Gymnastics can be effective if you cannot use a gym. You could do something simple like handstand work & L-sit & just work out for 10 minutes a day & you may see results. I personally started with crunches because i was ignorant & i couldn't do a V-up, then once i could hold a V-up for a minute i started L-sit progression. That kind of thing can give you core strength anyways & then you just have a layer of fat ontop of your core that you have to deal with.

Hey TL fitness people. I signed up for my first Half Marathon yesterday and have been trying to find a good training schedule to go off of. However, the issue I'm having is that there seems to be a million ones out there... so I was wondering if anyone on here has ever trained for one before and would be willing to share their experiences with what worked for them.

Thanks a bunch!

My wife completed the Hal Higdon training (I think she did intermediate but not sure) and was happy with the programming.

Thank you Mordek,

Well i currently have a job from 7am to 5pm, i do gym from 6 to 7 or 7:30 pm, i do not have an strict routine, but i do follow some rules while working out, i work out 2 muscles (or group of muscles i dont know xD) per day, one big and one tiny, for example: chest (big) and biceps (tiny), or legs (big) and triceps (tiny) or shoulders (tiny) and back (big)... I think you get the idea, plus i do abs EVERY DAY (mon-fri), and i always let the muscle rest for at least 2 days before repeating it, for example if i do chest on mondays, i may do it again on thursday, so thats all about my program.

About the food
I eat two "empanadas" for breakfast everyday, no more food until lunch wich vary a lot but its usually: soup, a big plate of vegetables and some dead animal on the side (chicken, cow, pork, fish etc) and rice, then at mid noon i eat a plate of fruits, melon, watermelon, pinneaple etc (like 4pm), then gym at 6pm and then dinner... The dinner is the worst part, i eat 2 hot dogs everyday, they are cheap and where i live i CAN NOT cook, so yeah, there is that...

Oh and about what you said, i do want to gain some muscle, but not a lot, because im really short, and i think it wouldnt be very good for me, but i do want my 6pack and muscle definition...

Oh and thanks again

Cut the crap on the empanadas and hot dogs, They're not going to kill you any sooner, but the faster you lay off them, the better. so yeh, get on that.

What are your goals? Asthetics or something else? Main reason for going to the gym?

How long is the half marathon away and what timings are you aiming for?
Also what are your current fitness level and previous running experience?

This thread will help too.

Cut the junk food, learn to cook (it's super easy), and get on a lifting program (see TL H&F original post) and start moving some heavy ass weight. Best way to deal with a break up.

The marathons on September 21st, so about 14.5 weeks away. My goal is to try and run it in about 2hrs, since I know in previous years I could do ~13km in about 60-70min without any serious training. My current fitness level is pretty low, I only really run (currently running about 4mi in just under 40min) and occasionally swim (~1.25km in about half an hour) though I only started to get back into shape a couple of weeks ago after school died down for me. Previously years though, I was running about 7.5min a mile when in shape.

And cool. Ill check out that thread later.

You don't need to work core more than 2-3 times a week with 1 or 2 exercises unless it's stupidly weak. Do things like planks/side planks, GHD, Back extensions, and trunk twists. Add weight where applicable.
Your core will build most of strength from doing things like deadlifts, squats, overhead squats, bent over rows, etc.
If you're doing it for aesthetic reasons, then specific core exercises are rather useless as visible abs are 90% about proper diet.

Pretty much what decaf said. I will not that side planks are a great exercise to help prevent the muscle imbalances that can lead to SI joint problems which is an issue that several people here, myself included have run into. Also pistol and goblet squats, glute bridges, back extensions and GHD situps if you start having problems, as well as the proper stretching an mobilizations.

Well what are your goals? Aesthetics it's debatable (I personally think you look dumb if you have huge calves and a huge upper body and then your quads, glutes, and hamstrings like tiny). If you're looking to get in better shape and get stronger though... you basically should be doing at least squatting and deadlifting. There's really no reason not to.

Most people fail to see and understand, that most of that strenght you acquire through deadlifting/squats/Compound lifting, will carry to the rest of your body. google what muscles does a full body Squat and Deadlift activate. You'll be amazed.

Congrats on taking that first step!

I swear by Hal Higdon (who wrote the Marathon series of books, but he definitely has training plans for halves and shorter distances). I also recommend Runner's World for tips on everything from gear to conditioning/crosstraining.

For your training, you need to consider your course. What race are you doing? Or at the very least describe your race.

- Is the course flat/check your elevation chart? If not, you need to work more on hill training.
- What time of year? Early September may require you to train in more humid conditions. Late November means something different. Gun time also affects this. (EDIT: Just saw your date was late Sept, not bad)
- Depending on your body and the time of year, this will affect your hydration/nutrition strategy. This is something you need to consider in the latter part of training.

For my first half, I signed up for a few 5ks and a 10k as a test drive in race conditions. You need to get into that race mentality (organisation/managing the crowds around you) because training runs are very different. Race in a big city/large field, you have to look down for the first mile.

Try and have a base of 5 miles/8 km at the very worst at race pace before starting the 12 week (minimum) training. I throw in an extra week in most of my training plans for a half in the event unexpected injury occurs (which thankfully for me is rare) or if RL seriously gets in the way for a week.
