Heard or read something from Zach Lowe recently that despite his poor rebounding numbers for a guy his size, his team rebounds much, much better when he's on the floor than when he's not. Eating up bodies is a real thing, though the Korver thing was rather embarrassing.

I thought he was regarded as a premier shot alterer (I made that word up) based on his size and jumping ability. Hibbert is considered a or the best rim protector in the game. It's hard for everyone to disconnect his abilities there from his real struggles on the offensive end (which have been even more of a challenge lately). In general I don't think Hibbert has a 'quick' jump and that makes him vulnerable on the offensive side.
Indiana is a mess.

one of his strengths regarding shot altering is right. he somehow 'perfected' or mastered contesting shots without fouling

George, West, Hibbert and Stephenson all average over 6.5 boards so it's not a problem for them just felt like randomly throwing it out there.
He's a good "shot alterer", but it's not because of jumping ability. He has poor athleticism. He's a huge guy with good timing and typically good positioning as well, that's enough to alter shots at his huge size. And yeh he avoids fouling too.

The wacky first weekend of the playoffs continue: SA defeats Dallas 90-85 in a bizarrely officiated game where everything seemed to go wrong for SA. Unfortunately, the bad luck all came to bear on Dallas at the end who scored only one meaningless field goal in the final 7:35.

Dirk had this miss on a little bunny shot that was eerily similar to one Duncan missed in the Finals last year.

Uhhg, this is the classic Chicago problem. Get better shots, miss them anyways. Force terrible shots, enough still go in.

God Bulls offense sucks. Nothing like blowing a 13 point lead and ultimately giving up the lead when they have it for so long in the second half.
drose please come back next year and stay back. Don't leave us with this offense for another year.

Pretty awfully officiated game, but I think Portland slightly got the worst of it, so no sympathy for Houston.
|
Man was it just me or was Houston's ball movement horrible on offense? like it seemed that a ton of their possessions wound up being Harden pick and roll> Harden Isolation > Harden bombs a three.
|
That KD 4 point play, oh my lord. Memphis is going to feel sick if they lose this now.

I really despise NBA referees sometimes. They seem to call fouls when they think there "should" be a foul rather when there actually is one. The refs basically just told Marc Gasol that he can't go for a deflection/loose ball because there was no foul prior to Durant catching the ball but he's gifted a foul just for the fact of Marc Gasol standing in a position he has a right to be in.

I think we've just come to expect shit level officiating in OKC.

Equality through mediocrity or something. What was most frustrating about the OKC MEM game was good it could have been, and how much the constant, endless stoppages ruined it. How many timeouts, replay reviews of obvious shit did we have? I would be interested in seeing a real-time vs time-playing (including inbounding/foulshots as game-time) breakdown of the end of that game because it felt absurd.

I'm not calling conspiracy (yet), but there are two issues with OKC. One, they have a very loud arena, which is significant if you subscribe to the theory that crowd noise accounts for homecourt advantage. Second, they have several fast, athletic players that force the old, blind officials to make quick calls without good views. And it's not just that they CAN do things, but that the officials expect them to be able to do things. You can convince me that Westbrook didn't foul Tony Allen trying to rip the ball out of his hands, but that call is going against any other team/player that's not the Heat 80% of the time. Likewise, they didn't show too many angles of Sefalosha stripping Conley, but from the one I saw, it didn't look likely to me that Sefalosha touched the ball. The play happens quickly and the refs just assume. I'm a fan of defense and good hands, but I don't think players should be encouraged to paw, grab and swipe at the ball all the time and OKC seems to have carte blanche to do this. The Durant 4 point play was just stupid anyway you look at it. Either there was no foul on the 'entry pass' and Gasol is allowed to stand there or the foul was on the entry pass. The only explanation is that the refs weren't looking at them but as soon as the ball gets to Durant there "must have been a foul". Speaking of weirdly late calls, Tony Allen was jostling with Durant, then takes his hands completely off Durant and then they call a foul. Are the refs just waiting to see how far they go? I don't get why they are so slow.
|
The refs are just bad...
And they get worse the more rules we add.
|
Do you think all the rule changes might be messing with their heads a bit?
They've been used to calling stuff for years and then the rules keep getting changed.
