Happy New Year!!! By the way, those of you who may have seen this on Reddit or Youtube, I've extended the giveaway to January 10 so I can share it with Team Liquid as well
Lately I have been talking about how I am excited to be in Korea and how I want to be a source for bringing the Korean scene to the community at large.. I started a thread asking for advice on what people wanted to see, and I really appreciate all the feedback I got (a lot of people wanted to see non-SC2 stuff in Korea, and I'm already working on a Vlog showing the Korean palaces in Seoul). Well, in the spirit of the holidays, I'm also going to literally give some of you something from the Korean scene!
Some of you have been giving me feedback on what kind of swag you would want me to give away, and now I am finally here to announce my holiday giveaway that I've been planning and putting together for some time! I'll first get straight down to what I'll be giving away, including:
* 2 DT35 Keyboards Signed by SlayerS MMA * 2 DT35 Keyboards Signed by EG HuK * 2 Mouse pads Signed by FXO Leenock * 2 Mouse pads Signed by IM MVP * 2 Mouse pads Signed by Tastosis (and/or maybe some signed handsomenerd.com stuff) * Diablo 3 Beta Key * Mouse pads or other stuff signed by me if people want them instead of the other swag * And a partridge in a pear tree
If you're wondering what a QSENN DT35 keyboard is.. + Show Spoiler +
...it's a simple keyboard but one that lots of progamers use and that is really smooth and nice to use for mysterious reasons. MVP, Stork, Jaedong use it, for instance.
Now, I've already given away a few of these things to some of my current fans on youtube, twitter, and facebook... but I'm sure you're wondering.. how can I get one of these?! Well, there are a few ways to be eligible. Firstly, I want to give back to the community, and to those of you who may be a fan of mine but that I haven't had a chance to connect with in some way yet... so I'm letting everyone know that I'll be giving away some more stuff in about 1 week (originally through the 12th day of Xmas, but has been extended now), by selecting random Youtube subscribers, Twitter followers, and Facebook likers!
Yes, that's all you have to do, and I'll be picking random people from my lists..
It would be jolly of you to follow the folks on twitter you want to win stuff from as well: @SlayerSMMA, @LorangerChris, @sc2immvp, @FXOLeenock, @artosis, @callmetasteless, @bcolayco
Don't like social media? Or hate my guts but still want to win? I'm not trying to be pushy or exclusive here! A second way to maybe get some stuff is that I'll also be streaming at http://www.twitch.tv/moletrap and giving away to random stream viewers over the next week...
AND... I'll be giving away one of the items (maybe more) to someone in this thread! So as to avoid people spamming just to win, and to make this perhaps useful.. if your comment is randomly selected, to win it must be at least one of A) a creative haiku about the person(s) whose signature you want to win (or about Diablo), B) a story of how eSports has brought people together, or C) something meaningful related to any other discussions that may arise (like complimenting a haiku or discussing someone's story) - this thread doesn't have to be just entirely entries, but I'm going to double check to make sure you are in the spirit of the thread (not spamming or insulting other entries) before awarding anything. So just have fun writing and talking about your poems and stories
I hope you all enjoy each other's poems and inspirational comments.. remember, this community is awesome.. be excellent to each other, not just during the holidays!
Starting January 10 when I wake up KST, people will be randomly selected (random.org number generator) from a list of people subscribed on a given social media site and will be contacted on that site. They will have 3 days to get back to me, since I know a lot of accounts are older and not really active anymore and I don't want to wait around forever. If someone hasn't gotten back to me in 3 days I'll select someone new from that list and contact them, and they'll have 3 days, etc. People who I have already selected before the contest started will have until the end of the contest, January 10, to get back to me. People who are already subscribed/following before this will be just as eligible as new fans. On a first come, first serve, basis those selected will get to pick which item they want most, and anyone can ask for a mousepad or something else signed by me if they prefer that to what is still available. Following people who signed stuff on twitter is not required but highly recommended. Partridge in pear tree not actual prize. No guarantees on when you'll get stuff but I'm going to try to get everything in the mail at least by the end of January.
