overpayed in relation to who? Jimmy Makes 27.5 a year. Stafford makes 27, Cousins makes 28, Wentz makes 32, Dak will make 30-32, and Goff makes 33.5 Jimmy G is above average qb,but not wlite. Still, hes doing better than the other qb's in his price range. If anything, you are making the argument that Jimmy G is clearly underpaid at 67.0% of passes completed 5,699, total yards 37 td 18ints and a 98.9 QB rating which is better than all other QB's on that list.
Compared to his value on his team, much like all the others. It was original point that everyone but the top 5 QB's are not worth the money they are making. Better to have a slightly worse QB at 1/3 the money and a better roster around them.
In theory I agree, but the only cheap QB1s on teams with good records tend to be on their rookie contracts.
It takes a lot of courage to trust a journeyman to be QB1 if you have super bowl ambitions. There are plenty of good rosters who are held back by their QB1.
Its true, I just think at this point if your guy is not top 5 your better off trading him getting value, making your roster great with the extra picks and looking in the draft for that guy who is findable out of the top 10 picks.
QB seems to be different than other positions in that regard. I can think of the Josh Rosen, Alex Smith and Garoppolo trades, but their previous teams did not land that much value for them and they were traded because there were other QB1s on the roster already.
When was the last time a QB was traded for multiple high picks, including a 1st?
I guess picking a QB almost every year hoping to always have a starter on their rookie contract is an option, but you can't really build your team round your QB that way.
Or u run into a Ryan Tanihill type situation where u have a good QB who was on a bad team (Dolphins), gets traded (Titans), Titans QB gets benched (Mariota), and you end up with a solid starting QB for 1/2 the price
Dak is not the problem with the Cowboys this year. His completion percentage is 4.7% higher than the expected completion percentage of his passes. That's 5th in the NFL. He's been pretty accurate this year. He's the one carrying the offense. Well, other than the OL, of course.
Elliott is not really living up to his contract. It's funny that some people wanted a running back to be paid but think teams should go cheap on a qb. That's a recipe for disaster there. If the Cowboys could've only paid one of them, it should be Dak.
There are several problems with the whole trade a non top5 thing. One is that the returned value is low. if he’s not good enough to resign he’s not netting a first. Best case scarnior is a couple seconds which will be gambles.
Most teams don’t have 2 NFL starting caliber qbs so that also means you need to get your guy in the draft or FA. And that saved money needs to put to use immediately or it has no value. Again if those players aren’t already on the teams the gm needs to beat out every other team in the draft or fa.
It’s a shiton of variables beyond just hoping the new guy is a good fit. That’s why teams will more often than not resign top 15 qbs
