What is SC2 Tips? SC2 Tips is an Android/iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad app that contains a collection of the best tips known to the SC2 community. Our team, Ambitious Beavers, read through hundred of tips from numerous sources, filtered out the best ones, verified them for accuracy, and took in game screenshots to show proper execution.
Why would I want an app containing information that is readily available on TL and other websites? What we’ve found is that there are literally hundreds of tips scattered across various webpages. These sources are either too distributed or contain a list that is too long for anyone to sensibly read through, process, and learn from. And worst of all, many of these tips are inaccurate or outdated due to new patches. Our goal in creating SC2 Tips is to have a central place for practical and up-to-date tips that are useful to the community.
About SC2 Tips The tips are categorized into General, Protoss, Terran, and Zerg tabs for easy navigation. You can add any tip to your Favorites tab or email them to a friend to share. Swipe back and forth to go between tips or double tap for a random tip.
We’ve spent many hours reading and filtering out the best and most useful tips, and poured in countless hours taking in game screenshots to show proper execution. We’ve tried our best to make the app intuitive and easy to use. We’ll also continue to add new tips and update the current ones based on the latest patches to make sure you’ll always have the best and most up to date tips.

I think it is great what you guys are doing. Only thing is that I do not think many will buy this app as the community can't be completely sure this app contains reliable information. Also, future patches could affect some tips. Maybe this as a free app would have been excellent.
|
Agreed unless we have heard that it has reliable updating etc then paying for it may be worthwhile
|
I agree with the comments above, unfortunately i think it would be better use as a free app because i couldnt justify the price over something which i could go to the 1000 tips thread and see for myself. And as said above, patch notes and without people being able to trust in you updating it
|
great idea, but i dont have an iOS
any chance of an android version anytime soon?

All tips in the app have be verified for accuracy.
Also, you can be assured that we'll keep the app updated based on the latest patches. Everyone on Ambitious Beavers is very passionate about SC2. We follow the progaming scene very closely and play SC2 almost on a daily basis.

The 1000 tips thread is a great reference, but unfortunately the list is so massive that few people bother to read through all the tips. And even if they did, it's very time consuming to process and extract out the useful tips from the not so useful ones. There are also several inaccurate and out of date tips in there.
And as mentioned in the above reply, we're very passionate about Starcraft 2 and the progaming scene. We'll keep the the app up to date and add in additional tips with each update. We'll also be adding in Heart of the Swarm tips once that's released.

We definitely have an Android version planned, but everything depends on the community feedback. If people like what we've done, then we'll expand to Android and other platforms. But if there is little interest in our app, then there isn't a strong incentive for us to develop for other platforms.

Great idea! I'd be more than happy to pay a dollar for it. However, you should note that blizzard has shut down people who charged money for apps about their games, specifically wow. while I support your right to try and make a buck off this, that's something you should watch out for.
Anyways, keep up the good work!

We also have a few other SC2 related apps planned. We hope to continue developing SC2 related apps full time and really appreciate your support!

haha looks like we have to tell all our friends with iphones to buy the app so the developers can expand to android and blackberry

We'll keep the Playbook in mind if the app proves popular.

How many tips are there currently?

I've bought the app and looks great! thank you

80 tips right now, all with in game screenshots. We'll also add more tips with each update.

This is a great idea, I would definitely buy this app if it was available for Android, I hope you guys are able to expand to there one day. =)

You if you guys developed this on something like the Rhodes framework then developing it on all major smart phones would be a breeze. Also with a RhoSync server it's super easy to push updated information to the applications. Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestion aike. We also just found out about PhoneGap today, which does something similar to what you're suggesting. We'll look into it in the coming days/weeks.

Replies like these will definitely help in getting an Android version. If a lot of people ask for it, we'll put off work on our next app and focus on getting an Android version of SC2 Tips out ASAP.

I work for an indie dev, so I know how hard it is to get a product moving. I'll pitch in my 99c.
There's a strange psychological barrier between "free" and "99c" but they're essentially the same in the long run.
|
i want a smartphone now T.T
|
|
The amount of people asking for this to be free is hilarious. Do you know how pathetic you sound?
You won't pay 99c to support an indie developer who has made a pretty nifty app? If you can afford SC2 and a computer on which to play it, you can afford 99c to support them.

The demographic being targeted (by posting on TL) is intelligent, active/savvy computer users. If they aim to give tips (created by common players, to common players) they shouldn't really expect money. Sure its 99 cents, but people could easily watch Day9, read the tip thread, or watch the MILLIONS (atleast) of the education/tutorial YouTube or other videos.
Sure they're an independent group, but that doesn't mean they deserve charity anymore than the millions of people who made free apps/games/supply TL with great/amazing/etc content. Not to mention I can't associate this app or this TL user with anyone who I deem worthy of a donation.
Sorry, but not my cup of tea.
Edit: I may have come off a bit harsh, I meant to be more targeted at "it's just 99c" than to the OP.

0.99 is like nothing! Instabuy! First 2 zerg tips worth it for me, great info Thx for making app! It is a small shortcut for me to improve my gaming,
Ipad version w high res pictures would be nice.

