Nerd Upgrades offers a robust and easy-to-use platform for coaches and ex-professionals to provide online lessons to aspiring pro gamers and players dedicated to improvement. We created this platform because we felt there was some lag in the area of multiplayer gaming and most importantly, e-sports. We officially went live March 21st 2013 and were in development since May 2012.

We are a great resource for students and players because booking lessons from your favorite pro or coach has never been safer or easier. We are also a valuable resource to coaches who are looking to take competitive-gaming education to the next level. At the same time, we are helping coaches to secure a stable source of income. Already convinced? You can create an account and get started within minutes!

Nerd Upgrades is bad ass. We don't have enough time to go over every sweet feature, but read on for some of the key aspects that makes Nerd Upgrades the best source for booking lessons.

For starters, we provide a safe and secure system for handling your payments. For the safety of the student and the coach, funds from every lesson are held by Nerd Upgrades until the lesson has been marked as completed by the student. If an issue with a lesson arises, an investigation will be launched in order to resolve the issue fairly.

Secondly, Nerd Upgrades will rock your socks off with our rating and review system. Book with confidence by reading reviews from past students. You can also see how long a coach has been a member of Nerd Upgrades which places some of the power back into your hands and gives you more confidence when selecting a coach.

Over time, the exceptional coaches will build a solid clientele, allowing for great relationships to be formed. We believe that students and coaches can benefit from each other, in this way, for several reasons. One being that motivation is very important - students and coaches can draw inspiration from each other benefiting both parties. Want to browse coaches? Look no further!

Offering coaching lessons without Nerd Upgrades can be an absolute nightmare. Before Nerd Upgrades, potential coaches may have avoided offering such services altogether because of the work involved in managing each and every lesson. With Nerd Upgrades, coaches can set their availability schedule in a very easy-to-use interface. In the account management page, select the "time slots" for which you wish to allow a student to book a lesson. A student can order any number of available time slots, provided they have met all other lesson requirements. Coaches and students can each set their own respective timezones. Nerd Upgrades seamlessly coordinates lesson times and dates without the worry of conflicting timezones or DST.

Once a lesson has been scheduled, it will be marked as "reserved" in your calendar. You can then interact with your students either by using our built-in messaging system or within the lesson management interface. The lesson management system allows you to comment on each lesson, manage expectations with students and report issues. Send other information like Skype, Ventrilo or replays to students in advance, instead of wasting valuable lesson time.

Once a lesson has been conducted, the student can then confirm that the lesson was completed. After that, the price of that lesson will be credited to your account balance. An order may contain more than one lesson, so we have allowed each lesson "session" to be handled separately. We found that doing this keeps management easier, while also allowing you to receive funds as fast as possible.

When a lesson has been marked as "completed" by a student, you may then wish to withdraw your new balance. You can request a withdrawal for any amount at any time. A withdrawal can currently be processed with Paypal or by check. We aim to give a coach everything they need in order to handle business as easily as possible. When new features are requested by coaches, we will be working hard to satisfy those requests.

Another awesome feature is the coaches' profile page. Every coach has one and they are a very integral part of a students' decision to book a lesson! Your profile can be filled with tons of information for your current and potential students. Embed your Twitch.tv stream, live twitter feed and other social media platforms. Enjoy an entire profile page tab dedicated to frequently asked questions. Still interested? Sign up now, Batman!

Games will be added upon request! We will always have the most popular games ready to start offering coaching on. Currently coaches can offer Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm, Dota 2, League of legends and Counter-Strike Global Offensive.

Once you have signed up for an account as a coach, you will be directed to the "my games" section of Nerd Upgrades. Here you can add these games as services you would like to offer to students. Within each game, a coach can add additional information about that game. Provide information like in-game ELO, ladder rank and tournament accomplishments.

Pretty awesome eh? Register an account, Read our FAQ or Browse Coaches.

How do you know the coaches that apply have the quality needed to actually give someone lessons? Do you test them in anyway?

Coaches are reviewed by players who have purchased lessons. Coaching, as in life should be open to anyone with a knack for helping others.

Thank you for your feedback! These password strength limitations were put in for the safety of the coaches and students, but due to your complaint it has already been adjusted!