My family and I always watch gsl live although sometimes it is very late, and we really enjoy watching it and to discuss about it sometimes:D we get to have a chance to get together as a family and do something fun. We really enjoy the casters and we sometimes play 1v1 (2 starcraft accounts) with each other. I beat my brothers and it's really fun. It's better then playing board games.
Ahh the great night of christmas eve where 3 of my good friends and I sat on ventrilo, each of us otherwise would've been alone and miserable... Instead... we sat together (virtually), and each showcased our bad macro and "a move" abilities while we played team games until 3 A.M....We always meet on ventrilo just to watch MLG and GSL, and frequently get into balance debates (our zerg friend always starts them ; P ). SC2 really has been fun, spectating and playing, and i know my friends feel the same.. Cheers to another year of SC2! In hopes of really great games from the pros, and great casting to go along with it. Thanks Moletrap for casting our beloved Esport and of course for this cool giveaway
Im a man of few words All I wish to say is that this is very awesome of you Moletrap! Good luck to all participants, have fun with your prize if you get one
Tastosis signed stuff would be insanely cool to have, as would MVP! Also would make an awesome birthday present! *cough 29th january*. Hopefully my wish for this year will come true. (To get a job in eSports :>) Good luck and congratulations to those lucky people who win. ^^
really nice contribution to the community and id love to get any of these gr8 items, also, are there any restrictions on who can win?(kinda used to seeing something about my not being able to particapate due to where i live)
35th generation Dark Templar Stay alert people, HuK plays hardball
First verse is somewhat reference to the keyboard DT35. Second and third verse is a refrense to Jim Raynor's quote "Stay alert people, they play hardball" about the protoss race. Both verses is about HuK's race
I wish to share a story since I am not poetic at all.
I guess my story will more about how sc2 brought peoeple together.
When I started sc2 I played a lot. I eneded up finding an amazing coach who helped with my play a lot. Ohter the past year we get together for weekly lessons. They used to be more about improving. Now they seem to take on a much different role. Our hour sessions become the two of us having fun for an hour. Being able to talk balance or talk about general sc2 news. We have become friends through sc2. We chat often wether we have a session or not. There has been times where I have sat him down and told him to watch a replay so he could improve a aspect of his play. Even though he is my coach still. I am able to offer insight into his play. We have become much more equals now then just student and coach. He has become a good friend and someone who likely knows more aobut me than anyone in my family.
I guess to add aanother story of mine would be that of a friend of mine. They played sc2 a bit before I did. Only by a month or two. They eventually got out of it but I stuck with it. I played a ton. Now they recently got back into sc2 and through that we have been talking more and more (we didn't talk often before) Through our love of esports we have a friendship that is closer than it ever was. I am able to have fun with them and help them out when I can.
Maybe another story as well. A few months ago I decided to buy a sc2 kr account. This was before you could buy a taiwanese account and get on korean server. Anyways, I ended up meeting this one guy who spoke decent english and was a really cool guy to chat with. We would also talk about how maybe one day he would win GSL or be in code A (he was high masters at the time). But through him I met another guy. He introduced himself and we starting talking a lot. He would be on almost always the same time I was on so we would play a ton of games together. We always had fun and we talked about sc2. Eventually we got to talking about more than that. about living in Korea, about life, music, the world around us.
I don't know why but him and I get along really well. He was a complete stranger when I met him, but he has become a really close friend and a awesome guy to chat with. We often talk about music, and our shared love of Park-Bom of 2ne1. He has introduced me to so many people and practice partners. He has also been there when I just needed someone to talk to. With everything going on in my life. I finally know someone I can turn to to have some fun. I cannot thank him enough for everything he has helped me with since I met him. I cannot wait to meet him in a few months when I go down to see him. Will be one of the highlights of my year.
