As a tone-deaf person, the idea of tonal languages scares the shit out of me.

I'm sorry. The verbs come and cook are also "Ma".

I dunno. They pick up on tiny vocal inflections instantly, maybe you can see the differences too.

I want to take a video of this for you guys. 5 Thai teachers and I are drunk and just staring at each other saying "Ma" over and over.
They say I have 3 of the 5 tones down but the last two apparently require more grinding.

Just finished Liliana's second match. Took me about one hour and a half. + Show Spoiler +I assume you're supposed to cast the sorceries to kill the 4/4 Trample which gets 4 counters if something died this turn when it comes into play [not English names zzz], then reanimate it from the dude's graveyard so you get a 8/8 Trample and go from there. It's pretty absurd though (and I think I realised it's not so much that they designed the matches badly, rather than with their goals, you can't design good matches) and it doesn't work if you don't get the play early enough either because if he draws the creature late his board will be strong enough to eat it.
So instead I used a Vengeful Dead (I assume? Every time it or another zombie dies, opponents eat 1 damage) and both Undertakers, sacrificing one with Nantuko Husk for 1 damage, then playing the other to bring it back in my hand, rinse and repeat as mana permits. I finished him off by eating my whole board with Nantuko Husk once I reached a threshold. That was kinda tedious (turn 20 or something, considering I could have started 3-4 earlier had I realised?). At some point I could have milled him too, but then I played my draw card so nope.

general way to go with lilianas shit is reset until you have a good starting hand -> bash his face in
actually that's most story missions but liliana is the worst lel

That's what I noticed, though: every mission seems to try and teach you a certain mechanic/approach to the game (this one was interaction with the graveyard), but if they want to railroad you there are several implications: - it has to be your main win condition, so you have to weaken other ways to avoid people winning while skipping the featured mechanic. - board control is the simplest win condition, and if the decks are designed so yours can't win that way you're going to be much weaker in general. - you could instead trump the draws (apparently the case in Gideon's story?), but that'd alienate experimented players, remove replay value, and make the mission a tutorial rather than a real solo mode. - so you end up with overall weaker decks (the further your win condition is from board control, the bigger gap between the decks in that regard), on top of that relying on specific cards (and I assume some missions are gonna involve 5+ CC cards requiring you to survive through early game too), creating very RNG-reliant matches.
That's why I said "I don't think they design the matches badly, it's just their approach not allowing well-designed matches". And although I won mission 1 through board control and face damage, that was basically "combine removal with reanimators to remove his better creatures non-efficiently then bring yours back onto the board anyway while he's out of juice". Having a choice between 1/1 or creatures entering the field tapped isn't great for "good starting hand -> bash his head in".
I don't mind the puzzle aspect (although not being able to see what's in your deck beforehand is cheating a bit) but it's so RNG-reliant the replay value ends up being low regardless, for the missions I've done so far. Too bad.
Edit: in that regard Hearthstone's adventure are much better as a solo mode, but that's because they don't try to teach you anything, there's just a gimmick which can be overcome in one or several ways, and it's up to you to figure it out (although the difficulty varies a lot depending in your collection, obv.). There's also heroic mode which allows them to split the mode between a fair match ('cause you're also in it for the rewards after all) and another for those who want to feel challenged. Then again, HS has its own tutorial anyway, and some of its adventures' matches are also pretty unfair/badly done (Nefarian's boss fights).

in jace's shit they'll railroad you pretty hard into milling your opponent
yes the singleplayer is something HS for example did better, mtg being behind the curve compared to other childrens card games, what else is new
gideon is supposed to be the tutorial i think
also dont taze the 1/1 it's great .... well compared to the other shit they give you at least

Honestly, I feel like once you know the basic rules, maybe it'd be less frustrating if we got an xmage/Cockatrice playgroup together rather than slogging through this shit.

Yeah in Sesotho, the words for news and mountains are spelled the same, it's obnoxious.
The word for baby and vagina are dangerously close as well which lead to some interesting conversations during training.

The xmage draft tournament function is pretty slick. The whole thing is self-contained, just need to get everyone on TS and in the game lobby and good to go. The problem is I rarely have a few hour block so I never ask and I do have the time I usually don't know enough in advance

i can't draft for shit, so im too scared of being exposed as the fraud i am

I'm putting a few hours into it quickly, but as usual I'll just come back to it every once in awhile and spam for a day or two before leaving it again. Or maybe I'll do quests while bored.

Sealed is honestly probably a little more accessible to newcomers, and realistically we could block out matches over the course of several days rather than trying to do the whole thing in one sitting.
