Also for falco the first things you want to learn are probably short hop laser (and reverse neutral b) and shine cancel.

If people aren't teching, learn how to NOW. That will definitely give you a good edge. Wavedashing is definitely something to learn, but it's fairly tough to learn with Falco, and unless you're really using it to completely out-tempo your opponents, it gives you minimal benefit.
With Falco, learn shine combos and, as mentioned before, short hop lazers.
I played Peach and Marth, so I can't help too much with Falco. Only space animal I was halfway mediocre with in SSBM was Fox because of shine spikes. Now I play Wolf in Project M.

They key to falco against low level players is as mentioned Short hop laser. Just spam short hop laser while approaching and then do a Neutral Air (or for hard mode down air). Since as falco you might have issues finishing people off if your edge game sucks (which is probably does) feel free to use Forward smash or down tilt. These are the least mechanically demanding skills. Another really good thing against bad people is to spot dodge shine, shine cancel aerial.
With Falco, wavedashing is difficult as well as short hop down air l cancel but you can get it if you try!
Matchup specific: Against fox, it is really hard to do aerial combos because of his weight. It can be difficult to shine/sh down air combo against fox. Against a really bad fox, you can downthrow, grab downthrow spam (infinite combo against baddies).
Against pikachu, you rape. Lasers, forward smashes, dair combos, all the shabang ez pz. Just don't get kicked off the stage as recovery can be brutal against good pikachus!

It's even more terrifying in Project M. Although her turnips feel slightly clunkier.
If you guys like(d) SSBM, and you have a Wii + Brawl, you should check Project M out.

I just wish I was better haha. My friends get pretty competitive but we are all kinda casual scrubs, don't wavedash very often hahahaha.

I think project M is garbage. It looks cool and all but isn't as good as melee.

I used to be fairly competitive - my friend was ranked like 4th in CT at some point (played with gizbro on at least one occasion). I'm just so out of practice. L-canceling isn't too rough, but wave dashing hasn't been very good lately (lately as in "within the last year" lol)

For what reason?

Sure, but it's better than Brawl and I like Brawl's roster so I get the best of both worlds.

Characters feel heavier, falco feels/chains different and final destination sucks.
edit: For falco, I feel like DAir into L cancel is super off, especially into the shield. Shields heavy. Game too heavy.

I agree that Falco feels bad, but I have very few complaints about most other characters.
Actually, I'm not even complaining about Falco - I hate him.

but, but, Happy feet!
Falco is the only character I tried learning his full kit in melee and I was super disapointed in Project M. I haven't learned the intricacies of the other chars and so I can't comment about the transition. At least Project M is better than SC2 BW which is super complete garbage. Project M is at least fun as a standalone game (but then again, brawl is also pretty fun).

You have to keep in mind, Project M is just a brawl mod made by people who aren't getting paid to do it (outside potential donations).
Brawl was not very fun imo. Everything is so floaty, there are so many dumb mechanics, final smashes got old quickly. I'm not sure who suggested introducing random tripping, but whoever it was should probably be fired.
I loved the Brawl line-up though, and that's what draws me to Project M. It's *mostly* the feel of Melee, but with some fresh faces.
I just wish ZSS didn't suck so much in Project M =(

Yea, Project M did a good job improving brawl but in the end it does not matchup to melee. That is all

What's bad about sc2 BW? Never played it (or sc2 for that matter)

that's honestly the most substantive complaint