I guess to put all these stories I have told into one consice paragraph. I have met and encountered so amyn different people during my time playing sc2 and sc:bw. I have learned more in one year then in my entire life. I cannot imagine my life without these people now which I didn't know only a year and a half ago.
At long last, Baal slain, What's that!? Army of cows? Adventure awaits.
Thanks for all the hard work you do for us Moletrap! For all the pains you have given me through my GSL sleep schedule, the least you can do is grant me a key! j/k Moletrap hwaiting!
well, at school, i have a lot of Korean friends that love to play SC2 and BW, and we do team games, monobattles, ladder partnerships, the whole shebang. the thing is, we were actually mostly enemies before, but it happened that one of my buddies had brought his computer, and was playing a beta version of SC2 back in 2010 (wow its been a LONG time). well, being starcraft geeks, we all crowded around and watched him play, and we soon realized that we all loved to not only be good at SC, but also to have fun. We ended up bonding over the game, and these days we often stay up till 5am together watching GSL and going to each other's houses to watch MLG or Dreamhack. we also get into very heated discussions about balance and different strategies, but we end up back on the same point, that we love SC2, BW, and all the other eSports out there
It was the 2nd and 3rd season of the Team Leagues and me and my friend Dennis where watching the broadcast together via skype (were from 2 different countries). We were both cheering for the SlayerS team as we are to this day BoxeR fanboys all the way back from broodwar, and when the ace matches needed to be played a new hope arose: MMA. With BoxeR not looking as strong in SC2 (primarily taking on the coaching role which we enjoy and hate at the same time ) it was such a pleasant sight to see a guy take the mantle and carry some of BoxeRs spirit into the new game! We named him True Son of BoxeR after his match vs DRG and his showing that to this day ^^
Thanks for sharing the Korean Scene Moletrap. Good Luck over there
Tastosis: The heterosexual nerd baller couple screamed in unison, "SO MANY BANELINGS" but Cliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidddddddeeeeeeeeeeee, the greatest player in the world, did not call GG.
EGHuK: Chris Loranger, the #1 Foreign Protoss, a Canadian turned Korean, is a master troll.
Happy new year Moletrap, always liked your casting for GOM when others didn't
This actually happened, I found him during practice before day 1 had started and I asked him "please win MLG." 2 days later I was screaming because he beat mma in the finals

My hero <333
Moletrap I love what you're doing, you should get progamers to sing christmas carols :D
Thanks a lot for all the great content and giveaways, I don't have twitter but found you on facebook then wasn't sure it was you with that great big beard I like it you should keep it for the upcoming GSL season !
Moletrap, you are so awesome, a true gentleman and a scholar. You casters (and players) give so much to us by doing what you do and yet you do even more! How are we going to repay your kindness? Just keep on doing what you're doing, because you and the SC community is awesome.
my setup is really alwfull (beyboard, mouse,no mat) so i hope i can change something because otherway i dont have money for the gaming stuffs taht i so want.
Dude ~ Moletrap, you're doing this give away? - Totally awesome. Mwahaha ~ I am already following you on twitter. :D <3 ~ Good luck with the contest!
As for A, B or C - I choose: B) a story of how eSports has brought people together
I am going to start this amazing story off by quoting something I recently wrote that I am unsure if I could write better at this moment:
"One of the great things about gamers though is their ability to come together, despite language barriers and distance. What do I mean by this? I mean they come together to make a difference in each others lives and the lives of complete strangers they have never met, by supporting, participating or helping out with charity events." - Tesla ~ Gamer Blog #11
Things like this have been proven time and time again. That no matter the situation, no matter the religion, gender, skin color or even the country someone is from, they have come together to make a difference. Examples of this generosity has been shown so many times through events like the following:
Each and every one of these events have their own story to tell, but together they show just how caring the community happens to be. When you take a look at just all of these charities listed and know that its not even 1/20th of the charity events ran in all the E-Sports community, it shows you just how much the community comes together for a common goal and to make a difference. These together, I offer you as a story of how great and powerful the gaming community truly is and how E-Sports has brought people together - All around the world.
