I believe most of you Americans don't know what cricket is, but for them people who do (frolix etc), i sometimes play it XD

Also I got Cricket 2004, i was australia, they were dukes, 10 over match, i scored over 250 runs, them, under 40 :D

Anyway, cricket is a game of 2 teams of 11, 1 player is a wicketkeeper and.... umm i cant be bothered saying more

well the point of the game basically is to when your batting, smash the ball as far as you can with the cricket bat and when your bowling, try to \"bowl\" the ball to the \"wickets\".

i think this kinda summerises it :X

Cricket is a fine game. It is also highly eccentric, which is one of its charms. Despite watching the sport for more than two decades it still never fails to amuse me that test matches last for five days and the players break for lunch and tea.

England has a fairly decent team at the moment, which makes a nice change. Still no chance of beating Australia though.
We are vigilant.

Test cricket is played over 5 days with 90 overs each day. You have to bowl the opposition out twice, whilst scoring more runs (in a nutshell).

One day games are 50 overs a side, most runs wins.

Test cricket was the original form when it was first played way back when, whilst one day cricket is fairly new (Late 1970s)

God what a great game the other night...some truely fine cricket...australia were just lucky they came so close against the quality side they were playing...

Cricket 2004 is gay...it always crashes between 600-1000 runs in a 1 day international...pisses me off. That and its almost impossible to score <300 with nathan astle :O

they've toured west indies (which are the worst they've been in years), zimbabwe(complete crap, shouldn't even be a test team) they've also played namibia and they didn't slaughter the shit out of them.
i will be VERY surprised if england beats south africa and they have NO chance of winning the ashes.
NONE!
Im willing to bet $10(yeh im poor) on both these outcomes with anyone living in aus

England is by far the 2nd best test side atm.

They went through their last summer winning all their series against NZ, West Indies and India.

I really don't understand all the attention South Africa gets. They're by far the most overrated side out there today. They have a few good batsmen and not much else.

England will destroy South Africa. I'll take the bet NP. As for the Ashes... Never

I think England have improved but noway are they the 2nd best side. When they are able to win a test series in australia then they are a top 2 side. South Africa the last year or two have slipped but I still think they are good enough to own england.

Btw the test ranking arent accurate at all and need to be changed. I remember a couple of years ago Australia were dethroned as the number one test playing nation to South Africa just because they lost in india in 2001, despite having a better win/loss ratio in tests then South africa.

The official standings mean crap all.

I actually think they're quite an accurate reflection of the current scene.

But yes the situation you mentioned was ludicrous at the time. It made even funnier when the South Africans failed to make it out of the group stages of the World Cup, and Kenya did

England only starts to get good the series after they have been beaten by Australia. It happens every year with the ashes same old story. In the meantime they win a few tests away from home, Michael Vaughan is scoring some runs and they get all cocky thinking they have what it takes to beat Australia.

England wont win a test series over Australia for another 7-8 years.

Was a nice game last night. New Zealand played well to get so close, that NZ number 11 hitting for consecutive sixes was nice. Don't think i've ever seen that before! Was also good to see Chris Harris demoted down the order due to injury come out and bat, Have to admire the kiwis courage there.

Vettori out LBW was a bad umpiring decision and cost the kiwis the match imo.

I'm sure that was the first final of the 96 season featuring the West indies Australia and Sri Lanka. But I have fond memories of that game The aussies were chasing a small total and were at one stage 6/40 odd. Have to love Bevan though for that camio innings chipping away at the total with the tail enders. Then hitting roger harper for 4 from the last ball to win the match.

Another match that sits fondly in my mind is the 1999 world cup semi final, Australia vs South Africa. Was a very slow batting wicket with Australia only scoring 213 odd runs and South Africa was needing 9 from the last over with Kluzener hitting the ball as if it were the size of a beach ball. Fleming the old aussie swing bowler was hit for the first 2 balls of the over. The match was then tied and with 3 balls left Kluzener and allan donald went for a suicide single ending the match in a tie but meaning Australia progressed!

That was the 1st game Australia were chasing a pretty big total with Steve Waugh saving our asses. Gibbs caught the ball threw it up to celebrate then dropped it.

