sure there are more high flown literature and movies that are supposed to make you think a lore more than feel but they tend to be less popular

also you'll notice neo fights in a more sophisticated wavy style while agent smith expresses power and single mindedness in that he just grabs arms and punches straight, its supposed to emphasize his lack of creativity as a computer program

first off its a sport and peopel like sports even if they aren't practical
secondly its much more useful than weapon training since chances of having a useful weapon and being assualted at the same time are almost nothing, and you don't need much training to be able to effectively enough use a knife or gun or to smack someone with a chair or bottle LOL
