When I first heard it, I thought it might of been good/decent writing with really raunchy elements to it, since TONS of women in their 30's/40's were buying it up. Then again, these same women may of read and loved Twilight too.

You find many people don't know what good/decent literature is and just buy anything hyped up. It's like any product, people buying it means nothing about the quality of it.

Neither do I apparently. I remember getting into a mini-fight with my then ex when she compared her reading Twilight to me reading ASoFI series.
While on the topic anyone got any good book recommendations (don't care of genre)?

Dodged a bullet there. Have you read Steven Erikson? I'd say Glen Cook too but chances are you read both

While on the topic anyone got any good book recommendations (don't care of genre)? well she's not wrong, Martin has always been more of an ideas and plot guy than actually particularly good at the literary element of writing. the twilight novels are a similar way, as is Ayn Rand.

I'm not one to necessarily disagree, but really, GRRM's writing is way better than Meyer's even IF you think ASOIAF is slightly lacking in that department. Have you read any of Twilight at all?

Martin's not exactly a bastion of good writing but he still does a decent job at it while building his world. Meyer doesn't even achieve this while creating a terribly bland world. Also I don't really see how you can compare either of them to Ayn Rand. She's all about pushing her agenda and being more philosophical in nature. Not really about writing a story.

I guess they both address one group of people feeding off another right

Both Twilight and ASOIAF being poorly written doesn't mean that they are EQUALLY poorly written.
And if you're arguing that they ARE equally poorly written, then you're going to have to do more than just state it as fact.

My wife is seeing that today, we'll see what she thinks---despite enjoying the trash that the book represents she knows and just looks past how poorly written it is so I expect a fair review. She laughed her way through Kingsmen last night apparently. PX sure I can do a little of that, maybe an Isaac run or two, but mainly I also want to do a draft. Sucks too because I have work tomorrow even though it's a holiday, otherwise I'd stay up rl late.
It follows in the same "average girl attracts devilishly handsome man who'd otherwise be far from her reach" setup as Twilight (I need help here, didn't actually watch/read them) with a BDSM theme to it. It's nothing more than softcore porn with bad acting aka softcore porn.
Maybe it's not the actors' and actresses' faults and the writing department is to blame. Away from the sex scenes, the movie is mashed potatoes on white bread mixed with vanilla pudding on rice cakes.

It depends on where you decide what their target was. Martin attempted to create an opposing work of fantasy to that of Tolkien, while Twilight was aimed at teens, one fell far short of the mark in terms of quality of writing, the other hit it around the bottom-middle of the average.
EDIT: all i'm trying to say is that the comparison of someone enjoying twilight despite its poor writing Isn't really different from liking ASOIAF despite it's poor writing. it doesn't matter if ASOIAF is 5% better or 10% better. they both aren't well written. period. the difference is theme, target audience, and style of the authors, and all of those things come down purely to taste anyway.
