I think most people would agree that Harden is a viable #1 player on a championship-contending team, or at least significantly more capable of filling that role than Klay, who I think most would agree is better as a #2 or #3 player. While there is certainly a lot of value in having a very good 2-way wing with good size and athleticism, does that outweigh the value of a wing that can carry a team's entire offense while not hurting you on defense? After all, the number of players that can actually carry an entire team is pretty small and that role is arguably more essential to winning a championship than a Klay-type player. One example that comes to mind is Dirk. His skill on offense and ability to carry a team on any given night is what allowed the Mavs to achieve all of the postseason success the Mavs have had over the years. What eventually got the Mavs over the hump and got them their championship was finding the right pieces around Dirk and building a good enough team defense. Those role players were essential and are arguably hard to find, but the essential piece from which everything starts is the franchise player, i.e. Dirk. In that way, Dirk is more valuable than a very good 2-way PF, such as Horford or Aldridge. I would say Harden is close to being a Dirk-level type of player, which would make him one of the most valuable and scarce players in the league. That would place him a tier above Klay, because Klay is likely not ever going to be the type of player that can carry a team on his own, or even have an offense run through him. Fortunately, the Warriors have Curry for that, which makes Klay very valuable to them in terms of fit. But if you're talking about objective, general value, I think Harden is a step above. | ||
