The characters were pretty weak but Miyuki Sawashiro was voicing Sinon so I could look past that. The action was just dumb. I dunno even ALO/SAO had smarter action sequences than GGO imo. The main antagonist was just as bad as the ALO guy. Then the plot armour at the end was soooo bad it was even worse than previous plot armour. There were those big patches of nothing really happening on screen aside from sinon ass shots too.

But the characters suck (particularly the primary characters--some of the secondary characters are potentially interesting but not well developed). technobabble approach to magic? like Lost odyssey? or more like Last Remnant?

Ah that makes sense to me. I also hate Asuna's guts. Well I think calling her Asuna is wrong as Asuna died in the first arc. What we have now is either an imaginary friend kirito has sex with or a robot created to please kirito. Basically the magic largely adheres to real world physics but uses inter-dimensional energy through some string theory BS to alter reality. Then you have the MC who throws this all out of the window and does whatever the hell he wants. I think with some work it can be made into a pretty cool setting but it's pretty obvious the author required far more time and editing to get to that point. Feels like most LN suffer from the same thing.

I mean, Kirito is perfect and does everything right to a bullshit degree. But main character guy in Irregular is WAY worse. They'll spend 15 minutes being like "But magic to make people fly is impossible! The UK's top scientists studied it for 20 years and were unable to make any headway at all!" And the main character in the same episode who is a highschool student will then be like "I designed magic that makes people fly during lunch hour while my sister gave me a blowjob, it was easy!"

It was pretty good. I can see why people are crazy superfans over it, though it was a bit kiddy for me in some places, especially the filler episodes. The end was really interesting to me, when + Show Spoiler + they finally stopped beating around the bush and were like "hey this is a kid's show but now we have to deal with things like characters dying and Aang having to kill the Firelord to end the war". Obviously they just gave him a not-death way to do it, but it was an interesting idea and topic for a Nick show to talk about. Dunno if that's really spoilers, didn't Season 3 of that end like 7 years ago or something? Either way, it had pretty clever writing, decent characters (if some a bit shallow), and good dialogue in enough places that I had fun tearing through it. Maybe I'll watch Korra too.

Korra is pretty good, but had some serious issues, mostly in Season 2. Don't let that discourage you if you get to it, because Season 3 is great and Season 4 is shaping up well. I also will heartily recommend the Avatar graphic novels. They're great and keep the voice of the show incredibly well.

I don't think that's the point of all sci-fi, that can be the point of some sci-fi but as a genre it doesn't have to be. A lot of sci-fi at the turn of century was more about philosophy, politics and other potentially controversial topics. They used sci-fi as a medium to go about these topics. These days a lot of sci-fi is far more actiony/casual in nature. Sure there were still aspects about it pushing our current understanding of the world but I don't think that was always a focus. I think Mahouka would actually far more under sci-fi/fantasy than pure sci-fi. It how our current world works as a basis to create a magic system. So while it's not pure fantasy it's also not pure sci-fi which is partly why I feel the system fails a bit. On November 20 2014 01:54 Ketara wrote: Korra isn't as good, but it's still fun to watch. My big problem with Korra is that, while Avatar had an overarching story that linked it through the seperate "books", the different seasons of Korra have little to nothing to do with each other. I enjoyed the first season and wouldn't have minded it just as a lead in, and when they started the spirit stuff in S2 I was like okay, this is cool, the entire rest of the show will be about the spirit world right? NOPE, DIDNT HAPPEN
