Mahouka would work if the author didn't set up all the rules then write an MC that breaks all of them.

He basically intentionally makes his own setting less believable by doing this. But the setting taken without the MC is kind of workable.

But you don't understand Yango.

He's just so perfect at everything, that's why he failed his highschool entrance exam!

I'll tell you the main problem with Mahouka

ASCII Media Works has published 14 novels under their Dengeki Bunko imprint since July 2011.

Most of those novels are regular book size. I don't see how you can expect to have a full thought out and well written story with such a crazy fast release. It took Erikson 12 years to finish Malazan series and that's with having come up with the universe and story way before hand. Sorry it took him years to get a first publisher for his first book so more likely 20+ years.

Problem is he tries to make it applicable to real physics instead just creating another layer of rules to the universe so it lands up feeling bullshitty. I'm fine with redefining the rules of your universe and then creating technobabble around those rules but when you try do both it just feels bad.

the point of scifi is that you are supposed to design your world to push the limits of our current understanding, so that everything is plausible. which is why much scifi nowadays is more about space and nanotech/AI and subatomic physics. whereas scifi at the turn of the century was about enormous cities and cloning and robots.

I don't think that's the point of all sci-fi, that can be the point of some sci-fi but as a genre it doesn't have to be. A lot of sci-fi at the turn of century was more about philosophy, politics and other potentially controversial topics. They used sci-fi as a medium to go about these topics. These days a lot of sci-fi is far more actiony/casual in nature. Sure there were still aspects about it pushing our current understanding of the world but I don't think that was always a focus.

I think Mahouka would actually far more under sci-fi/fantasy than pure sci-fi. It how our current world works as a basis to create a magic system. So while it's not pure fantasy it's also not pure sci-fi which is partly why I feel the system fails a bit.

Korra isn't as good, but it's still fun to watch.

If they made Korra less of a moron it would be so much more enjoyable.

I'm not talking about the point of writing, but rather the point of the science-fiction element of the stories. a writer has a responsibility not to baffle or to take a reader out of the world by some obvious falsehood.

if you spend your time talking about how gravity is actually wrong and its ancient robots that pull everything to the earth, its a little jarring and can take a reader out of the story and start questioning the world without being interested in a message. On the other hand, if you spend your time detailing a very complex system above your readers heads, they feel dumb and will begin to reject the story because it challenged them with something they couldn't understand due to education,

the point of science fiction element of a story is to create a world that you can feel comfortable in as a reader, while also be unsure of what is possible. thats what i was talking about. the "science" of the stories tend to exist at the limit of our understanding as a race, so that they can be plausible without being confusing or requiring background knowledge, as well as not directly contradicting common knowledge to the point of rejection.

thats why stories like The Iron heel, written prior to 1908, talk about the rise of communism and reaction of capitalists and future world wars, with most of the science and technology being created on the backs of worker-slaves.

This. I'll buy anything that's cheap if I know people who play. Sometimes it doesn't have to be cheap.

It seems pretty fun but no longer $5. You'll have to wait for the next sale.

@Prince - I see what you mean and I agree with you. In that regard Mahouka does pretty well setting up a setting that's both believable to the reader and has sense of unknown possibilities. It just takes that reader out of that setting by having terrible characters that essentially break it.

I just want to throw this out there:
The Malazan world was originally created by Steven Erikson and Ian Cameron Esslemont in 1982 as a backdrop for role-playing games using a modified version of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons

All you DnD players out there could become world famous authors. Never give up!

Yeah it's definitely not on sale anymore
You guys should definitely still get it though....now I wish we had played/showcased/streamed the night before because people would be more interested yesterday while the sale was still on. (Also I got my refund from paypal yay)

I would totally recommend still getting it though. Soniv and I had shit tons of fun just playing a single matchup for almost 3 hours. I don't even think anyone would have to be worried about being too shit at the game either since we'd all be learning at the same time!

Come on do it boys

Upon buying a XBox controller and playing 3 hours of KoF XIII with it I found myself being much more successful with the keyboard (then again I was managing to jump while attempting bottom-half-circle inputs with the controller...).

I definitely noticed myself not knowing exactly where quarter circles began/ended because GC stick housing has an octagon shape as opposed to the xbox's smooth circle housing, but I was getting used to it by the end of the night

I'm using the d-pad on the controller personally. Find the stick to be a little awkward, plus I can just rely on SNES street fighter 2 turbo muscle memory that way.

The stick made me jump yeah, can't remember if I managed to do it with the d-pad too. Obviously I'm more reactive in general with the pad, however the directional input is much easier to control for quarter-circles and such (half-circles are still hell, and screw charged moves).

keyboard halfcircles are super easy though. you should try it, the motions are pretty fluid, using your right finger and middle finger most of the time and rolling your hand.