Well Starcraft 2 has definitely brought me together with a lot of people mostly online. From watching several streams across a whole array of sites I've made plenty of new friends that I now talk to and play games together (most surprisingly it's NOT SC2, more Dota 2 and such). Still trying to get more of my friends involved, I've even heard some families gather around to watch it in their lounge room which would be great, but I've moved out of home a long time ago. Next on my list is to attend a major SC2 event (which is hard to come by in Australia) and meet even more awesome people there and the players!
Thank you very much Moletrap for doing this ! It's not just about the material and sentimental value of these products in my opinion, but things like this happen only on TeamLiquid to be honest. At least, with this size. This is something what only the StarCraft2 community is capable! Not only you ofcourse and to be fair with others aswell, but everytime I wisit TeamLiquid basically you can get some stuff, be it free or paid.
I would like to give a huge THANK YOU from the TL community if I'm allowed to to this! And ofcourse, MMA is the best ! <3

I went to a live event in Copenhagen to cast a SteelSeries event with my real life friend from college, Addicted, I was expecting it to be similar to the events we did on a weekly basis, preparing and casting game after game that we get into, however, it was nothing like it what so ever. I have never felt such community presence like I did in those 24 hours there, the players we mett we had only known by their online alias and the play we had scene but a few days earlier, it was hard at first because we had no idea what they looked like at all, but from seeing all the screens on the ladder starting screen, we could figure out soon enough. I have to give a huge thanks to all the players who play in any tournaments, online or offline and how it's such a fantastic feeling to be there, enjoying the games with tens, hundreds or thousands of other people simultaneously.
I wanted to say this ever since I came back, and it just happened to coincide with this thread, a big thanks to moletrap for offering everyone this opportunity.
Slicing through monsters Finding loot, gaining power All to save the world
DIABLO 3!!!!!!!!!
Great idea for a giveaway!
And I will tell a story too:
At MLG Providence I watched Haypro kill his way through the bracket on Sunday. Early in the morning there were only a few people watching his games, but as the day went on the crowds grew. Finally there was a giant ball of people watching him play on the Alienware Stage. I was lucky to be standing right behind him and right beside all the other Liquid team members. There were so many people pulling for Haypro. I loved being a part of that. :-)
There's a man known as MMA from team slayers. He was always such a good player. And in him we confided, for his matches were one sided; he became a badass nerd slayer. (not haiku but poem nonetheless)
Feelings of gratitude and pride in eSports meet the aura of honor and warmth from a fellow truly handsome eSports nerd.
here is my esport story: Right after SC2 was released I moved from Cali to Finland... My friends and I stay connected by hanging out on skype watching GSL, other tournaments and the occasional team games. GSL/eSports keeping our friendships strong :D + Show Spoiler +
yeah we'd still be friends w/o esports, but this is a great way for us to feel close
I would really enjoy one of these Keybords I ll go to Southkorea for one Year in a few month to live there AND meet all the great players and so on. I think this is just because of SC II and SC BW. and to play on a keybord like they do would be awesome ^^ GL HF ScG^Abonnen
HuK is the reason I got into more than just casually playing/watching sc2, having a keyboard signed by him would be so awesome.
