Step-brother got addicted to Oxycontin and that's lead to a whole slew of problems. He's a really nice guy, but he's a victim of misfortune.
Here's hoping that things picks up for everyone sooner rather than later.

Numy, it all depends on what kind of MTG you want to play. Generally if you're looking to build a deck and play that at FNM, it's cheaper to buy the singles for the deck you need than attempt to buy packs and hope to open what you want. If you like to gamble, then by all means crack some packs! Personally I like playing limited (drafting), so it's almost like the best of both worlds.

It's also the better way to start building a collection, unless your friends are really casual players and just play casual formats/free play. It allows you to learn the competitive game in a controlled environment without being overwhelmed by the size of the card pool in a particular format (well, unless you're playing standard/block constructed, but those formats suck anyway ).It has a higher game knowledge barrier to entry (before you start doing well), but also has a lower monetary barrier of entry.

I think Block constructed is only an old wives' tale. I've never heard anyone talk about it nor seen any event. And there's nothing wrong with Standard so long as you understand the rotation issue and what that means for your bank account.

If he's real lucky, Rochester Draft is still alive! I think that's what makes it an awful format for a player who's just learning the game though. Rotation will hit you just as you're starting to really learn how the game works and made that investment to make a deck you feel confident in.

Well at the very least if you were thinking about playing Standard Numy, don't play until October.

Of course now I'd be winded in about 15 minutes if I tried to play anything at a competitive speed.
