My dad bought me an MS-DOS reference book which I used to figure out how to make bootdisks to run PC games by learning about how to edit autoexec.bat and config.sys. The end.

Don't expect much battery life with it, and the heating is probably a bitch (may get an anti-heat fan for it), but teh valuez. Might even up it to this for slightly worse gfx and a larger screen for only $40, but not werth I think, as the resolution's the same. I am concerned about Lenovos' shoddy tech support, though. Better than HPs, but that's not saying much. When I was looking for a laptop, nothing came close the the quality/$ of Asus.

I probably didn't learn to do it without any hand holding for a year or two, but I was definitely starting the process really young, and I know we're around the same age.

I knew how to run the games no problem but editing the files was a different story I think. I dunno maybe because my dad made all the discs/menus super user friendly so all we had to do was type like '5' to select from a list of games and then select the game and/or put in the appropriate disc? (He was also REALLY protective of his computer so I doubt he wanted us messing with much.)

I remember playing a ton of DOS games well into '96/'97. It took a while for (good) games to become native Windows 95 games. Either way, there were some games that were really finicky when it came to memory management like Ultima 7, so I somehow taught myself to understand boot disks to play these games. FWIW I still don't understand exactly what I was doing (damned if I know the difference between conventional, extended, and expanded memory), I just knew that I could get the games to run.

A lot of effort was put into helping me so that every time I wanted to play I didn't go harass said brothers, which probably helped. Never underestimate the power of annoyance.

Just merely starting DOS took 10 minutes, starting the actual windows took about 20 more minutes. (It was an old PC even back then) So we always stayed in DOS and played pre2 only baby. For hours. Shit was real ghetto.

this chick I had a crush on would join me now and again. but she dated this dude who hit puberty at a stupid early age. le sigh. edit: grading papers and I get this gem - A boy gets 7 out of 10 on the first test. He gets a 11 out of 15 on the second test. Which test did the boy do better on? "He performed well on both tests." you get full marks from me for that sort of positive thinking. (keep in mind no one in either 9th grade class got above a 70 on the final)

I would love to get an ASUS (everyone I know with one loves it, and non-Lenovo/HP shitty support), but the issue is that there just isn't one in the same price range (700-850) with even remotely comparable stats. I could probably bump up for a 1000-1200, but that's abit more than I'm willing to pay, and its' not like I play Crysis or anything ridic like that. My games/stats workload tend to weigh more heavily on the processors (PI Games for instance). As a note, how useful would having a few gigs of an SSD attached to the computer be? I understand the boost of having a pure SSD over HDD, but not sure if simply having like 8-24gbs of SSD is a significant enough performance boost to justify spending more. I'm a cheapskate, don't judge meeeee <_<

(keep in mind no one in either 9th grade class got above a 70 on the final) For my AP environmental class we had one test talking about clear cutting is also called "no tree left behind." So after I finished the test i doodled on the back a drawing of george bush vs al gore with the captions: "No tree left behind" above gore and "no child left behind" above bush, then wrong "coincidence? I think not." My teacher gave me 5 extra points on that test so i ended up with a 105 lol. That class was so awesome. We went kyacking for a field trip and i had like a 97 average in the class by the end.
