Well, Phil Jackson won almost half of the championships in that span of time while employing an offense that minimizes the duties of the point guard position.
Height is important in the NBA. But I think there is nothing inherently flawed in the Warriors' roster construction with Steph as their best player. We could make an argument about the 2007 Spurs with Parker running the offense and Duncan the defense.

If you made that argument about the Spurs I would hope you were doing some sort of impression. But I do think defense is one of the reasons for the observation that I made, because even the best short guys (CP3 is a good example) still aren't very good at defense. Which is why the Warriors are a great team to breakout, because Klay/Draymond/Bogut are very good defenders.

steph on defense wont quite be a fatal flaw because of green's ability to help with containing driving guards.
if your idea of defense involves a rigid position by position match-up, then yes, a weak pg would be bad. but warriors are constantly switching on defense with klay and green, two of the best in the league at containing the drive. they also have iguodala, barnes etc who are also good defenders.
also steph is longer than his height suggests. he can be disruptive with his quickness and defense reading

steph curry is a good defender...

Rockets had to win at least one of the two games against the Spurs, and Harden had to have a great game for Harden to stay in contention, and even then he would have been the under dog.
In favor of Harden, you can argue that the Rockets would probably be deep in the lottery without Harden given their injuries this year, and the Warriors would probably still be a playoff team without Curry given how healthy they have been all year. Curry is a virtual lock at this point though as the best player on the best team, with neither player having drastically better stats.

harden has going for him the role of facilitator in the rockets offense. he accounts for, by scoring and assisting, an absurd amount of 3's. so as a matter of 'value to his team' harden prob looks better than curry.
but gsw's point margin is historic and the difference between a historically good team like the warriors and a good team like the rockets is pretty sizeable.

Chris Paul actually grades out as one of the best defenders in the NBA. Steph also grades out as a plus defender this year. Defense isn't just rim protection.

Also, the Spurs are going to drop to the 5th seed with this loss. Maybe even 6th if Memphis wins.
edit: PG just went down. It looks worrisome. Hopefully, it's not bad.
