Who's gonna defend when all 4 of them are playing? That's why I'm saying portugal is better.

Having said that, I'd still love to face Argentina in the World Cup and would be comfortable with our chances of going through. ![]()

And I agree that Mascherano isnt as good a player that he would have been had he not come to Barcelona, but thats the sad thing about having to compete for spots in the same position against people better attuned to a system then you. It happens to lots of players at every club at some point or the other. Thats why in my opinion Yaya Toure leaving Barca was a massive decision for him.

He has never played as a playmaker because Alonso was of course better than him. But anyone would pale beside Xabi Alonso. It doesn't make Mascherano any worse. He had a very good eye for passes.

I especially liked WillyWanker's "Argentins (which is basically Messi + 2 + Mascherano + 7 average players)" - so the only good players Argentina has are the ones playing at Barca. XD I'm sorry if the 2 best Argentina players are playing in Barça right now... The +2 (or +3 depending of their strategy) consists of Aguera/Higuain/Di Maria/Lavezzi, and none of them are playing in Barcelona. So in my sentence, just 50% are playing in Barcelona ![]() And yeah the Mascherano "playmaker" made me laugh too... And the "shite CB" as well! He was a beast in CB when Guardiola was there, nobody could go through the defense with Abidal and him at this time. But when Guardiola left, the whole team started to get worse, and Mascherano got worse too. He would have shone a lot more had he stayed in Liverpool or joined another big team though. He just cannot compete with Busquets in Barcelona's system. I think Argentina is big contender for the WC because the WC is in Brazil. If it was in Europe, they would probably not be ranked so high. Nonetheless, they finished 1st of the South American WC qualifier, a group far worse than Portugal's. Comparing the two teams, if you only take into account "FIFA scores", yeah Argentina is superior to Portugal because they have so many 80+ players on the attacking side, but the rest of the team is average. Portugal is solid and will always be a pain in the ass to play against, whereas Argentina can get destroyed by well organized teams because their midfield is weak (except for Mascherano) and their defense far from being foolproof. But they can also destroy teams with their attacking-4... Is it enough to win the WC? Not sure... In Brazil maybe !

Sven Bender=tank Also, I think Barca losing 2-1 without Messi, and Real Madrid winning 4-1 (with 10 men, no less) without Ronaldo should put an end to the Messi v Ronaldo debate ![]() On November 29 2013 01:13 Pandemona wrote: Plus it was 10men Real Madrid without Ronaldo xD And the team Barca played had 10 men ![]()

International football has not been really good lately, WC 2010 an Euro 2012 were a big letdown and no top team has become any better apart from Germany maybe. But they'll collapse eventually in the semi or something. This team, while the players being all world class and all, doesn't seem to have the mental fortitude of the previous generations. I would put my money on them if the WC was a league-style competition but it isn't. Something seems off with Brazil, but I can't put my finger on what. Just an intuition. If Messi is healthly and has had a good season with Barça, Argentina would be a my personal favorite. Elite players have shown many times during past WC that they can carry a team to WC glory. They can inspire success to an otherwise average team. This is why this competition is so legendary. I am on the fence about Spain, I haver never liked them tbh but usually veterans do pretty good, they are true competitors and they know they can make history forever. I see them going to the final and losing. I think there is a pretty good chance as well that a "dark horse" goes to the final or even wins the WC. Could be France, Portugal, Colombia, the NL... the kind of team who could beat anybody on a (very) good day
