David Beckham and his partners took another step toward securing a Major League Soccer team in Miami, revealing to league owners late Tuesday that their group has added billionaire Todd Boehly to help finance the project, according to a source familiar with the discussions.

Boehly is an American investment banker who is part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and chairman of Eldridge Industries, which counts among its holdings Hollywood Reporter and Billboard magazines and Dick Clark Productions.

The Beckham-led Miami MLS deal has been dragging on for more than three years, and league Commissioner Don Garber and other owners are getting increasingly frustrated.

One of the holdups was finding significant, reliable financial backing for the project, which is expected to top $300 million between stadium construction and the team startup. The involvement of Boehly should give Beckham’s group more credibility with MLS owners, who must approve the deal.

The MLS Board of Governors met in Colorado Springs on Tuesday to discuss a variety of topics, one of them being the Beckham ownership situation. No vote was taken, but the board will be reviewing the terms of the deal, and Boehly’s involvement, in the coming days. A vote is expected in the near future.

Garber said last Friday that a decision “has to be made this year,” or they will look elsewhere.

As part of Beckham’s contract when he joined the Los Angeles Galaxy as a player, he was promised a deeply-discounted franchise upon retirement. He reportedly will pay $25 million for a team, while owners of other new teams are paying $150 million. MLS is counting on Beckham’s international celebrity status to raise the global profile of the league. As owner of a team in Miami, his reach into Latin America is viewed as a valuable asset.

“I believe in the Miami market,” Garber said in New York City at a meeting with several of the nation’s sports editors. “There’s never been a successful international market that wasn’t a successful MLS market.”

But, he said, Beckham’s group had yet to fulfill the requirements necessary to have an MLS franchise – proper financing, a viable stadium plan in place and a solid ownership group.

Miami Beckham United — the name of the soccer icon’s investment group -- is backed by Beckham and partners Marcelo Claure (CEO of Sprint) and Simon Fuller (Beckham’s agent and a creator of “American Idol”). Boehly is now the fourth heavy hitter.

Tadd Schwartz, the Miami-based spokesman of the group, declined comment Wednesday night, but a statement may be released on Thursday.

Beckham announced his plans to bring MLS to Miami in February 2014. The plan has since fizzled at three would-be sites and a parcel of the current site in Overtown is still being negotiated.

In the meantime, Atlanta and Minnesota franchises joined MLS this season, and a 23rd team is scheduled for 2018 in Los Angeles.

You must feel for Darlington fans. Darlington are currently back up to the 6th tier of English football after the previous owners bankrupted themselves building a 25,000 seater stadium ready for highly ambitious Premier League football. They did not follow up the spending on the pitch got relegated out of the Football League and eventually folded.

This week they have been denied a place in the playoffs because their new home doesn't have 500 covered seats the minimum required to play fifth tier football apparently. Ironic that their stadium is now too small.

article

Something wrong with the world when you have a football club denied a chance at promotion and a completely useless 25,000 seater stadium just down the road in a pretty small North East town.

Meh, not a great first half so far. Lot of tension, united lacking in midfield, fellaini and mkhi having little success on the ball. Bailly, Blind and Herrera playing decent though. City having a lot more possession, but very few chances. Defense looks shaky at times, Otamendi can only win duels by fighting and lacks speed. Solid midfield though.

Who was injured in midfield for United? Mata and Pogba right? I can't believe with all the money United have they fielded a midfield of Fellaini, Carrick and Herrera :/

United played like West Brom today, with the most expensive squad in the world. What a disappointing game!

top 4 battle is fucking tense lol. I think Liverpool is the team that would, before the season, be least unhappy with 5th, but they've been up there the entire season so now it'd feel like a massive failure. United kinda the other way around - before the season 5th place would be horrible, but with the start being so terrible and the EC route to CL still being there, it might be kind of acceptable now. For Arsenal, always getting top 4 has been the one thing they've had going. And Guardiola doing worse than his predecessor would be a pretty big failure. Then to be fair, he's on pace to get like, 10 points more than they did last season, just that 66 was enough for top 4 then, now you prolly need 76.. I don't even know who I'm cheering for tbh.

ManU came on the pitch to get a daw and they got it, Mourinho's classic bus.

I don't think Carrick has been up to par for the big matches in all honesty. Takes too long on the ball and is rarely the metronome he used to be in the past. Herrera is fine, I only mentioned him because he was part of the midfield lol. Probably should have rephrased my comment.

Looks like it's going to be surprisingly exciting end season in England. Tottenham still has some kind of claim for the title fight and top 4 is looking crowded as ever.

Huge North London Derby this weekend, Spurs need to win to keep up the pressure, Arsenal need to win to keep their hopes of getting top 4.

Somehow that Europe League path to UCL seems really scary for United in my books. It just seems like a setup for some David vs Goliath matchup where United collapses under the pressure to some some dramatic late goal. Anderlecht already took Utd to extra time. That's one unlucky bounce or one-in-a-million cannonball away from getting eliminated.

thats why ive been saying no matter how tough the remaining fixtures are, United shoudl always prioritse the EPL simply because a cup run is always packed with variables that no one can prepare for. On the other hand as I was typing this its dawning to me that United this season under Mou, much like most teams hes coached, has been bloodly good at not losing which is a key factor to win playoffs. Iono though I dont care if we win this Europa or Trump accidentally wipes out London while trying to bomb NK, as long as we make it to next year CL im sold.
