Pretty good card overall, I did miss all the fights before the Vannata one though.
Barboza vs Burgos, exactly what I expected, not disappointed at all. Chookagian vs Araujo was a bit weird, Araujo totally spent herself in the ground in round 2 but it didn't seem like she was doing that much there, mostly controlling? Once Chookagian stood up, it was one sided. Schnell was incredibly gun shy, no ideai if he thought he was winning but he was more active in his previous fight.
Technically speaking I loved Dariush's technique on the ground. Very agressive on the ground the first two rounds and he didn't need more in the third, leading to a more controlling stance. And the main event, what a rollercoaster. The fight could have been finished either way 3 or 4 times.

I agree. On the other hand, I don't think Cormier and Rogan have ever read the "new" rules of MMA. It's been a while now since they disagreed with the judges on some fights, like Chookagian vs Araujo or Bonrotin vs Schnell. Damage trumps everything, it doesn't matter if you control 4 minutes of a fight, if you take more damage, you lose the round. Only if the damage is equal, then you go to dominance.
The Vannata ruling was a joke though.

I feel like he's a victim of his own toughness, if he could have lost to Gaethje without taking so much damage maybe we don't see him on a 3 fight losing streak. Again tonight, impressive that he didn't tap, but at what cost? I think so too. What made him so good was the fact he could take punishment and counter attack with some crazy stunts. Now that he's a lot more careful after being cracked open by Gaethje, his offense also took a hit. The heart of a champion but his body doesn't follow him anymore.
I don't see how Zhang having been champ makes her some emotionless automaton. You see fighters cry in the cage all the time. That adrenaline gets you juiced up. To me, she looked shocked and demoralized at the negative reception she got. I think that played a factor in her loss, and that's not taking anything away from the greatness of Rose. Yeah I don't mind that either. To step up in a competition like this, you have to be delusional to some extent. If you don't believe you are the best, no way you're gonna have the success you want to have. But once you are back to training, you have to acknowledge your mistakes to get better. It's okay if it's a public facade, just have to not let that stop you from improving.

The top line up was mine but with with lee and wright instead Vannata and Barboza. The prize pool is structured like poker so while it was exciting to finish up pretty high, 1st made 25x what I did! lol Nice! It's awesome that you're making your picks perfectly while all my main card predictions came out wrong!

As much as I like to pretend I'm a MMA purist where I appreciate every moment even during the Jon Fitch days, the Woodley-Usman fight was pretty boring indeed.
I wasn't able to watch the event unfortunately but spoiled myself with the result. Is the main card worth tuning back in to watch? Unexpectedly, the biggest surprise to me was Souza getting submitted. I expected him to tap but that armbar was so swift, it seems like it broke as soon as Muniz locked it.
I can't believe Oliveira won, the dude was on the Rory Macdonald path of being a solid top 10 fighter as soon as he came into the UFC & sort of fizzled out. I remember watching all of his fights up until his fight with Ricardo Lamas, where I thought despite his amazing BJJ, he kept getting submitted by better fighters in Pettis, Lamas, & Miller & it didn't seem like he had particular strong power either. The fact that he won PLUS how he won via KO was the biggest surprise.
Also, awesome to see more activity in this thread with the usuals like JimmiC & JimmyJRaynor + a few new names like Lysteria & UsedEgg3!

Oh yeah even as a kinda purist, this fight was an absolute borefest, and I didn't enjoy his first fight against Masvidal either. The worst was still Ngannou vs Lewis 1.

I should go back into fantasy too, that was fun.
And thanks for the advice, I'll make sure to watch all the prelims next week!

ya it's a nice card, can't wait for moreno vs figueredo
diaz vs leon and izzy vs vettori is also nice but the winners are pretty obvious, big upset potential tho
|
this Dober vs Riddell fight is insane, Dober's chin is nuts.. he has 0 defense tho
|
I'm glad that one guy's arm is okay, because it was cringeworthy in real time. He didn't look fazed at all though.
NATE! So close to an epic moment, but too much showboating.
The Moreno fight was fantastic. Izzy's fight wasn't a snoozer by any means, but not one I'm going to remember fondly either.

how hardy ever got a main card for a ppv i'll never know. guy is a piece of shit.

People like to see pieces of shit get dropped. Mayweather has made a whole career out of it and the Paul guy is following suit. Hardy definitely doesn't have the talent to deserve a main card fight ever again though.

McGregor was fast, but I feel like he trains in a very cocky way. Only sharpening his strengths, but things tend to happen in fights, and you need to adapt. I would call it a career if I was him, the mystic aura has been gone for a while.
Leg kicking legs suck, it's the thing that stopped me from wanting to get into MMA. An attack that causes almost as much damage to you as your opponent, since it's not like a punch to the head where your bone is in line with the trajectory... It's just smashing of bones, seeing which one is stronger. Can't really get people wear padding on their shins without really altering the ground game... And it wouldn't look as cool. But anyway, I'm way more okay with kicks to a grounded opponent, event stomps and soccer kicks, but somehow not allowing kicks below the belt would make for a better sport imo.
Decent card overall, I started watching at the Condit fight. Burns is so physically strong, you can afford way more mistakes than when you're very technical, actually I was surprised how well Wonderboy was able to do. Still, I think both of them are several levels below Usman, who has the physique, but also excellent technique. I would favor Colby against Burns for sure as well.
I don't watch football, so I don't know Greg's past, but I don't really care. I've enjoyed how he composed himself in the ufc, and I quite like him... I'm not one to witch hunt people for the rest of their lives. That's just how heavyweight goes sometimes, would have been nice to have the fight go at least 1 round to see where they are at, happy for bam bam though.
Sean Suga did awesome, his striking is really on point. Definitely has that early McGregor career type style that is really enjoyable to watch. I worry about his wrestling and take down defence, but with good movement like he has shown, he should do well. Most top contenders in bantamweight are strikers as well, so that favors him going forward. Moutinho held in well, but when your durability is your main attribute, it's not really a good thing. His technique felt very raw, and I don't think he is ufc caliber at all... And a few of those fights will get your chin to go, and you're left with nothing. He took an insane amount of damage, but I don't agree with the stoppage 30 seconds before the end of the fight. If it was mid way through the fight, sure, maybe. But another 5% more damage, to damage the spirit of competition is dumb imo. I think for me, that fight is the perfect example of the borderline level of when to keep a fight going. If Moutinho did any less, I would have stopped the fight earlier, but it was just enough to let it go on to the end.

Conor McGregor can fuck off. I genuinely hope its the last ufc fight we see from him. He's single handedly lowered the bar for pre fight BS. It shouldn't be a race to the bottom. Some decent fights. I very much enjoyed Hardy getting knocked the fuck out again.
