My company does a fairly good job at stressing work-life balance, but I know it's not something I'll find in a lot of places. Your "fairly good ... work-life balance" would probably be viewed as barbaric by most Europeans in comparison ![]() The baseline time off per year in a US company is somewhere in the neighborhood of 2-3 weeks. For comparison, many European companies have 4+ weeks, often more to be competitive in benefits offerings. France, Germany, Spain, and a few others have somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 weeks. But they don't have FREEDOM so it's OK.

Yeah, I've got 3 weeks vacation and 10 sick days, which is on the higher side of things (at least from what I've heard) for America. I know most of Europe looks at how much we work and thinks it's barbaric.

The trade-off is that you can go into vacation debt and earn it back eventually. This YEAR the company decided to grant a WEEK of paternity leave.

LOL edit: since I start at the company in August, and I only use a few vacation days and a sick day in that time, I'm fairly certain a % of what I didn't use rolls over, which is awesome. If not vacation days, I know some number of sick days rolls over.

Supposedly Obama is going to give a speech about that today. This should be good. On January 17 2014 23:27 Scip wrote: The funny thing is how bad America is at freedom. But I work 24/7/365. That might have something to do with it. If my shift falls on a holiday I have to work it.

![]() I've got something like 4 weeks + 5 TOIL/compensatory time on my behalf + 5 on my boss' behalf (which mens that he'll always say "0K" unless I try to use it at a time where I'm really really needed, like last day of crunch time on a huge and lengthy project). Most of it's floating over the next year. You should look at the number of hours, too. I prob work the same as you though, 36.5 hours a week on paper, with unpaid overtime when the work needs to be finished.

^ 40 hours is bare minimum - I often don't work too much more than that, but same deal, if shit needs to get done, I stay