All of those prizes seem awesome though so I'd be pretty hyped to win anything(some handsome nerd gear from the handsome nerds themselves? mousepad signed by magikarp.. err MVP? yes plz)
I hope i'll be able to win tt Big fan of HuK, having a keyboard signed by that boss would make my life complete ;; Thanks for making this giveaway Moletrap, you're the man! <3
If I am in to win some gear i don't care from whom it will be signed, but if i win a diablo 3 beta key OMFG i will go kill myself from happiness!!!! Moletrap this is a sick giveaway i am your subscriber in youtube for mote then a year i think! Even if i don't win you will still be one of the best in the scene i love you <3
Very swell of you to do this Moletrap. I've seen a lot of your casting in tournaments, but I've never actually tuned in to your stream. I'd like to give it a try. Can anyone fill me in on when Moletrap usually streams, and what type of content he provides? (ladder games, replays, random shiz)
B) My father did not support internet shopping or any videogames I played until I showed him the glory that is starcraft 2! I thank the game itself for opening his eyes heh. The reason I say internet shopping is because I always wanted a GSL ticket but I don't have a credit card yet. Needless to say, starcraft convinced him to buy a ticket online and now we watch it together while my mom facepalms :D
Good stuff, keep up the good casts too! it seems a lot of people are enjoying them
In HuK I see the greatness of mankind Before us all, to gaze upon with pride. A stronger force is difficult to find, And only mountains take it all in stride.
Despite Code S was out of reach this time, Give that no heed, he will be back again To give his fans some nerdy chills sublime, To show the signs of his impending reign.
He justifies the foreign fight for all. There is no player with such might and will, And though he lacks the height to make him tall, It just augments his soaring grade of skill.
Although superfluous, wish him some luck. The cheer of 2012 should be: "Go HuK!"
Would love to get the Diablo 3 key Diablo 2 was the first game i ever played on computer when i was still very young (7 or 8). I didnt get the whole meaning of it at this stage and when i found a key in a tresure box i searched for a door to open because i thought thats the sense of the game . Some years later i came back to the game and played my first char throught all difficulties and started to participate in forums and stuff. Then some people asked me to play in their hardcore party and i agreed. At the start it felt frustrating and i died quite alot but after like a year i got my first 99 char on hc and felt like invulnerable lol. This game got me hooked to esports and from there i made my way to warcraft 3 and finaly starcraft 2 nowadays i still play alot of good old diablo with friends because its relaxing and you dont have to be as concentrated as in rpg´s which allows some funny conversation with mates

My brother, and two friends, are teaching English in South Korea. I spend a lot of my time seeing day to day life there.
I just bought my first GSL ticket this month, and am happy to see the production continually improving. Good work on the casts, thanks again for the community charity!
Me and my brother have never really had a friendly relationship, and depending on the situation Starcraft II can help it swing both ways! Sometimes, when we're both raging and being n00bs about whats 'op', it will generally frustrate both of us but when we're both doing well, we're (almost) friends (at times). Anyways, out of all of those my favorite player is EGHuK, but anything signed by a Starcraft icon would be amazing!
It would be so cool to win something from this Moletrap, I met my best friend through esports and winning something like this would blow both of our minds.
Moletrap - thank you very much!Amazing giveaway!!!nerdgasms all over~~~~ CANNOT wait for the moletrap in Seoul vlog series! I love seeing different cultures!
Thank you for all your work for the community and keep up the great GSL casting
I promoted Esport on my school and with succes I had a couple of people giving me feedback about how much fun they had watching DreamHack even though they had no idea what StarCraft II was before I hope they will convince more people that it's not just a video game, its way more then that !
