Damn. I can't believe how many people misunderstood/jumped down tuet's throat. Wish I coulda been there to help out.
You know what would really fix 3rd world countries? fucking roads. for one whole year, all the aid that goes towards food, medicine, etc. should just be road building. real talk. it would solve so many problems.
edit: I got 99 problems, but dat #toppageswag ain't one

Faster/less treacherous transport makes a WORLD of difference when doing things over distance.

He also kinda lives in one right now, so it's pretty much first hand experience.

I read a reddit AMA from some dude who spent like, a year and a half (I think?) traveling across Africa, and I remember he said that there were a lot of accidents and deaths just from people dying driving on the road at night because the roads are so bad.
Can only imagine that every once in a while, a vehicle transferring supplies such as food/water gets into a crash on the roads as well...

I suppose that makes sense, I always thought there was too much "quick fixes" going on with aid. I mean that it sometimes feels like there's not enough that aim for the long term and I guess roads would be a key part.

infrastructure is the most realistic and efficient way to long term improvement, but it's also the least effective short-term which makes it difficult to secure funding + guarantee longterm support, especially in regions that are more turbulent

Quick fixes are easier to get approval of/support in general. People see the effects of a quick fix and they're like "oh yeah, that was a good idea, it's working". Long term plans have far less observable gain in the short term, so they are harder to garner support for.

For some context:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maryland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesotho
Maryland and Lesotho have approximately the same area. however, the roads in Maryland are much better and there are far more of them. I don't know how long it would take to travel across Maryland but I know it should not be an all day affair.
the roads in Lesotho is basically an epsilon. to get from the northern most town (mokhotlong) to the maseru (the capital - at the western and center most point of the epsilon) takes all day via public transportation. with a private car it's quicker but still a hassle and slow.
because of the inaccessibility of many places, they are unable to leave or get to said place thus stopping the flow of aid and most importantly, education. my pcv friend (a girl) recently explained masturbation to her 50 year old male neighbor. he literally had no idea it was a thing. poor bro has had blue balls for sooooooo long. he has never left the village because it's damn near impossible to with the awful roads.
just imagine how much you would know if you lived in the same neighborhood your whole life.
no roads? good luck getting electricity, indoor plumbing, schools, food or supplies.

I do want to briefly apologize if I said anything incorrect yesterday. That just happens to be one of those subjects I get quite heated over, as I've seen what that sort of mindset does to people who identify as LGBT or asexual, including close family members and friends. It's been quite a long time since my biological psychology course, so I probably was working off half remembered facts and misinformation. You know me, I'll be the first to admit I fucked up. Though, it doesn't change my stance (not that I want to start that discussion again).
As for Pokemon, I think it's natural that with the release of a new gen and a lot of people here historically playing it that we'd have a lot of discussion on the game. It's a game that's easy to talk about even upon release (unlike story driven games or the like), and one that you can extensively discuss in a polite environment without the need for spoilers. It'll likely die down as people finish their runs and teams.
On topic, I think I'd like to do what you do someday Jon. I think volunteering is important, but I just don't feel like I have the mindset and attitude for it :\ It takes a big person to give their time and energy to help those less fortunate, you're a pretty cool dude for doing so.

sorry for the double post, but when my posts get long my phone can't handle it and I have to wait forever for my words to catch up.
as volf and soniv said it's all about long vs short. so many people would suffer if we just said sorry - we're building roads this year. you'll get your ARVs next year. it sucks but most of the aid are band aids. even me. although I'm a teacher, the education system is so terrible here. I've 11th graders that can't do -1 + 3.
the whole system is based on the Cambridge system so the kids have to learn everything in English and take all tests in english. could you Americans imagine having to learn all of your curriculum in Spanish/French/second language?
critical thinking, basic arithmetic, and English skills are all subpar here - and yet they are the foundation of education.

tl dr requizen thinks im an idiot because i hold the view that 10 year olds have (that genders are different in a number of ways, figure this by observation, with some possible bias towards how some kids of raised based on gender) because he holds the view that a 4 year olds have (different plumbing.)

people who are part of the LGBT community with some agender people and gender issues or w/e doesn't mean that gender doesn't exist and the majority are fairly happy identifying with it. (to some extent, not hurrdurr get back in the kitchen)

its not even like, one year, usually these long term projects need 10+ years to see tangible payoffs ,and thats simply unacceptable for a lot of places
hell
its unacceptable in the USA LOL and that's why nothing ever gets done. in this regard, an authoritarian government that has the ability to just decree a plan and stick to it for a long period is far superior

I feel like these discussions would go a lot better if you didn't have the compulsive need to have the last snarky word about everything.

also even though not everyone might fit into man or woman as gender it is such a small amount that you should ignore it anyway when it comes to categorizing which means your argument is doubly non relevant/strawman It's not sematics and it's narrow-minded to label it as such. These are important differences and acknowledging them is essential. If you want to use categories, fine, consider your point valid. But your casual example of men/women is flawed and that's my problem. Arguing that small percentages don't matter especially in this case devalues the people and perspectives that make up those percentages. I'm sorry if you wanted to make one point and we looked at a different one, but this is the one that matters to me. Just want to say that I think this is the best post in this whole genderapocalypse.

why? It doesn't devalue people to say small %'s don't matter. It values them the same as everyone else. The sum of the small parts is the whole. In any case I was talking about don't matter in a strictly business sense and never a human rights sense.
