Is the rule completely removed? I recall some Football Manager 2014 still having some kind of homegrown requirement for EL, but can't find a mention on the actual EL 2018 ruleset.
Did they drop it completely recently or is it just lax to have noticeable effect?
In Europe you can't have more than 3 non-European players. But a lot of South American players get a secondary passport and clubs can bypass that rule. They also have a rule that says that each squad should have at least 8 locally trained players. Out of these 8, you can have up to 4 that were trained in your country, not directly in your club. And if you don't get 8, you cannot have the 25 players squad, you get less. I'm not sure if it works exactly this way, but say you have 7 locally trained players, you can only register 24 players in total.
So 8/25, you can put your youth players and never have to call them for a game x)
The bolded part ain't true. Some leagues enforce this rule. But not all leagues do so (e.g. Bundesliga does not) and in European competitions you also can have as many as you can fit in there as long as you fulfill the homegrown rules.
The Europa League almost by definition is a losers bracket to the Champions League. But that doesn't make it less meaningful. It is what it is. Before they made the winners go into the Champiosn League it was pretty pointless. The English teams really couldn't give a fuck if they ended up in it. But now smaller teams get to play against bigger teams (albeit ones that have done badly this year) knowing that the big teams value the competition and are trying to win. That is a great yard stick and opportunity for the smaller clubs to measure themselves aginst and just a great ocasion for them they were largely unlikely to have without it. Europa League is never going to be box office but I think all in all it is a good thing.
By the way I haven't read anything about the considered introduction of a third tournament. So I have nothing to add about the main topic of disccusion here. I have no idea what that would look like or if its a good idea. It might be grasping at straws though. Mid level teams from all across Europe playing each other sounds interesting. But Premier League teams are likely to focus on the league and play reserves. Even just the risk of dropping a few points and getting close to the relegation zone because you focussed on mid week third string European competition would not be a risk any Premier League club would be willing to take. But other leagues might have a more posertive outlook on it. Different clubs will have a different perspective.
There has been a third tier competition in the past, the Intertoto Cup, which was a bit of an abherration as it was played over the Summer and most competitive teams felt it screwed up their pre-season.
The Intertoto was more like an extra Preliminary Round for the UEFA Cup tho. Who knows, maybe this new cup will be for teams that end up 3rd place in the EL groupstage lol.
He managed to get really passionate about that. Do International managers really do that much youth development? Surely that's more on their domestic teams and coaches?
Burnley only have 1 point from 4 games and look really tired. There will be a few Burnley fans that will be happy they are out of the Europe and they can focus on the league again. It's too early to say they are in trouble. But clubs like that are never going to make a second tier or even third tier European competition their focus over staying in the Premier League and keeping the TV money.

I can't watch the NHL any longer. There is no room on the ice. The goalies are so big that less and less often are they forced to make spectacular looking saves; the goalie equipment is so big. They just cover the angle and let the puck hit them. ZZZzzzz. There is so little 5 on 5 scoring. Improving skate technology and improving training have made the players so fast the line between a good play and a catastrophic concussion is so thin head injuries are too frequent. Too many head injuries, players too big for an ice surface designed for guys to be 6 feet tall at most... too few goals.. and boring goalie play have killed the NHL game for me.
for me, Women's Olympic Ice Hockey and Women's world championship ice hockey is more entertaining than the NHL.

Yes I am aware, but isnt it equally sexist to shit on mens Hockey if you are going to infer sexism from WIlly's comment hmm hmm hmm ?

how is that sexist? willywankers comments werent sexist either. nothing wrong with saying women are worse than men at most sports; thats just fact. likewise theres nothing wrong with saying mens nhl is boring now and womens ice hockey seems more entertaining. absolutely nothing sexist about either of those comments
Spurs vs Liverpool to kick off the return of premier league! Should be a good game, Scouse should win comfortably though as our Spurs friends are without Lloris, Alli and Kane is not in form. Unless Moura goes super sayian like he did vs Yanited i cannot see anything other than a comfortable scouse win!
Haha justice for last year maybe (the pen for spurs that is), but Spurs way to slow starting and Dier midfield combination is awful. The team that ended the game should start the next one.
Salah can't hit a barn door at the moment either, he had a handful of chances today that he finishes last season and he barely got a decent connection of the ball let alone work the keeper.