Wow nice giveaways!! I really like these keyboards, because SC2 WoL is my first PC-Game i ever played, and it stoked me up to play more and more.. And now since the release im playing Starcraft and its my first game i ever played on PC, here and there i played some PES but i never want to know so much about the game like it is in Starcraft... Yeah this is my short story, and thanks Moletrap for these awesome giveaways. Peace out
What really never cease to amaze me in e-Sports are the live events. I’m not talking about the crowd-sizes or the prize-pool. The thing which always astonishes me is the complete dead silence from the crowd itself. Everyone sitting at the event wants to hear the casters. It’s not like other sports with cheerleading and vuvuzelas and whatnot. Everyone in the crowd is there for the same reason. To watch their favourite player be casted by their favourite caster. That’s a thing unique to e-Sports and it brings us nerd together <3
I don’t think I will see Leenock at a Dreamhack, that’s why I’d like a mousepad signed by him : )
I will too post a story. I was at the computer lab of my university and was having a short break during which I watched some GSL. I was so caught up in one of the games that I actually shouted when the guy I was cheering for won. The next thing I know some people from my class I have never even talked to because of our very different interests stood by me and started watching. They asked what was I watching and I explained to them how sc and sc2 are not only huge games but are successful e-sports and require incredible skill to be good at. I expected the "normal" reaction like "Lol nerds should get a life" or "Gamez r 4 k1dz". But during that time the game I was watching was in its most heated moments, Tastosis was shouting loudly and the voice was escaping my headphones. So I did not get the expected reaction, those people who were not even remotely gamers or nerds, actually appreciate the intense moment, they each grabbed a chair and stood there to watch the games with me. After simple and very short explanation of how things work, they were just as excited and fascinated by the games as I was when started watching starcraft: broodwar tournaments. We even started commenting on the games and such, It was my first time watching SC with someone else (cause non of my actual friends do) and it was so fun. We spent 5 hours during which we should have been preparing our projects, watching StarCraft and StarCraft 2.

When I saw this, I first thought of how every MLG brings like 5 of my friends together and we watch the event all weekend. Everything started by accident, while I was playing sc2, a couple of my friends came over and started asking about the game. They don't play it, but always watch MLGs with me, which is awesome!
Btw I love your giveaway and wouldn't mind one of the things
My brother, a few of his friends and I all hooked up a computer via HDMI to our TV, and watched all the recent MLG's together (Columbus, Providence, etc). After a game we would talk about why and how someone won or lost, and going into the next match, pick our favorite to win. It was a lot of fun. :p
If i were to get a d3 beta key....might make the crap storm of my life recently somewhat bearable. But i guess i can wait another year for the game to come out. already been 4.
ANOTHER HAIKU =O ----------------------------------------- This Terran is so pro He's "power overwhelming" Eats nerds for breakfast ----------------------------------------- my main haiku is the mma as mma is just SLIGHTLY more my favorite player than mvp. =\
I want a keyboard....It is impossible to find in canada, and it costs too much to get shipped from anywhere else.......i like how your twitter pick is literally a moletrap
I guess it's story time then. It's not really about bringing people together for eSports, but I'd like to share it anyway.More like a blog issue, maybe I'll even blog it, I don't know. Just thought this might be a cool story.
I'm writing on my phone, so this is really challenging.
Since my life is totally depressing, I guess I'll post the story of "How did I become a bachelor frog cliché ?" Also, I'm French and I guess this won't be well written. But I'd still like any of these gifts, so ...
Back in ~2000, I was 7 or so.Life grew more expensive in Paris, so we moved in a more modest neighborhood, closer to the suburbs.
There wasn't much to do there, as I did not know anyone.I didn't have any console. PC was cool enough, but my mom needed it, so I couldn't play my favorite games. At the time, Age of Empires 1, in which I just did walls and guys and waited, and Half life 1 in which I couldn't understand anything, but it was still awesome because I had a motherf'ing CROWBAR.
So there was a cybercafe near my apartment. So I just went in and played games, and there was THIS guy. Basically he looked like aTnSocke, with glasses and a ponytail. And a bit fatter.Nerd stereotype basically.[Don't hit on me guys, now I kind of look like him]. But really nice.So I didn't know what to play, I told him I liked strategy games.
And I played Warcraft 3.I did a bit of the campaign, then he shown me multiplayer. Not regular multiplayer, custom maps.I really liked risk revolution. Also, BFME (Remember guys, NAME RACE OR KICK).I actually had a team for these.
