Ai ya... first session back from a week of strep throat. The bar felt so heavy

funkie, i really recommend not using medication..especially if you smoke, addiction is easy to come and hard to get rid of
Today my workout looked like i was using 10kg heavier weights...guess that 50km/3h run of skiing really did hit me and i should have used 2 days for resting :D, took only 1 off.

I don't smoke, or not right now. I used to smoke weed, but that was back in december and stuff, and I don't usually do it anymore.
I thought about getting some weed, and see if relaxing helps me fall asleep, but I haven't got to the point of finally decying to buy.

I finished today's workout. I banged out every rep ezpz. Don't know why I felt so good. Last week I felt like shit after but today I feel great. Glad that I feel this way though instead of shit haha. Next up is 5x7@250 on Wednesday! Gonna bang that out. Also did press 3x5@135 as well. Now it's time to shower, eat, and get ready for my work party. Get to see Transformers before it comes out tomorrow =)

After a weekend of drinking and only 3 hours of sleep last night I dragged my arse to the gym. The plan was to just finish the working sets and see how the heavy singles went.
They went well.
Benched 100kg for the first time ever after being stuck on 95kg for almost 8 months!
guess I need to go out drinking more...

My firefighter's physical is in month. So I'm done with SS for a while to focus more on endurance for the next three weeks before the physical. Gunna do a lot more HIIT type of stuff and more running and sprinting every day.
So here's a mid-summer progress report for now anyway. ~~~~~~ Starting date: Apr 25, 2011 (162lbs) Ending date (for now): June 22, 2011 (166lbs) Squat: 135lbs -> 235lbs Bench: 105lbs -> 135lbs Deadlift: 185lbs -> 265lbs Press: 75lbs -> 95lbs Powerclean: 80lbs -> 135lbs ~~~~~~~~~~ My self evaluation: + Show Spoiler +If I'm honest with myself I'd say not only am I not satisfied with my numbers as there's obvious room for improvement; but I'm also not pleased with my progress as a whole. I had a real shitty week at the beginning of June that derailed my progress on a lot of my lifts (bench, press, DL) and I was only starting to get back on track now. Because of this, I feel like press and bench barely progressed at all, and I know these are my weak points anyway.
The only thing I feel at most OK with is my squat. I have pretty steadily been making progress from day 1. The only thing that bothers me is that I thought my body would have adapted a lot quicker to squats since I actually did a bunch in HS playing hockey. But back then I didn't really give a shit and was only fucking around for the most part, but I'm still way behind my old PR of a measly 305lbs @ 145BW.
But for now it's back to a 5 day a week sched of endurance training. Running, bleacher climbs, pushups pullups a lot of BW training again. I still definitely want to keep doing the SS lifts just scale the weight back a little bit and go for a few more reps. Like 80% of 5RM.
I think something like doing the SS lifts twice a week, with sprints on those days and HIIT and BW stuff and longer runs on the in between days. So say, Monday I squat, bench, DL and Thursday I squat, press, powerclean. In between days are longer runs (5k-10k) and BW training for endurance. Also I want to start playing more hockey. It's perfect interval training. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the rink in my town :D

I have a question for you. I've been reading a lot about nutrition and have adjusted it accordingly to the wise inputs from eshlow and others. While I'm still not 100% paleo I think I'm pretty close to it.
Now I had to call in sick to work today because I've been plagued with head ache and a soar throat since yesterday. Now my question to the nutricion specialists: What do you optimally eat when you're sick? And calory wise, more or less or just about the same? There is a lot of misleading information on the web so I figured I'd ask here.
Any (funded) advice is appreciated, thx.
Eat regularly as much as possible.
I like to do 20-30k IU vitamin D per day until I get over illness.

Turns out trying to workout two days after playing 6 games of rugby isn't a good idea. Managed to get some FS reps in at 150kg but my snatching and clean+jerk were just awful.