Thanks for your feedback Sprungjeezy. Although I understand where you're coming from, I must make a few points to defend our position.
Yes, there are free resources (Day9, Liquipedia, tip thread, YouTube tutorials) that provide information contained in the tips app. However, the amount of information is very vast and distributed. We'd imagine many users do not have the time or the energy to go through all the material and extract out the useful information. What we provide in SC2 Tips is a compact app that contains the most useful and up to date tips. SC2 Tips offers the user the choice of spending a little money ($0.99) to save a lot of time in obtaining useful game knowledge.
We are not asking for donations. We've honestly spent a great deal of time creating this app, both from the development and data gathering point of view. It takes a lot of time to sort through the vast amount of resources, filter out the good tips, verify the accuracy, and finally take the proper execution screenshot. Of course, it also takes a lot of time to design, develop and test the actual app. We feel that we've created something that has value to our customers.
Would you have had the same reaction if we made the app free?
The natural followup question would be, why didn't we make the app free? Are we talented indie developers who know nothing about Starcraft, and simply create one-shot apps to make a quick profit off the community? Are we going to advertise the app, sell as many copies as possible, and then disappear never to update the app again? Are we trying to get rich off of TL users?
The answer to all of the above questions is no. Although we realize the community would have had a much better reaction if we made the app completely free, we simply cannot afford to do this. We've both turned down attractive job offers from large software companies to work on SC2 related apps full time. We did it because we love Starcraft and want to work on Starcraft related projects as our careers. To do this, we need some community support as we still need to pay rent and living expenses. If our goal was to get rich as developers, would we not target the general audience with a game similar to Angry Birds, Doodle Jump, or Tiny Wings? Why would we greatly limit ourselves by only targeting the Starcraft community?
Starcraft means more to us than just a game and a medium to make profits. We both grew up playing, watching and discussing Starcraft on a daily basis. I have personally been following TeamLiquid since broodwar.com went down. Although I've never been a prominent posting member, I've followed all the stories throughout the years. From the foreigners (eVERLAST, Grrrr, Asmodey, Elky, Smuft, Nazgul, Assem, Draco, Nony, Idra, ret) going to Korea, to the incredible memories left by WCG (Boxer vs DiDi, Blackman, and Android!), to the unforgettable matches between Nazgul vs NTT and Slayers_'Boxer' vs Slayer, to the rise and fall of the Gamei, PGTour and ICCup servers, to the domination by each of the bonjwas, and finally to the current scene with Proleague and S-class player like Flash/Jaedong/Bisu/Stork. Of course, that's only my personal SC1 history. I've followed the SC2 scene with equal fervor, playing and following the game from its beta stages (I'm still sad that roaches cost 2 supplies now) to its current scene with Nestea, MC and MVP being at the top of their respective races. We've both stayed up countless nights watching GSL, and even as I type this reply, my partner is watching Code A qualifiers. In fact, we have watched almost every single GSL match broadcasted by GomTV, even if that meant staying up until 6 am in the morning and having class the next day. I didn't want to make this post personal, but I really wanted to show you that we're both very passionate about the community and Starcraft.
And as for the app, you can be sure that we'll keep it up to date based on the latest patches. We'll add new tips with each update, and will continue to bring you the latest and best tips from the community. We'll also be incorporating in Heart of the Swarm tips into this app once the expansion becomes available at no additional charge. Our goal is to create a single resource for useful SC2 game tips, enhanced by eye pleasing in-game screen shots. We are not here to simply make a quick profit off the community. We want to give back, but we also need community support so we can continue to bring you great SC2 related apps.
We have other great projects in the pipeline, including but not limited to SC2 and Diablo 3.

It's .99 man.. Hell that's worth just having something else thats SC2 related to look at while you are on the bus or at the doctor's office imo, but to each their own.

Because ... actually ... it is nothing more. Thanks for your feedback bluQ. Please read my reply to Sprungjeezy which addresses some of your concerns.
And to address the other points you've brought up, SC2 Tips is a self contained app and does not initiate any server requests and certainly does not send any information out to servers. The app's user experience would suffer greatly if it was implemented using the client/server model you suggested. Swiping back and forth would not be fluid as users would have to wait for images to load after each swipe. It's also inefficient to request for all the images at once or in batches, as this would lead to wasted bandwidth if the images are not used (ex. the user does not view that particular tip containing that image). And even if they are used, you'll still being inefficient by refetching the same images multiple times. These images also cannot sit in memory forever, and will eventually be flushed by the OS when other applications require that memory. When this happens, the data you've fetched will have been wasted. You can always save all images you've fetched to the app's documents directory and read from that location on subsequent image loads. If you do that, why not make the app self contained in the first place and avoid wasting bandwidth and unnecessarily complicating the code? Remote data fetches would also mean the app will appear sluggish during startups and data request periods. In addition, image quality would have to be greatly reduced to save bandwidth. The images contained in SC2 tips is of the highest quality, and totals to almost 50 MB for 80 images. Considering most data plans (in the US) are 250 MB or 2048 MB, you'll quickly burn through the user's quota using your approach, especially when you plan to add new tips/screenshots with future updates. Users will also feel frustrated at having to wait for the high quality image to load from the server. Lower quality images with smaller sizes can be used, but they are not as visually pleasing. And if the user is in an area with no data coverage, then no image will be loaded at all. The implementation model you're suggesting simply does not work well from a user experience point of view.
The application source code also contains far greater than 50 lines of code. The idea of an automatically updating text file and an AI that parses the file, verifies the tips, and creates the corresponding screenshots sounds fantastic, but this technology does not currently exist as far as I'm aware.
And we do have plans to port SC2 Tips to Android. Cannot make promises for other platforms at this point but Android is definitely in the project pipeline.