And someday, he showed up, and was like "Hey guys, this is the sequel for Warcraft 3 ! It was a pain in the *ss to find, almost every shop was sold out, but I got two ! We're gonna make accounts for the cyber, just pay 5 euros."
Yep.You guessed what happened for the next ~6 or so f'ckin' years.
To sum it up quickly, I became a nerd, then HAD to learn English AND orthograph (in French and English) to roleplay a bit, and play on English servers.
Somehow, this brought me culture and maturation.Maybe because I had to fake being ~18 or so to enter decent guilds. Was easy enough actually.I don't know.
Eventually, this, mixed with Adolescence brought me a strange sense of pride, and finally sourness.
So I went to 4chan, and almost naturally found /v/, where I met people like me, who hated everyone and everything.Including video games and fun.
Eventually the cyber cafe was replaced with a burger shop, and I realized WoW was becoming crap.
So here I am, playing sc2.
True story. And you'd make me a happier man with any of these.
I'd love to have keyboard with Huk's signature in it, Huk was the first player i saw playing SC2 and since that I've been trying to get better as a protoss Currently in Platinum. Also Nice that some people do giveaways, as you said, this community is awesome.
When I first visited the college I am currently attending, I met a guy.
I browsing around the dorms, skipping one of the more boring meetings of "pre-frosh weekend", when I saw an open room door. I poked my head inside and saw two guys working on a laptop together. I wanted to start a conversation, but I couldn't find the courage to muster any words, I just watched quietly from outside of the room. After a few seconds, I noticed someone had taped pictures of Mudkips all over the walls of the room, and I saw my chance.
"I luurrvvee mudkips!" I declared, stepping into the center of the doorway.
The two men paused and turned to look at me, suddenly seeming much older and intimidating than I had original thought. I panicked and blushed, shuffling a few steps backwards and starting to mutter an apology for disturbing them.
Suddenly, one of the guys let out the brightest smile I'd ever seen and stood up, welcoming me. I talked to both of them and introduced myself, feeling relieved. The guy who had given me that amazing smile was sweet, hilarious and just an absolutely amazing person. Meeting and spending time with him really convinced me that was the college I wanted to go to, despite the fact he was graduating that year and would not be there when I attended.
We exchanged numbers and I found myself downloading skype as soon as I got home to keep up communication. He was great to talk to, geeky, intelligent, kind and had a sense of humor that no one else could match. I found myself with the biggest crush on him and every time we talked it only grew. After talking for a while, I found out that he was a Starcraft player. While I had played many video games, I had always avoided RTSs, just figuring they weren't my type. He talked so passionately about the game, I decided I wanted to share that passion with him.
Knowing he was a really skilled player, I was reluctant to discuss the game much with him. I worked at Game Stop at the time, so I read through the Starcraft user manual when I found myself with a few seconds to spare at work. I tried to memorize stats and come up with counters to each unit while reading, but I felt oddly overwhelmed. With some searching, I found a few videos of old matches he had played and cheered him on while watching, even though the games were years old. Watching his games taught me more than anything else had, but I still had some sort of fear that if I started trying to play Starcraft that I would realize he was on a whole different level of human intelligence and skill, that I would just shame myself. No matter how often I told myself those fears were silly, I still managed to avoid playing Starcraft.
When I finally got to college, I was overwhelmed by all of the new people and finally living on my own. He visited the college during the first weekend after freshman orientation, as many alumni do, to see his underclassmen friends and greet me. When I saw him, I completely panicked. I was never good at expressing my more complicated feelings and I wasn't able to express how I felt. In fact, I managed to completely turn him away.
After he left, I felt completely lost and confused. I rewatched a few of his matches, then tried my best to ignore the game and thoughts of him. Perhaps I really wasn't on his level of play.
A few months later, I found myself going to Blizzcon. I saw him there and he was as kind, happy and courteous as ever, but he was busy with the Starcraft tournaments. I talked to him for a few minutes the first day, just enough to make me start kicking myself again, and then we parted ways.
