It is kind of the same thou? To me it is as it always was, a lost week where one could be watching the PL.

I mentioned it to some friends the other day, i would much rather say in December or January we get a 4 week break and then we have 4-5 games international break there before summer. That way leagues get "rest" and football isn't as bad

Yes, I would prefer to watch la Liga or PL this week. But it is slightly less annoying if I can see Spain England and Spain Croatia instead of friendlies.

Nooo national team games are the best! You guys need more national pride!

Finland beat Hungary 1-0 with excellent performance. Last 5 years or so have been mostly negative & timid football, but this game the team looked really determined and at times almost too bold. I don't think I've had so much fun watching the national team ever before. Hope they keep up the good work.

France is destroying us right now. 1-0 now but looking super dominant

Yeah, first half was a disaster but they didn't have that many clear chances, so defensively it was quite alright, until that blunder by Promes :|
Second half was a lot better, only watched until the 1-1 though. Frenkie de Jong was magical considering it was his debut as a starter, future of the Dutch national team looks bright when we have talents like his emerging.

Newest UEFA highlights: - discussing holding the CL final in New York - adding a 3rd tier of european club competitions for 32 teams from 2021/22 on, while reducing the number of teams in the EL from 48 to 32. This decision will be finalized until end of the year.
|
I'd say get rid of the EL altogether and just replace it with the "loser bracket" of an expanded CL (it's what unofficially is nowadays anyway)
|
I don't get the point of these cups tbh. I don't even like the EL, it's basically a losers cup. What are you really winning if you win the EL? It means you're worse than 16 other European teams at least (the CL ro16 ones).
On top of that, the competition is skewed after the groups when 'bad' CL teams get to destroy 'good' EL teams. Is it just so that smaller teams get to play other European teams? Why not make some kind of longer qualifier with more teams before the CL, and have the top teams join later (kinda like national cups)? This way it's just one competition, more teams get to play but we're not fed 2 useless competitions that big teams don't even care about.
At least when the CL was only the 1st of each league, and they had the Cups Winner Cup it made some kind of sense. When you won, you really were a champion of something.

that might be how people cheering for top teams from the top 4 leagues feel. Myself I care more about tuning in for thursday matches than tuesday-wednesday matches now, because that's when Rosenborg plays. And there's a lot of money in the EL compared to how it used to be - simply qualifying for it now ends up doubling our yearly budget. I think it's great the way it is personally and see no reason to add another league.
To me, the alternative would be having some type of policies to break down the powerhouse teams so teams from Norway could hope to qualify for the CL again, or to have teams like Ajax be able to win the CL, but I don't think that's gonna happen. The EL gives the best teams from smaller leagues something legit to compete for, and that's important.

Winner of uefa tournament 3 gets spot in europe league following season be nice i guess. I don't mind that, the 48 team europa league was annoying so to mess that down to 32 teams is better all round too. Not sure a whole 32 team 3rd competition would be any good though. One, when does it get played? Champions league has to get played over two days or you just get 0 profit from sponsorship/tv deals as you cannot watch all the games at same time properly. Thursday is Europa league day...so Monday? Play it same time as Europa League? Play it Friday idk? Be weird and hard to fit in no?

To me, the Champions League past the quarter finals feels like FIFA demo mode.... eight playable teams which bore you to death after a couple of days. I'd much rather watch a Braga vs Dynamo Kyiv than another Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich. I think it's great for fans of the smaller teams, it's great for the general geographical knowledge of Europeans, and it's refreshing for casual fans. The concentration of wealth in football increased quality at the top tier but has killed much of the fun around continental football.
The idea of matches like Belenenses vs Hibernian in the 3rd UEFA tier sounds pretty awesome to me.

Reality check for Croatia at the moment? XD

I like that Luis Enrique is finally playing Saul, he was ignored so much by previous managers. He is so vertical and direct. If only he could fix his relationship with Jordi Alba...
