It's also jarring because this kind of thing is something Marvel has been traditionally very good at. People were impressed with how well Luke Cage portrayed Harlem, and with how well Jessica Jones portrayed what it's like to have PTSD.
So it's just weird. I'm probably gonna keep watching it because I'm invested in Marvel shit at this point, but like, ugh. It's the first thing Marvel has done that I've really been like "wow this is just bad."
People lost their shit because a white woman was cast as Ancient One, despite typically being a Tibetan man. Though it is possible that the outrage wasn't as bad because a) she's a woman and b) Tibetan characters don't do well in China, the biggest non-domestic theater market.
Dr. Strange's story is about how a scientific culture built Strange up to be a toolbag and opening himself up to spirituality and mysticism made him literally and figuratively whole.
What I mean though is that it's similar, but Dr. Strange does it better. There's depicted reasons for Strange to be an asshole, the movie pokes fun at the stereotypes it's representing (like the wifi password joke), and you experience him changing.
Danny Rand came from a similar situation, that of stuck up luxury, and you'd think after 15 years in a monastery he wouldn't be such a dick. But in the show he's still kind of a dick, and also randomly throws out weird innacurate lines about karma or whatever that he himself doesn't seem to really follow or appreciate. It's just not done well.
I think it could have been done well, and if it had been done well, the casting choice may not have gotten as much attention. I don't think it's the actors fault, I think it's an issue with the writing / directing / editing.

I don't have much to say on the execution in IF, since I haven't watched it.

It's like how almost 99% of time my country is involved in a movie or tv series it's extremely poorly done.

You didn't like district 9?
You mean "Metaphor For Apartheid: The Movie"?
I thought the aliens looked cool. I want to transform in a traumatizing and bloody fashion into an alien like that for no discernible scientific reason whatsoever, seems like fun.

Haven't seen it but it most likely would fall into the 1%. Typically what happens is any white guy from SA in a movie sounds like the most stereotypical afrikaans man which is kind of a racist gag here. Makes it hard to take it seriously. They also completely ignore the large indian and asian population. It's like there's only 2 kinds of people, black or Afrikaans white guys. The white guys are always diamond smugglers or some form of smugglers too...

I'm actually super jelly that you're doing high school me's dream job. I always look forward to your updates <3
I've painted more models in the last month than I think I have in the previous year. Dear Lord preserve my back and hands. Pics when finally done.
Also been watching Crufts dog show. SO MANY CUTE DOGGOS RUNNING AROUND AAAAAAAAAA
Music Monday. My parents were cleaning out their basement, found a bunch of records, and we all discovered my wife's deep abiding love for 80s music that I had no idea about.
My skype account is linked to my old college email that I can't get to anymore, so recovery is a hassle. The form that they gave me didn't work so I'm just kinda sol for the time being.
Yesterday I literally spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to get the thing to play a simple playlist on shuffle mode. I tried like 3 different things that I used to do, but between some changes I couldn't figure out and the up next "feature" it kept screwing it up and refused to play anything shuffled. Ended up playing music with VLC from my bloody phone while I was at my computer. The thing has just become increasingly obtuse and less plug and play over the years and I think it's finally broken me and I'm going to switch to something else. I used to use it a lot for easy syncing with my ipod but I don't really need to do that anymore since I finally entered the smartphone age last year.
