The Bisping fight makes the least sense. GSP has never fought middleweight. Conor was at least a 2 division champion and current FW champ before he fought Alvarez.
I think GSP is one of the greatest if not the greatest of all time, but to fight at a weight class above that he constantly dodged for years makes 0 sense and its for the title rofl. Just admit it, this is a win win for GSP, Bisping and the WME.
I'd rather he stay at WW fighting anyone in the top 5 which includes people like Lawlor and Condit.
Like I agree with you that it's a good option for all the listed parties involved, but I don't think it's farfetched, I think it's less controversial than have Bisping fight Henderson for example.
Personally I think the most appropriate thing would be to have GSP fight for the WW title. In the same way that when JBJ is coming back he's going to be fighting the champ (even when GSP left there was no bad blood, as a plus).
I think fighting a top contender like Demian Maia doesn't make sense, one, it's super all-in and I don't think he'd agree, since a loss there would be super costly to your career, and two, I don't think it pays respect to a champ who's lost one fight in 9 years. Especially a guy who's claiming he's training all the time and such, he doesn't think the rust will affect him. Plus, it makes a lot less money, all the polls I looked at online had most people wanting him to face Bisping > Tyron > McGregor > Nick Diaz > Anderson Silva.
McGregor would screw up too many plans, Anderson Silva has lost a lot of hype due to his performances (being way past prime, and his drug test and current attitude in the media haven't been a help imo), and Nick Diaz idk, I wasn't too into strikeforce, so Nick Diaz hype is a bit of a mystery to me. Either way, from my viewpoint, the only two logical fights were winner of UFC 209 and Bisping. In middleweight you have 3 strong contenders for the belt, it's stupid to get Bisping to fight all of them, let them fight it out, and have the champ fight them.
Don't get me wrong, it's still disruptive to the division, but probably equally or evel less disruptive than to WW. Welterweight after Maia fights we have a clear #1 contender, while at MW you have 3 contenders, and it's unfair to have Bisping for him to have to fight them all.
edit: As for Lawler, he should fight Cerrone imo, and Korean Zombie vs Carlos Condit revenge match. Good way to move the division forward imo.

GSP hasn't fought in 3 years, will be 36 when he returns and he tore his other ACL while on his hiaitus. You're right he lost one fight in 9 years but don't forget his last fight where he won a split decision and every single media site had Hendricks winning. At least Henderson fights at MW and we can all agree that it was a freebie fight for Bisping since it's pretty much assumed he would lose the next one if it was against a legit contender. Henderson also KTFO Bisping at 100.
Letting Maia fight for the title after 209 would let GSP fight in a #1 contender match with Lawlor who is ranked 2. Cerrone shouldn't be fighting the #2 guy after he lost to Mazvidal. This would set GSP up for a fight in 2018 against Maia/Wonderboy/Woodley. Condit is nowhere to be found afaik.
Jones is way younger than GSP and is still in his physical prime so he can jump right back in. Of course GSP would say that hes not rusty and in shape etc... The better comparison would be with Cruz who was out for a similar amount of time. When he came back, he didnt fight Jose Aldo or the BW champ.
You say this is normal but it really isn't. GSP can go fight Bisping if he wasn't the champ. No problem.

It is the right business decision ofc. If GSP wins they go for WW belt next for another big fight. If he loses well one weight class higher with such a long layoff. Win Win while Bisping gets a big payday.
They try and build up stars now like in boxing matchmaking instead of just letting the best fighting each other.

Ferguson acknowledged he had a great difficulty making 155 lbs as well. So we have 2 guys who can, at best, barely make weight as top contenders. As you get older it gets harder and harder to cut weight. Will either of these guys still be in the division in 2 years?

I don't think the "No IV" thing is as strictly enforced as it is in Nevada in other places. That's my gut feeling. Otherwise, I think everyone "big" would start moving up one division. Probably, they think, "Okay, I fight 155 here, and I know my opponent can't use the IV to re-hydrate, but if I go to X, I *know* they're using an IV, so I don't want to risk going up to 170." so a lot of the guys' divisions are going to have a bunch of guys killing themselves to make weight and not being able to re-hydrate properly for awhile.
The womens' divisions are a bit different, but there is an issue of 135 being either way too big or way too small. Nobody wants to move up to 145 because Cyborg. Everyone is scared of her right now. But there is no 125 division (which actually has a big talent pool outside of the UFC) for the women in the UFC for those too small for 135 but too big for 115.

interesting theory. i thought they test for some kind of things that end up in your blood after taking an IV. So that, you could get away with an IV if you used a glass bottle instead of a plastic IV bag.