Good job with the app.
Sorry to bring bad news but that partial tip from Protoss tip #5 is not accurate. Merging Dark Templars become visible. We didn't catch this mistake until we've submitted the app to Apple. We've already fixed the mistake and currently in the proces of adding 20 new tips as an update. We should be submitting the newest version to Apple in the next day or two, and you should be able to grab the update by the end of next week.
Once again, we apologize for the mistake!

I apologize for not responding to your "Edit2", which was not present when I drafted my reply. No, we do not have a license with Blizzard Entertainment.
And we're quite serious in telling you that our app contains more than 200 lines of self written code. We're completely open to competition and hope you can write a great tips app and share it with the community. In fact, we strongly encourage you to do so because we believe competition brings out the best in everyone. Best of luck and we look forward to seeing your results.

You have my personal guarantee that won't happen. We're both "hardcore" Starcraft fans and browse TL on a hourly basis.

I do appreciate the effort and would definitely buy the app, even if just to support you guys in developing more starcraft-related content. I don't have a smartphone (and don't intend to buy one), but I would purchase it through the app store on my mac. Without any idea of porting etc. I would imagine it would be rather easy to make it available on the macbook app store (if it already is, I'm just unable to find it, so I would kindly ask you to point me to a search cue that gets me there). Keep up the dedication!

Best of luck! I wish I had iOS

It's great to see you guys providing so many responses in this thread, you really do seem ambitious, good luck with updates and future apps.

We really appreciate the gesture and the support Black.Tea.
Unfortunately, the porting process from iOS to Mac OS X is not so straightforward and we'll have to design and create a brand new app for the Mac OS X App Store. This is not something that is currently planned but we won't completely rule out this possibility either.
Once again, thank you so much for your support.

Looks like there's a lot of interests in an Android version. We'll be working on getting one released in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

If I buy this app, cause i want tips on how to play terran better, am I able to set it so that i only get Terran race tips? I would be interested in spending .99 cents of my money on this if I knew that my time wasn't going to be wasted with tips on how to play zerg. Does this app only work through a random generator function or does it have archival structure and organization, so I can use it for race strict learning? Please let me know, I am interested!

1hpBuiltForLove, have a look at the screenshot on the first page of this thread. SC2 Tips organizes the tips into General, Terran, Protoss and Zerg tabs. So if you're only interested in the Terran tips, just stay in the Terran tab. You'll also be able to pick up useful tips under the General tab, as it contains information applicable to all 3 races.

I love how people will not hesitate to spend endless hundreds of dollars on iPod/Phone/Pad, but balk at the prospect of spending ninety nine cents on an app.

Our interface is specific to iOS devices and you can find it via screenshots on the first page. You can find all the tips we're using in the actual app.

AznBoy00, updates are always coming. You should have 20 more tips by the middle of next week.
Yes, we are aware of the 1000 tips thread on TL. However, that list is getting so massive that most people do not have the time or the energy to read through and process that list. And worst of all, many of those tips are inaccurate or outdated.
Currently, there are 100 tips contained in the app. That's 100 high quality, accurate tips, along with their execution screenshots for 99 cents. More tips will also be added on a fairly regular basis. We're very open to suggestions on improving SC2 Tips, along with being receptive to user emailed tips.
Please let us know what else we can do to add value to SC2 Tips so that it is worthy of its $0.99 price tag.

More content will be coming.
Keep in mind that it does take a lot of time find the best tips, verify them for accuracy, and finally take proper execution screenshots. Our goal with SC2 Tips is not about quantity, but quality. We want to provide practical and fun tips that you can actually use in competitive games.
We're currently working very hard to generate more tips for the app, as well as creating an Android version for our Android fans.
And it doesn't matter what league you're in, everyone has tips when it comes to playing SC2. Don't be shy and send whatever useful/cool tips you have to us. We'll pick the best ones and include them in the app as future updates.

We should just have these tips on the loading screen rather than the ones currently there. EDIT: about the app, it looks pretty cool! Even though I probably know what's already gonna be there, I'll Download it and recommend my friends if I like it :D

When I first started programming I was a cocky little bastard and thought that simple apps are simple to make. Having never worked on anything past the prototype stage it was easy to think that way. Now I know that even simple apps require a ton of time and effort to complete. Obviously there's a lot more focus on content for your Tips app, but it's still very time consuming.
Kudos to you for keeping your cool and responding in a constructive manner. I had a good chuckle to myself after reading his estimate of 200 lines of code -- as if the # of lines makes an app worthwhile to buy!
