On paper, that's probably still true. But, there was just a 6 win difference between the two last year, and Houston lost basically their entire bench + Parsons. Carlisle gets a lot more out of his roster than McHale does; it could go either way, IMO.

It also depends a lot on if Ariza performs like he did last year in a non contract year. I feel like trading Parsons for last year's version of Ariza helps Houston because they don't really need the extra ball handling/shot creation (Parsons actually scored most of his points off of assists, iirc), but they could really use a defensive wing (for less money too). Him + Beverly + Dwight could be enough to cover more of the defensive problems they had this year. Of course they still need to get a decent bench.

The Mavericks definitely got better. Calderon + Ellis was a horrible defensive back court generally. Also, Dalembert was pretty bad most of the time on both ends. Tyson Chandler should be a huge upgrade over him and Parsons should cover the production that they miss from Calderon and more. All they need is someone like Mo Williams or Mike Miller or someone off the bench to replace the 3 point shooters they lost and they should be good.

Raymond Felton is worse than Calderon. I don't think Dallas really improved much unless his minutes are going to be low.

Can someone explain the 2016 TV deal to me? I keep seeing people bring it up in regards to the increased salary cap but I'm not sure what it exactly entails.

He might be worse, but Chandler + almost anyone is way, way better than Dalembert + Calderon. They were using Ellis as their main ball handler anyway. The only thing that they're missing is the 3pt shooting, but that's easier to replace than the much improved defense they're getting. Also, Harris is a serviceable backup and is expected to get most of the minutes.

Any lineup with Harris last year was >>>> Calderon being in there.

Pretty much: more (basketball) revenue coming into the league, means a higher salary cap to distribute that $$ to the players.

Basically the $ amounts in NBA contracts are fictional. What they really represent is a percentage of the 50% of NBA revenues that players are entitled to under the CBA. So, for instance (caution made up numbers), if all players have $1 Billion in contracts for a year, and you are supposed to make $10 Million, you really get 1% of the 50% all players get.

Why this is important is if the cap goes up that means that max contracts can be worth more and that also inflates the dollar values of every contract. If, for instance, now the total "value" of contracts is 1.5 Billion, your $10 million does not automatically increase to 15 Million (keeping your share of the pie), instead you now have .667% of the players' share.

And as alluded to earlier, the last part of clutz's explanation is key to why players have short contracts and opt outs in 2016. When the tv deals go up, you want to be negotiating a big raise. Being locked into an "old" contract then could cost you millions that would go to other players. In the NBA you almost always want to opt out of your contract when given the chance for a bigger payday.

its not overhyped but I don't understand why people think carmelo signing that contract is equal to him being chained down in new york for life,he's gonna give the knicks a honest shot and if it doesn't work out in the next 2-3 years he's just gonna ask for a trade and move on to greener pastures
