afaik California has policies in place where 30 and 10 day weight checks can occur to fight extreme weight cuts

Jones is a small LHW (or average at best, I think he could make MW if he wanted to, he has a very similar frame to Cuckhold), but yes, I meant at HW of course.

I don't really like hydration testing because it's a bit arbitrary what's decided as safe and not safe for weight cuts, and so fights will be called off rather arbitrarily. I mean UFC does this too where some people like Max Holloway weren't allowed to weight cut, and then other fighters talk about passing out during the cut.

I think financial incentives rather than cancelling fights is the way to go. I don't know how complex hydration testing is, but I can get behind:

-Not allowed to be 10-12% over weight limit on fight night (can be a variable percentage for different classes, I think 10% extra weight at HW fucks up your body more than 10% at BW)
-And X% fine of purse for every Y% below what's considered safe hydration during weigh ins.

Unfortunately for PPV events a big chunk of the salary isn't released, but given that their fights would have been before the PPV share, it would be a proportional fine beforehand, and thus they'd settle into their proper weight class and body type. And if they put on more weight for the PPV fines due to the fine being relatively small, it's not too big of an issue, as the number of fighters are much fewer, and the number of these cuts each would do in their career wouldn't be high.

If it's planned though, the fighter can easily do a small weight cut to make the limit. If it's random, it might encourage the fighters to train dehydrated, not a fan.

This is crazy talk, Jones is the biggest LHW there is, he looked bigger than DC, the only guy close to his since is Gus and he was better then him. I bet him vs Miocic he would be the bigger guy.

Check UFC 232 fight night weight on Google. His cage weight was 222.5lb, and from what I gather he usually fights at 215-218lbs, earlier in his career while still UFC champion, he was fighting at 208-210lbs.

Woodley, Darren Till, Johnson, and probably Usman fight above 195lbs, most of them were 200lbs for at least a fight. Woodley claimed he could make 165lbs but it wouldn't be pretty as well.

Jon Jones doing the same 30lb rehydration to 185lb and going back to 215lbs seems very doable.

Remember how much muscle he packed on for the OSP fight, and still made weight? He looked 10lb larger than usual, no way he'd make weight if he was such a big LHW.

Edit: Anthony Smith and Santos walking weight were both 220lbs, I'm trying to find reliable numbers for cage weight, but few events in Cali since they changed their rules. But for example, Santos weighed in at 209.5lbs for his MW bout, though I only have 3 data points for events to look at. Michael Chiesa weighed in at 188lbs for his WW debut, but less than 6 months ago he was fighting at LW. If he had the same weight, that'd be a 32lb cut, but of course he gained weight in that time... How much thinner was he for his LW fight, idk, 5lbs from the looks of the pictures? So 27lb rehydration, at 155. But I'll concede, it'd be a bit more difficult than I expected before going digging for numbers. Anyway, it'd be a shitty cut, and he'd need to slightly change his training for it, but for a one off thing, doable.

Edit 2: Just looking at the CSAC UFC 227 report, and look at how almost every male fighter in 125-145lbs was rehydrating at least 15lbs, Brett Johns rehydrating 23lbs at 135, Alex Perez 20.5lbs at 125. Going proportionally by weight to 185lbs would be 30-32lbs. Aiming for a 27-28lb rehydration would get him to 212-213lbs. Also, DC weighed 236lbs (31lb rehydration) during his towelgate fight.

Woah, so many fights announced in the last couple hours:

-Jones vs Santos @ UFC 239
-Nunes vs Holm @ UFC 239
-Cejudo vs Moraes @ UFC 238
-Woodley vs Lawler @ ESPN 4

And Cub vs Burgos, Burgos was crazy in his Calvin Kattar fight, and after the Korean Superboy fight I became a huge fan of Swanson, very exciting for me.

Too bad that Stipe vs Jones didn't materialize, guess the UFC didn't want to pay more. All title fights are logical, should be no complaints with the MM there.

Woodley vs Lawler is strange to me, I'm pretty sure Woodley would get Colby for the belt if Colby won, so wouldn't be a bad idea waiting. Maybe the UFC tried to bluff him and tell him he will be skipped over, by the winner of Askren vs Masvidal I guess? Either way, I'm glad that Robbie is getting a big fight after that controversial stoppage, would've sucked for him if he got Edwards, Chiesa, or someone like that.

Now Ponzinibbio needs to fix his shit and stop rejecting fights and sign against RDA, Leon Edwards vs Thompson/Till, whichever recovers quicker, Pettis back to LW, Magny vs Chiesa, Maia has a veteran vs veteran fight... WW is looking good

masvidel vs askren is coming this summer. I love game bread I'm a little worried he will lose a split decision because that is what happens to him way to much. But I think if he can KO funky Ben than he should primed for a title shot.

Also, I am so ready for Gaethje vs Barboza I see no way this fight isn't awesome.

I think the winner of Askren/Masvidal will fight winner of Colby/Usman, unless both Colby and Tyron both win their fights (then Tyron would fight Colby and move to 185 regardless of result).

I'm looking forward to it too, I enjoy Ben Askren's tactics and behavior, and I think he's pretty intelligent.

I'm super excited for Barboza vs Gaethje too, really hard to predict. Can Gaethje get in the pocket and trade, or will Barboza manage to keep him at range. Worst outcome will be a round 1 KO I think, because this fight is going to be a brutal bloodfest until either one of them drops.

Do you guys want more promotions to be successful?

In my eyes, having one promotion, UFC in this case, is the ideal situation as a fan. Multiple promotions and organizations are a big part of what makes boxing not fun to follow.

I've said it time and time again, I think Dana White is brilliant and very intelligent, the perfect person to lead an MMA promotion. I'm interested to see how Bellator and ONE shape up, but I hope they play second fiddle the UFC. It's just so damn hard to sustain, because being the 10th in a division in the #1 promotion will make you less money than being #10 in the 2nd promotion, so unless your model is excellent and you do a much much better job than everyone else, it's so hard to do. The idea of talent getting split just sucks.

Sports like racing with the FIA managed to do it, tennis did it, cycling did it... I wonder if it's somehow possible to do it with MMA too. It does require the monopoly to innovate and be on the top of their game, be somewhat benevolent... But the UFC isn't far off from offering fighters 30% of the revenue, which I think is the golden standard of fair, and they have motivation to keep improving their product if they wish to expand their reach. I definitely try to filter out as much non-UFC content as I can. Maybe they need to open a separate league for old legends to prevent them from them getting signed by Bellator and the like, and putting eyes on another promotion.

I prefer 2 promotions being successful for a world wide sport like MMA. Competition is good.

IMO, Dana White is a great promoter.

Herb Dean explains the Askren/Lawler stoppage. nice interview. Dean was concerned about spine//neck damage incurred by an unconscious fighter no longer resisting his neck getting cranked.