Then Steve Waugh goes up to him and says "You just dropped yourself the world cup" lol

This is the first year in my life when during the summer I actually thought England were good at cricket. Andy Flintoff is very good and Harmison is supposedly world #1 bowler although I think hes overrated..

I fancy them to beat South Africa. Soon find out first test is between 17-21 December.

For England to ever be good, they need to strengthen their County Cricket league better. Foreign imports are able to join and they are the main players dominating. England have some promising batsman but they just don't have the bowlers under developement

This is a fairly epic bump I know, but I decided it was better to bump this than make a new thread.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/england-v-india-2011/content/story/527303.html

On the back of a crushing win by an innings and 242 runs over India, England have replaced India as the number one ranked Test team in the world. This victory, won through a masterly 294 from Alistair Cook and sharp bowling from England's pace battery, also wrapped up the series 3-0 in England's favour, with a fourth game still to play.

India's stay at the top was heavily disputed, with Australia, Sri Lanka and South Africa all feeling they had claims to the top position at various times. South Africa in fact came within 9 balls of snatching top spot in their last series in India.

England however, have comprehensively won their last 6 series and are undefeated in a series since 2008. They have also beaten strong opposition and been winning at home and away, which was a criticism of India's reign at the top. Are England the real deal? Do they deserve to be there? Should we expect a British dynasty or are they just a flash in the pan who will be unceremoniously knocked from their perch sooner rather than later?

Another epic bump, but is anyone watching the third Australia vs India test? Australia's opening partnership was historic, what an insane way to dominate! First bowl India out for 161 and then almost catch up within like 20 overs. Crazy!

i sat there at the tele in complete awe.

honestly indias downfall atm is their selectors, they're completely adamant on keep the "superstars" in their team even when their not in form at all.

which in turn results in us aussies SMASHING THEM.

as an aussie im loving this test series, as a cricket fan im slightly annoyed at how one sided things are though.

Yeah, honestly I'm half cheering for India as I want to see a competitive game/series. I remember in my childhood I would always cheer for whoever was playing against Australia, simply because we dominated so hard that it didn't seem fair to enjoy it...

I play every chance I get which isn't very often because its either raining, just rained or about to rain in Vancouver. I prefer bowling over everything else (mid-fast) and I'm pretty good at it from what I've heard. =)

Stopped following pro cricket after I moved to Canada from Pakistan 8 years ago. Also, because I got pissed off at teams throwing matches.

Hopefully this thread stays active and I can get back into it.

it's even more depressing considering that the australian team actually isn't that great (compared to past years).

Definitely a good day for India bowling-wise, but i really can't see them batting too impressively, and even if they do bat well, a mediocre score from Australia's second innings will probably still be enough to win it.

indians are only good on home soil. been like that for a while, and they play a lot of minnows there as well. it's been in contention for a while the sachin isn't that "great" because most of his huge scores are off like zimbabwe and bangladesh. anyway. don't know why australians are doing so well, but their batting is always susceptible. just lost 10 wickets for 140odd. lets see if indian can show a little bit of fight!
i've always considered south africa as the strongest team out there and kallis > tendulkar for me.

even on TL I seem to be unable to get away from the shame...

as if watching the games are bad enough, the level of madness from the media is just wow...

at least Indian bowling seems to be picking up again.

No arguments about SA being the strongest though i would love to see them vs England in a test series and come on man, sure Kallis is a great bowler and batsman but Tendulkar is basically the GOAT in cricket.

Also how the hell are India that awful at fielding?

To be honest, I find many of India's players to be lazy. Watching Zaheer Khan chase that ball to the rope was hilarious. Dhoni is never at the stumps to field throws, just sits on his arse.

I think they've found a player in Yadav though. He's quick and energetic. He will only get better.

Also Brad Haddin fuck off and retire already.

Man, India getting rolled in 3 days means I don't get to watch any of this test.

I'm glad there's test matches I still enjoy. At the moment, NZ gets to play Zimbabwe. This is after the 12345678 series we usually play against Bangladesh every year.
Hopefully we can beat S.A. though. Looking forward to that series.

Its funny how India always go on about having "great" batsmen who all average over 50. But in reality, they never score over 200 as a team unless they are batting on an Indian graveyard wicket. BOWL AT DA HEAD = India all out <150

And then theres the bowlers. I am pretty sure that they have the worst bowling attack out of all the test playing nations (at least Bangladesh have shakib).