If you're looking at expanding your game selection, you might want to ask around in the FGC. I've seen a couple posts in Street Fighter forums about people offering to coach, although I doubt they would charge as much as PC gamers.

Also, no offense, but I think the name is quite terrible. It actually sounds like a makeover show on Bravo, and doesn't immediately identify at all with the service provided.

i actually think the name is quite clever. after all, gamers are often associated as nerds, and what better way to improve than get upgrades?

out of curiosity, how long has this site been up? approximate number of students?

No offense, but seems kind of silly to post this when the coach finder function isn't available? Who is currently coaching? I mean I guess you're looking for coaches here to actually build up the function, but it's not exactly a great first impression for people looking for coaching at the moment.

I like the description of your calendar function, but I personally wouldn't bother taking the time to register at the moment to witness it without seeing some coaches that catch my eye.

For coaches, what percentage of profits does your company take for services? I tried looking very briefly and found no information about it.

The site just went live today actually.

I apologize for the inconvenience. This is mainly because of how new the site is. The other reason the site was launched without it is because our thought was that, in the mean time, coaches would promote their profile page, similar to Twitter.

This is a now a number one priority and because of your feedback, expect this to be working with a few hours. EDIT: Now working, in an admittedly archaic form. This feature will be improving drastically over the next few days, but students can now browse coaches. View it here http://nerdupgrades.com/p/coach-finder/

im still confused regarding how much coaches are "payed". maybe because im unfamiliar with paypal
i noticed theres an hourly rate option on the page for coaches. if you set it to 10/hr, are you supposed to receive 10/hr or is there something else going on?

When you read the FAQ the website takes 7% and paypal takes about 2.5-3% so in total if you put your hourly rate at 10$ you will end up with a net 9$ ( aprox )

I think the concept is amazing but the % margin that you take to maintain a basically user content and no-update website is very high. Normal profit margins from websites like Amazon or whatever are lower and offer more customer friendly tools.

For me to actually keep my same money i would need to raise my 10/hour to 11.5/hour and that's a huge incrase in price.

So i wish you good luck with your endeavors and hope coming weeks will give you lots of insight in how to improve.

Thank you for your feedback. Our site was not created to profit, so we absolutely want coaches to be as satisfied as possible, while also being able to continue site operation. The costs involved in running Nerdupgrades comes down to hosting, customer support (handling of lesson issues ect), further development and advertisements.

So far, the professional gamers that we have consulted with on the cost have had only positive feedback. We will continue to evaluate everything as we receive more feedback from coaches.

Six Pool Gaming is an awesome site, but they are very different from Nerd Upgrades. There is no site quite like ours right now.

I tried to register, but wasn't allowed to do so. My browser said it was due to something with the webpage?

Make sure you have the latest browser version. If you have any more issues, please PM me and I will work with you directly.

We will continue to advertise on many sites, in many different ways within our budget. We will also be doing many other things to promote the site in ways that does not cost a lot.

However, coaches should promote their profile page just as they promote their twitter or facebook pages for more direct and consistent business. This is why you won't find any promotion of other coaches on a profile page. We want coaches to direct players to their profile pages for coaching and feel confident in doing so.

So basically the first student a coach gets is a guinea pig to see if it's a decent coach or not. So if it is you and you get a bad coach, you kind of just wasted some money. Sure people can be good at a game but that doesn't mean they would be a good coach either. That's why you see some professional athletes fail as coaches. Good luck to the first set of students. I hope it goes well.

Fixed! Thank you very much for finding this issue.

You should probably hide these errors from the public...

Logging (obviously it's bad to suppress errors without logging) plus global exception handling is like 5-10 minutes work to implement (I am a professional web dev and it wounds me when people don't do this). As an added bonus if you set it up to email support the error, whenever a user gets the error, your support team gets notified .

Saw a Gold and Diamond ranked coach. No one should pay for coaching from someone of that level, they are doing something wrong which in turn would be taught to others, heck I wouldn't take any coaching advice from the majority of Masters players. Seems like its on the student to find a good coach rather than a service offering a selection of good coaches.

Besides that thou it is a nice set of features you offer to people that want to coach. It looks great for a trusted and well known coach that can link you to his profile to help organize his/her coaching sessions but I'm just not sure it will be so good for the students that are browsing your page looking for a coach.

