serie A beating 7th placed team in La Liga also doesn't strike me as odd.. Home advantage is huge in european competitions, and I would always assume that a team good enough to be third place in La Liga after 24 games is also good enough to potentially win the Europa League.. Getafe has had a very solid season - they're ahead of both just-beat-liverpool-atletico and bookies-favorite-to-win-EL-Sevilla. Ajax is still a good team obviously, but they've lost both de ligt and de jong from last year - and they're not a team able to replace world class players just like that..

I was almost sure Getafe would get a good result today. They are in their best shape of the season and Ajax is not good against that style of play (same thing happened to them against Valencia at home in the CL stage groups).

Barcelona had to work very very hard last week to win against Getafe.

Getafe manager is so inexperienced in European football or even football at the elite level, let alone the whole club itself as well...they are in good form in a league where the top two are back to running away with it thanks to Simeone's Atletico being utter trash this season but somehow embarassed Liverpool a couple of nights ago lol.

Serie A also is a league known for Juventus walking it until this season where Inter Milan invested a lot of money into their squad and Immobilie being in crazy goal scoring form banging them into the top spots too. Atalanta somehow have joined that and are playing well, but again are not used to huge pressured European knockout games to a team like Valencia who have played in lots of them over the last decade haha.

Would you be favouring Wolves over Espanyol as well? Because they are doing well in the premier league and Espanyol are not? Even though Espanyol have a lot more experience in Europe than Wolves have in their history lol.

It was more feelings than rankings for me. I've watched often Ajax this season and they are not expectacular after all the players that left. And this is stressed against teams that shithouse, make fools, interrupt the game, leave no spaces, press high and play direct, etc. Valencia played the same against them and they could not find a solution and stepped in all their traps for 90 minutes.

And Getafe are better than Valencia doing that, they are like the club version of the Uruguay NT right now. I just didn't expect Ajax to adapt their gameplay enough to deal with it.

The point is that it's all really close. A 2-0 for getafe isn't surprising. 1-1 wouldn't be either. Football results have to deviate a lot from the normal before they are surprising. But yeah if I were to place a bet prior to the match I guess I'd have gone with 2-1 getafe or something?

I most definitely expect wolves to beat espanyol at home with espanyol being last place in la liga and wolves being a top 6-7 contender, yeah. European experience is a factor, but how good shape your team is in is a more significant one.

Ajax is in a bad run of form currently and have had a slew of injuries the past couple of months. Ziyech and Blind (best players) have just returned from injuries and Ziyech played an awful match, especially first half.

They've played spectacular matches this season (the away game vs Chelsea before they got fucked by the refs was a good example), but around december we lost 3 wingers (Neres, Promes and Labyad) which pretty much destroyed our attacking threat. While Tadic and Ziyech are good players, they don't have depth. Both are more assisting players. With Neres and Promes out, that leaves only Van de Beek who has depth. The attack is much easier to defend thus we have trouble scoring against organized defences. So key injuries vs Valencia and now Getafe is mostly the problem. Last season we've had hardly any key injuries during the season.

That coupled with the fact that Blind and Ziyech are just returning so are not really match-fit and some other injuries (Veltman) means we haven't started in the same formation for a couple of months now, so the play is much less fluid.

Getafe frustrating play to such an extent that the match had a pure gametime of 42 minutes (instead of 90), the abovementioned issues and Perr Schuurs running ahead like a headless chicken in injury time means we lose 0-2 to an in-form cohesive unit of diving Spaniards. Babel was hilarious though, imitating the diving Nyom:

https://www.dumpert.nl/item/7846699_0973850a

And yeah you can't compare the injury free team of last year with de Jong, de Ligt and Schöne to this year. Mind you, television rights income of Norwich City and Watford is bigger than Ajax' entire budget, so replacements are always a significant factor inferior (especially in experience) to the starting line-up.
