I realize they are basically the same. The real difference was Kopitar, Gaborik and Carter contributed alot where as Nash and Richards were invisible (St. Louis played well) the montreal goalie played well. price might have done better but it would be pretty hard

This is applicable to most teams in the East. Not just Montreal et la. I agree but you gotta define what you mean by closeness, its all relative. We all can agree that the Oilers and the Panthers are the furthest from winning the Cup. Montreal at least will get to the playoffs, and there who knows, if Cam Ward can win a Conn Smythe and Cup then anyone else can too.

We've seen quite a few goalies have career years or make a good playoff run only to fade out. They can have a good year or a few good years and get paid handsomely for it. Those stories do happen, but when you look at the East there are just too many teams that have a lot of flaws to overcome.

Sure, but because the East is so flawed its possible for a mediocre team to sneak into the Cup and then a goalie steal 4 games. It happened before. And quite frankly with the Bruins being the only good team in the East AND being hilariously and uniquely vulnerable to Montreal for some reason I could see with a few luckier changes Bruins-Montreal in the conference final, Montreal destroy the Bruins due to their voodoo magic powers and then have one go Cam Ward mode. But yes, in general, its hard to imagine how an Eastern Conference team can compete with a Western conference team. They are just better and it will take 2-3 draft cycles or some crazy trades for an Eastern team to stock up and be competitive.

David Booth just bought out by the Canucks, and after he signs for 2.something mill a year with another team, he will put up 50 points. Bank on it.

Booth and Weiss, twinsies of failure.