I am gold and I guarantee that I could coach and help someone new to the game or even someone that has been playing for awhile and is stuck in bronze/silver/gold/plat, basically anyone in the stuff league. I am gold because I don't focus on winning, I am currently focusing on my mechanics and shooting for a spending level that's in line with the league I want to end up in.

There are professional sc2 coaches that don't even play the game.

I am pretty sure coaches can offer free games. If they aren't getting anyone that wants to jump into the deep end and get a blind lesson, the coach can offer a couple free lessons to build up his reviews? I don't know maybe I am missing something but it seems like there are a lot of people here hating just for the sake of hating.

In general I don't understand why these types of things exist. You should just get better from readying TL.net and other sites (THERE ARE NO OTHERS <3) and from the struggle. If you are in the struggle and don't understand how to get better, there are even parts of TL.net that explain how to get better. This actually has inspired me to do my part and write up something about how I got into Masters League from a crawl out of bronze. From learning and practice. You don't need coaches. Unless you are so lazy that you need a life coach to inspire you to get on TL.net and read about how to get better............

I love getting coached, its a way more personal experience. I also have extra money from working so its not really a big deal to pay $20 for a couple hours of coaching by someone to see how well they coach me.

They were normally logged, they weren't at that time due to a mistake. Thank you though.

We appreciate your feedback and this was something we put a lot of thought into. We decided that great coaches come in all shapes and sizes and just because you can play at a high level, doesn't necessarily mean you can teach at a high level.

I would also like to point out that many coaches have started offering free lessons to start with, in order to build a reputation on Nerd Upgrades. Check Out https://nerdupgrades.com/ichigotowar/ http://nerdupgrades.com/Zackor/ http://nerdupgrades.com/mikemack/ for instance. We will also be implementing things like featured coaches, coach of the week and achievements that coaches can earn to order to show merit to potential students.

We respect your opinion and we definitely see and understand your side of the argument. However, the topic already heavily discussed in the thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=401334. Please direct all further debate about the subject here guys

Many brilliant coaches have already started offering lessons! We hope that with our site some unknown but great teachers will grow into well known coaches.

However, we're doing our best to let the pros know about us, but we are of humble beginnings - so we'll just continue to provide awesome stuff and they will take notice!

Hey there,

Very nice site and i think it can grow to something very useful.

On to the features i'd like to see:
- Coach finder : desperately needs a sorting feature! By rate/name/gmt/rating. The games column could potentially be gone(since you already choose your game from within the drop-down menu) with a game-specific column (for instance SC2 really needs a race column per coach, so you can immediately see what races they coach and also then sort it that way).
-Maybe the GMT column transformed into zone column (EU/NA etc)? Just an idea for easier "reference".

Nothing else comes to mind for the time being, i'll be sure to add if/when they do.

Good luck with the site

Wow nice! Great idea and platform :D
Gratz!

First wanted to address somethings bit less related in this topic; concerning learning and teaching.
I've started my studies in Psychology many years ago and concerning the topic of learning a lot can be said (and actually has been said ).
1. The most important thing is that a learning experience is different for everyone and even the optimal way to learn stuff is different. (off-topic; do you see what the problem might be with public schooling as we know it ).
So some people benefit the most from reading a lot, trial-and-error, some prefer to think ahead, some find role-models at megahigh level and some find role-models at more moderate levels etc etc. Either solution in itself or a combination of different aspects sums up the perfect learning experience for a certain individual (well, could be, more or less, related to personality types...)
2. It's off course dependent on your own personal goals/capabilities whether or not you need a higher or lower level coach or a certain coaching style. I myself had never ever played RTS before in my life and although I am a real big fan of starcraft2, I find my life to busy to practice a lot. So although offcourse I'd love to be a diamond or masters league I am also very much aware that this would require a shit load of practice for me. But at the same time I think my current level of playing could easily improved in about 1/2/3 hours with a coach even at the platinum level. I mean, since my goal isn't to surpass them but to get a similar level how could it really damage me ;-)

and back to the topic at hand;
I'd like to ask; have you found a reliable way of getting feedback? I mean the one danger I see that could ruin this perfect idea is what I like to call StarcraftFluffyness
I am a huge fan of being nice and treating the rest of the world accordingly, but if you're gonna set-up a system where people have to leave feedback about their coach you will quite easily find yourself in situation where the student has gotten to like his coach and hence be much friendlier about his coaching then might be prudent. (or reversed, a perfectly okay coach getting a shitty review because of some personal dislikes)
The way science handles this troublesome situation is to design questions which, as much as humanly possible, could be measured and reproduced.