It took me a long time to decide what to do with the Starcraft 2 beta key I had received in my Blizzcon goodie bag. Eventually, I gave it to one of my good friends and forced them to promise me the first friend invite they received. Unfortunately, the promise was broken and I was left raging about how I could have just sold the card or given it to someone who would uphold such promises. The next friend invite was mine, though.
I nervously downloaded the client and logged in for the first time. I had already decided that I was going to try to perfect Zerg, as I felt that the race would best suit my desired play style. I played game after game, messing up my micro and macro, taking years to select units and forgetting requirements for upgrades.
After a lot of practice, I started getting the hang of it. I even won a few games and found myself able to rank decently. However, that didn't restrain the harsh words of my opponents. I was told numerous times that I was "a waste of a beta key," along with other insults and complaints. I felt oddly alienated from the community, unlike I had with other games. Still, I pressed forward and practiced in my spare time.
When the time came around, I ordered the SC2 CE, eager for the art and other goodies. A number of members of my WoW guild also began playing and I was happy to join them. I honed my skills and started practicing with one of my guild members for our guild tournament. He was my personal coach and gave me a lot of insight and game basics that I would have taken much longer to gain otherwise.
The guild tournament finally came around. I was excited and nervous. I found out who my first opponent was and started studying his strategy. It was a terran player who enjoyed blocking themselves in their base and rushed straight to battlecruisers. He used the same strategy in every game I saw him play.
I played terribly. Actually, I played fairly well, but I was still so timid with the game, I didn't realize I had multiple times where I could have just crushed him if I moved all of my forces in. A strategic nydus worm in the back of his base should have assured my victory, but his command center escaped with 20 hp. Yes, no exaggeration, 20. Of course, I realized after he had flown away that I had messed up and forgot to unload my last 5 units. After over a full hour of gameplay, I lost due to diminished resources and his battlecruisers.
I cried. Literally. I just broke down and cried. The amount of frustration built up in that hour washed over me at once. I knew I had played poorly, I knew that the victory should have been mine so many times, and yet I had lost.
The second game he tried a different strategy, and I beat him in under 15 minutes.
The third game was yet another grueling, painful game, lasting over 45 minutes. I lost in the end and felt completely exhausted. I was upset and utterly ashamed of myself. My hands had been shaking during the full 2+ hours of gameplay and I couldn't believe I preformed so poorly. I just laid back in my bed and cried. I thought of the guy who had started my interest in Starcraft and felt even worse. If he had seen how I preformed, how would he feel?
I played occasionally with friends in custom games, but began avoiding Starcraft as much as possible. Then, one day, he randomly sent me a soundclip. It was a story that was really touching and encouraged me to shrug off my bad feelings and start playing again.
Even to this day, I often find myself mesmerized when I listen to him. When he casts, I smile and laugh along with everyone else watching, but find myself feeling a little crushed inside, too. Some part of me just wants to reach through my laptop and grab his attention once again. Instead, I listen quietly and cheer him on from here.
So, yes, I play Starcraft. I'm not great at it. In fact, I'm not even good at it, but I still love my little zerglings and I try to be the best queen I can.

LOL your family is watching sc2 with you? I gotta say man im jealous. Youre happy man
The keyboard cus I have much respect for Huk and his performance as a foreigner, Leenock is also quite inspirational as I am a Zerg player myself and he is performing very well at around my age.
In terms of Diablo 3, this game is just going to be amazing and I check every day for that damn release date. Barbarian <3
wow, there's no specific reason why you'd decide to pick me, but im a HUGE fan of HuK, i watch his stream all the time and use some of his builds.. (1 gate expo against terran for example). he may not the 'best' but he's still very good and its inspirational to see someone so dedicated to pro gaming and travelling everywhere to participate in so many tournaments.
I'd really love that dt 35 keyboard :D
