It also matters who you score against and when. Players who bang in a hat trick when their team are already winning 3-0 are less impressive than players (like Drogba) who can net a goal in a 0-0 to win the match 1-0. What are their stats in important matches against top opposition?

Everyone could see last season that Xavi in top form was just as important to Barca's years of success as Messi. With him on the decline Barca are not as superior anymore. Where is his Ballon d'Or?

But titles are what make a player successful after all arent they? last seasons top 11 only consisted of primera division players (which is a joke by the way) and as far as I can remember the justification was that spain won the euros.
I like messi he is an awesome player and most likely the best player of this decade. But bayern won the champions league and bundesliga in such a dominating fashion u cant just ignore that. Thats just barca/messi fanboyism.

Ever since Sneijder didn't even make the top3 after leading his side to a treble and reaching the final of the world cup the award has been meaningless and should be to most football fans. If form and achievements don't matter than just stop giving the award out every year because any football fan will tell you Messi is the most skilled player right now.

It might be boring but I can't see anybody but Messi winning the Ballon. Sure Bayern as a team were more successful and Ribery played a big part in that well oiled machine but when it comes to technical skills, the ability to decide a game on ones own, having the biggest impact on games as an individual (psg when messi came in anybody?) there is not a single player in that generation comparable to him. I mostly disagree with Ronaldos high ratings because whenever I see him he's doing nothing but kicking a free kick out of the stadium but Messi... no way there is anybody more deserving.
Tell me how Cristiano Ronaldo didn't deserve the award the year before this one when he won the golden boot (46 goals in La Liga and 60 overall) and lead Real Madrid to one of their most impressive seasons in history... please do.
