For me it's a mystery why people think trash talking is fun. Well, I think I know where they're coming from, but I get no joy in intentionally hurting people's feelings.

Coming from a sports background it's easy to see why trash talking happens/is fun/etc, however like basically everything on the internet, there is a subset of people that take it too far to the point that I don't think it would pass as 'trash talking' anymore. As mentioned though, the position of the line will be subject to extreme individual preference.
Also, far be it for me to say nobody clowns on their own teammate in 'real' sports, but that rate at which it happens in online gaming is absurd, and is typically where most of the complaining comes from. That doesn't really fall under the umbrella of trash talking.

There's trash talk, and then there's flaming.
Real trash talk is an art. Most of what's seen in online gaming is just mindless flaming.

I mean I don't try to pass myself off as being mostly Chinese I just say that I'm of Chinese descent. are people giving you grief about this though? If you're a quarter chinese you're of chinese descent the math checks out Yeah, but how much can you really claim Chinese descent if you don't have any inkling of Chinese culture?
well I don't really have a lot of Chinese culture if any (probably because my grandfather passed away before I was born) and no one is giving me grief about it or anything I was just kind of curious what people thought about it. I'm interested a little bit into learning about it and maybe incorporating some cultural things which is why I've been thinking about it.
in regards to trash talking I mean I kind of get it cause I used to do it a little bit in high school but to be fair I was an idiot in high school who bought a Halo 3 account at one point and did lots of incredibly stupid things (to a certain extent, not like drugs or anything just dumb dumb stuff.)

I don't hate it. I just found it focused entirely on the main character who I found uninsteresting and so much stuff happened the other characters got kind of ignored. So i was kind of bored with it.
I mean It was good I guess but I have no desire to see it again.

Generally I avoid these types of discussion on TL (and will do so in this case as well) because it's a pretty awful community for them (better than some others obvs). I do a lot of mixed race community organizing and activism/advocacy work and this is an open invitation for you to PM me if you're interested in learning about it from a critical race studies perspective.

I have no idea where Wei plays basketball, but I've played basketball for over a decade now and have never heard any trash talk beyond a sarcastic "nice shot." Sounds awful to have to bear with league of legends solo q chat in real life too.

Well when you're trash talking you don't want to crush your interlocutor's soul, you're mostly being cheeky (more or less explicitly) in my opinion. See in this thread, I don't think people are trying to hurt each other when jabs fly around. ... most of the time.

90% of the things people flame each other with online are things you would't say to people in real life not because they're offensive, but because they sound stupid as fuck when you say them to people in person.

Then how do people conflate pure flaming that comes out online with in-person trash talk?
The entire idea of "its ok in person so its ok online" makes no fucking sense when online "trash talk" is just way shittier.
Like I said, there's trash talk, and then there's just plain flaming.