Ah nice where did you use to play at/what position? If you're still looking to hit people, get in shape, social functions, and girls, i'd recommend joining the local rugby club :D (i play for mich state) You're goals are where my current squat/power clean are at (my bench is shitty though, only around 275-300)
I played offensive line at a Division 1 college football program in Virginia. Rugby won't be in the future plans, 4 surgeries (two knee and two shoulder) plus two brain concussions just about removes contact sports from the future plans. Anyone involved with any sort of martial art? I'd like to see what is out there
Just about removes...but not quite! My coach is 50+ with two knee replacements and he still gets out on the field every now and again ^_^ As for martial arts, i took judo for a bit and had a lot of fun with that.Took a jui jitsu class that was also quite enjoyable. Are you looking for more of a striking or grappling martial art?

been lurking TL and this thread for a while, decided that today would be a good day to register.
first post: goals
Tulius Age: 25 || Height: 5'97" (182 cm) || Weight: 149 lbs (67,6kg) Starting Date: 06/27/11 || Goal Date: 12/31/11 Training goals -- add 10kg to my bench press, 20kg to my squats, 20kg to my deadlift, do 15 chin-ups/pullups (currently 3x5 56kg BP, 60kg squat, 1x5 74kg DL) Nutrition goals -- eat as much natural food as possible. Bulk at least to 75kg and then cut to carve a 6pack Misc goals -- study more at my free time, stretch to improve hamstring flexibility and help with form
Currently I'm doing SS Practical Programming Novice Program (since June 13). Been working out for a long time (almost 2 years) but with shitty programs/ bad nutrition. Doing 1/2 GOMAD (with low lactose milk) since I was struggling to get enough calories - gained 2kg on it. Also doing IF 16/8 (started it to cut some fat and stuck to it).Last time I measured was at 9-10% BF but no abdominal deffinition at all (some loose skin under the belly, used to be a fat kid in my 17's). Welcome man! glad to have another person on board. Good luck with your goals; I'd say to get yourself measured again because I feel that at 10% BF you would have at least some definition. But I don't know how loose skin would affect it, so I could be wrong :D I just know they can really mess up a lot. Keep at it.
thanks :D
about my body fat: I've been measuring it at the gym for a year, they use the Jackson-Pollock method iirc. in apr/2010 I was at 11.02%, got up to 13% in december (after a fail bulk) and down to 9.87% in may/2011 (after doing IF). my abs got no deffinition at all, guess that besides having little fat I haven't got enough muscle to get ripped. besides that, I used to weigh 77kg in my 17s (pure fat btw) that I lost after my growth ended, so there was some loose skin. first half of this year I tried to gain some strength and muscle mass while burning fat, but it didn't work. At least I preserved all my lean mass. Now I intend to bulk again, but this time increasing weight of the exercise every session, as the SS program recommends, and eating only natural food (a clean bulk). After I get enough lean mass (I think I'll be fine at 75kg), I'll cut again if necessary. that's my plan but any advice is welcome

Sorry for the picture quality, camera phone.
Wish I woulda known about this thing earlier. Ya figure if its sitting on your porch you'd know about it, but that wasn't the case. lol
Todays workout!
Rack Pulls 275 x 5-5-5
Rows 135 x 1 125 x 6 + 4 (Fixed my form the first six my back was rounded like crazy and I didn't notice somehow) 120 x 8 95 x 8
Flat DB Bench (Accident) 55 x 5-5
Low Incline DB Bench Press 55 x 5-5
Incline Flies 27.5 lbs x 8-8-8
Seated Calves 80 lbs, 15-12-12
Full Decline Sit up BW + 45 lb plate x 9-9-9 ----
Man do I love rack pulls. I'm still gonna make a ten pound jump (or more) next time depending on how I feel.
Rows were so screwed up though. 135 was way too heavy and so was 125. 120 was just barely gotten after some english, so I dropped it down to 95 and kept it there. Next time I'll just start out at 120 and work on increasing my reps from 8 to 12 and then up the weight. Right after those, I had this crazy surge of energy. It was nuts. So nuts in fact that I forgot to raise the bench to an incline and kept it as a flat bench. So then I said fuggit, and did two more sets on an incline.
Everything else was pretty much easy. The decline sit ups took a lot out of me and I know I'll just have to work on my reps before I move up in weight again.
Edit: this was also a late workout instead of a morning one. Fyi.

Went in today. Lots of things were discussed. Will post with full details when I manage to compile it later tonight.
At very least both of the surgeons I'm seeing are super buff >.>
