Do you want lots and lots of unhappy players, lured into unfair contracts at a young age? Nah, the players should always have the upper hand. I don't see a problem with the transfer, Martinez wanted to move on to a bigger club and Bilbao got 40 million €.

It's not because of the price, everyone knows that he is not worth as much as Bayern paid under normal circumstances, but Bayern has more than enough cash for such a transfer, so I don't mind them spending it. The thing that bugs me is there was no way Bilbao could have prevented the transfer, as far as I understood they were forced to include a buy-out clause in the contract Martinez signed not too long ago. If they don't want to sell him they should have the right to do so and that has to be respected in my opinion. The Bayern executives are talking so much about strengthening clubs rights(Rummenigge is the president of the ECA afterall :p), it's just silly that they are the ones brute-forcing such a transfer, especially considering that they already denied a player that wanted to go to another club a transfer(Ribery, even tho he is happy with the way it turned out in the end). Additionally Sammer, Rummenigge and Heynckes made themselves look like idiots with the way they were behaving in the press during the whole story. It's Bilbao's own fault if they agreed to the 40 million clause. If someone pays 40 million it is only the player's decision if he wants to leave or not. thats how it is. If Bilbao wanted to to keep the player indefinitely they should have given him 10 year contract without a buy-out clause. thats how it is. Bilbao weakened themselves by agreeing to a buy- out clause.

No player/agent in their right mind would sign a contract of that kind of length without a buy out clause these days. Either he was going out of the door free of charge or they would get 40 million for him. Bilbao could not prevent him from leaving in any possible way if someone was willing enough to pay the clause.

Fact is however that free agency after your final year means if a club wants to keep you, then the leverage is with you to negotiate an extension. Additionally if there is a buyout clause then they are usually unalterable. I dont see the problem. It was much worse before when clubs had the power, granted its not perfect now but its much better. Any issues such as inflated transfer tags arent down to player power as much as clubs being willing to splash the cash.

Definitely, it should have been a good fit with Liverpool with players like Downing and Johnson but Downing was retarded and the team just wasn't able to give him the supply + he was shit most of the season, probably partly due to buckling under the pressure and attention that the 35 million tag garnered him, at a young age. In West Ham he will have much less pressure, and will have a team that can definitely give him supply.
