In high school, my parents were always on my ass about how much I was playing games (mostly WoW). But come college time, and after I got really into LoL, they started being more supportive. It was really after I hit plat and I was talking to my dad about the game and that I was technically in the top 1% of the NA ranked, he was like "oh shit". It's an essentially meaningless stat in reality, but I think it was the moment my dad realized I wasn't completely wasting my time, per se. Since then, they've been pretty supportive of my goals of potentially working in the gaming industry in the future. He was also really interested when I started getting into casting, and still asks about it every once in a while.

It was always a fight in high school even. My personal space was never mine. Randomly going through my things looking for reasons to chastise me for being anti social, and then when I go to be social it wasn't the right type of social. Too many "wrong connections." It sounds spiteful, but those wrong connections got me a better paying job than they both have combined so I'm not too worried. I just wish my family wasn't so petty ![]()

Yeah, I think that was part of it too. Like, in college, I had good grades, I was competing on the gymnastics team, I clearly had my shit together somewhat, so it didn't matter too much. Final semester senior year was funny cuz my grades tanked hard core. I got my job offer for post-graduation, and completely gave up on school, and it was horribly apparent in my marks. My dad was pretty annoyed for a while, but he couldn't argue the fact that I was getting hired out of school.

The closest my dad ever came to playing games with me was when i was a little kid he'd play battleship with me. Other than that he always looked down on everything I did and everything I liked. Even building a computer now, I'm trying to explain to him the money I'm spending on this comp is half the price he would spend to buy it from a company and it has twice the everything. And it should last for like 10 years. Doesn't care because apparently I'm wasting my money because I "don't need a computer." (I take online classes....?) When it comes to games, computers, and the internet in general my dad literally makes 0 sense. He still types with only 2 fingers even though he has been exposed to computers and typing for like 30 years. >_>

Get back on tracks! On November 27 2013 00:21 BlackPaladin wrote: My dad believes Fox news that the "internet is an addiction" (because apparently reading books, watching tv, and playing games like EVERYONE does in some sense is "bad"...but only when the internet is involved!) and that games apparently cause violence and cancer and eat babies or some shit. My mom's kinda the same. When I was younger they didn't think much of me spending most of my time (including past bedtime with the torchlight under the sheets :') ) reading, but even when I tried to tell her that my use of a pc is closer to a "hub" (listening to music [on the radio], watching shows [on TV], playing games [on console], reading [books/newspaper] plus the keeping in touch part) all that stuck to her was "you're on the computer". It's part of what strained our relatiosnship because we're both pretty stubborn and quick to judge, her putting even less effort than me into combating that, and with each conversation that inevitably drifted to that topic my impression that it was time wasted grew, until I favored not talking to her over wasting 90 minutes in disputes, listening to the same rehashed sentences for the nth time. Not that I'm blameless, I certainly spend too much time on my pc and I don't devote much time to the family (that's me, though, not the pc cutting me off). I guess I just wished at the time that she realised I wouldn't like my self-righteous aunt any more if I watched Cowboy Bebop on the TV rather than the PC; or that feeling uncomfortable over not having my pc for a week when I moved was that the lack of music or ability to contact several friends made me feel more isolated, not me being addicted to "the pc".

That said, he's still doing his best to be understanding, and has taken a lot of his time to talk to me and have me explain things. When I went to S2 Worlds (which I payed for) he asked to tag along so he could learn more about what I spent so much of my time with. I don't take for granted that he's working hard to get past his bias ![]()