I really think you guys are on to something and I wish you luck! :D

Great post and insight WhiteBratt. Maybe it could help them if you had/could provide some feedback questionnaires (like the ones you mentioned) as an example?

I'd certainly be more than interested to check them out myself!

As of now, only students who have booked a lesson may submit a review. If a coach has a problem with a review, we will handle it the way eBay does with seller ratings. Both sides with have a chance to state their case - after that we will decide as a team how to best make both parties satisfied.

Thank you for your feedback good sir.

Sick site! Reminds me of some of the old ones that unfortunately didn't make it. I have signed up as a coach and hopefully can meet some of the requirements for a featured coach.

A suggestion I have would be that in the same list where you search for the coaches, there can be a little button called Advanced Search, or just implement it on the same page. I want to be able to choose the minimum and maximum price for coaching, which region the coach is situated in and also which race the coach is currently playing. For me as a protoss player I would really want to search for a protoss coach, just seems more effecient. So you dont have to scroll through so many pages and even having to click on the coaches to see which race they are.

I know a Grandmaster Zerg can probably still teach the shit out of me, im a protoss player. But I think everyone feels the most comfortable being tought by their own race (Starcraft 2 race, nothing else!)

Sick looking site but I noticed pressing the back button breaks the search and you have to search again, asks to send a form again.

Two suggestions:

1. an option for coaches to offer bulk-rated pricing
2. to filter coaches by rating and then # of reviews ; )

are you sure this will work? don't you want to implement sth like a "minimum wage" or set defined wages in several tiers?

cause there are tons of free coaches. don't misunderstand me, I bet they're doing a great job, but on the other hand they're ruining the prices of the other ones. so far the only thing you mention as advantage is the management of the lessons, which sounds a bit ironical for me, cause everyone who can manage it to play starcraft on a high level shouldn't have any problems with managing a few lessons per week.

there are coaches who prepare for their lessons and invest a lot of time in their students, it doesn't make any sense for them to register. you get thrown into a bucket of coaches where you mostly can't compete with the price, and in addition you have to raise your wage since you have to give away a piece of the cake for nearly nothing, there isn't even a "real" system which secures the quality.

Basically everyone can register, or people who are still in school and have free time can do it for fun. I don't say this is a bad thing, but from an entrepreneurial point of view it doesn't make any sense, since good coaches can find enough people who are looking for a coaching without your site, without giving away a piece of the cake and without having to compete with anyone who does it "for free". they simply don't need you, and the problem is that you need those coaches if you want to pay the traffic and other site related stuff.

So the free coaches aren't only ruining the prices on the site, but also cost you money due to the effort you have to do to make coaching for them possible.

Hey, I am signed as a coach, and there are a few things you should look into:
-The time you can choose that a student must have between ordering and havibg a lesson should be custom, I'd like to be able to choose between 2 days and 1 hour, depending on what day. Also all in between.
-A built in money back guarantee for the coaches that choose that. I would give money back to any unsatisfied student, they don't like it, they don't pay
-I am i the middle of the list between tenths of other master coaches ciaching for 5usd/hour. The chance to be picked is slim at best... Why not have a bar on the side where random coaches, with price, league and rating pop up, so that I have some chance at least.
-You should contact tournaments and offer free coaching from a coach that is willing to be seen, and that will boost knowledge of that coach and your site.
-The rating system is what a coach is dependant on. I wouldn't pick someone without a rating over someone with if they had the same pricing. You should work towards having all coaches getting at least one student that also can rate them by having them as prices, showing them on the start page (maybe with a banner like 'try our unrated coaches!'.
-The student should have to send a short message where he/she answers questions that the coach have for them that is then either found on his page that only he can read or straight to his inbox

Sorry for rant, but had to advertise myself on Reddit to find a student :/
