This is the Off Topic thread, right. The entire point of this thread is for people to do stupid shit. Because it's hard to be super serious on a forum all the time when you're talking with your friends and sometimes you just really want to shitpost, so this way you can shitpost in this thread and not fuck up the other threads, right? It's a pretty normal thing, most big forums have one (or several) threads like this. It makes sense to me that you would ban pointless memes or running jokes or things of that sort in other threads, because the point of the other threads is to have actual discussion about the actual source material that the forum is about. That's not the point of this thread. The point of this thread is to be an idiot. So, it comes off as a little pretentious and sketchy when the mods start to say "this form of idiocy is okay, this form of idiocy is not." Everybody is going to have jokes that they don't want to read. I don't like to read discussions about Pokemon because I find Pokemon boring. Some people aren't going to like this Jinx icon, but other people are. When you start to ban specific types of shitposting under the standpoint that it's not funny, or that it's repeated too much, or that sort of thing, all you're going to do is alienate the users that were enjoying it, because they won't see a legitimate reason behind what you're doing. All they're going to see is that this is the thread where you do stupid shit, I did stupid shit, but the mods decided that my stupid shit wasn't okay and other peoples stupid shit was okay. I think if you just didn't care, people would use the Jinx face for a while, it might be super popular for a few days, and then it'll die down, because since this is a thread for shitposting, the attention span of shitposting is typically fairly limited. If you ban it, you might "improve" the "quality" of the thread by your own standards, but in the long run the thread will stay just about the same, and you'll have a few posters that you've alienated who will hold it against you for a really long time. The other big problem with it is because, since you are banning something because it's used too much or because it's not funny, these are guidelines that are extremely nebulous and hard to pin down or get agreement and consensus on. Once you ban one thing in this way, you're gonna find yourself in a position with the next offending meme where, as Cheep said, if you ban it you're a nazi, but if you don't ban it you're a hypocrite. | ||

I wholly agree with this and that's why it annoys me to no end when things happen like someone gets warned for "game bashing" or "posting something with no evidence" (wtf) when it's literally an off topic thread to post shit about other things off the top of your head. It's wholly enjoyable and doesn't harm anyone and I find it ridiculous that this thread gets moderated to this extent when it's an off topic thread wholly designed to post random shit. | ||

The purpose of this thread is to have reasonable discussions just like anywhere else on TL/LL, but about topics that happen to be irrelevant to any other particular subsection of the site and don't really deserve their own thread. It's not supposed to be "excusable shitposting" and I'm pretty sure that was never Moonbear's goal when he made the thread. That moderation is lighter here is a privilege to veteran posters who post in this thread, it's not core to the function of the thread, nor is it mandated in any way. | ||