Luckily the Indians dug in near the end there or it could have been a 2-dayer! Aussies playing decently and Indians playing BADLY is fun to watch for us Aussies .

At least we've looked capable of bowling a side out, even one playing as ineptly as this Indian side.

Still need to get our batting sorted out, but BRING ON THE ASHES .

Aus is playing very well, especially Warner. But that is on a very hard true wicket in perth vs a very poor bowling attack. Put him on a green top in northern england vs anderson with the ball swinging both ways on a 5-10 degree celcius day, I think he will have lots of problems. To be honest, the only batsmen who can bat in England in previous years is is the English batsmen (because everyone else freezes to death as soon as they get off the plane).

Bit of a necro, but the opening game of the Indian Premier League started about 20 minutes ago, Kolkata Knight Riders v Delhi Daredevils. Brett Lee took a wicket with the first ball of the tournament.

Sadly there is no television coverage in Australia due to a rights dispute

Sachin Tendulkar will bring an end to his glittering 24-year international career after he plays his 200th Test, which is scheduled to be during the home series against West Indies in November. Tendulkar announced his decision on Wednesday afternoon, via a BCCI statement, like he had done when he retired from ODIs in December 2012.

I do too....as surprisingly the last 4/5 experiences have been bloody epic! Minus the fact that we lost 5-0 in one of those, we got to see some absolute awesome players play the game. My favorite of the lot if Mr Warne, god that guy could spin a ball xD
Then the best test ever was the Birmingham test in England in 2005, jesus wept, Flintoff and KP in the same side going ham with the bat, awesome!

Ha, I'm actually a New Zealander living in Australia. In the Ashes, I support the underdogs, which means I've been going for Australia last series and will do the same again. Gonna have cricinfo open in the background at work, and running to the kitchen TV for every wicket. Australia's bowling stocks are running low due to injuries, and England does have a great team. This won't end well is my first impression

Haha oh fair enough!
Yeah i think England will win due to the superior batting line up. Already in the warm up games (yes i guess warm up but still) they have been in fine form. Remember last Ashes in Australia where England where winning due to out batting Australia? Making like 500 and skittling out Aussie for 250 and just using that huge 1st innings lead to romp home. I have a feeling it will be like that in the first test.

Pretty hilarious indeed, however we're just as likely to be rolled for 150 then take a total of 1 wicket in the 2nd innings, so I won't get too excited.

5-0 WHITEWASH. Its the first time an England side have lost all 100 wickets in a 5 test Ashes series, we absolutely stuffed them in every way. Serious questions for Flower and co. but right now:

I am really enjoying the twenty20 world cup thing, some great games so far.

The last couple of years I have basically only watched the IPL and not cared at all about any other cricket. Twenty20 is definitely the way forward I personally think they should just drop test cricket entirely its truly dire.

England suck at twenty20 but who cares an entertaining game is far more important than England doing well.

The last couple of years I have basically only watched the IPL and not cared at all about any other cricket. Twenty20 is definitely the way forward I personally think they should just drop test cricket entirely its truly dire.

England suck at twenty20 but who cares an entertaining game is far more important than England doing well.

Edit: meh, cba.

Nothing could be more entertaining than Australian commentary of West Indian batsman dancing to Korean music hyped up by a Bangladeshi DJ.

Didn't even know we had a cricket thread on TL, used to be a bit of a bowler when I was a kid... was shit at batting though. Cricket in Serbia is practically no-existent and relies on hand-outs from the UK embassy but meh. At least with the start of 20-20 cricket the clubs have started to get serious.

Yusuf Pathan has just scored 72 runs of 22 balls (he got to 50 in 15). Unbelievable.

Massive bump because it's Ashes season again!

England are currently attempting to Bazball the Aussies. That won't mean much to people who don't follow cricket, but the current result is that no one has scored more runs in seven overs against Australia since 1936. On the other hand, England have also lost a wicket in trying to score so quickly.

I'm so hype for this series. Whether or not England win, we're definitely going to make it entertaining with this ridiculous brand of test cricket that we're playing.
